Nextel Cup Series sounded horrible as well after 30 years of Winston, I would get rid of the Cup and just call it the Sprint Series. Whatever it is we'll get used to it :-). I don't think Sprint for the Nextel Cup would work though because it sounds like they are going to drop the Nextel name all together.

They should call it the Nascar Cup. Make it "Sprint Presents Nascar Cup" or something like that.

NASCAR:
I have been a fans since 1983. Loved Harry Gant, pull for Jeff Burton and Ryan Newman now.
Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin are world-class driver that could drive anything.

That being said...

IndyCar:
Better racing, better drivers, better tires, more tradition, faster cars, etc...

I am of the opinion that we kinda need ONE series (whether it's NASCAR or IRL) to be consider the top series that we we can have (like the past decade) people say NFL, MLB, NBA and NASCAR.

I love the Indy 500 and live in Indy - BUT love the SERIES of NASCAR (vs. the IndyCar Series). Now what's happening. You have to admit, if anyone watches the 3-wide, 220 mph, inches apart for 2 hours vs. the 4 or 5 hours snooze-fests that NASCAR has gave us the past few weeks, IndyCar is "better".

Your thoughts?

Sprint Cup Series? That sounds lame. I hope they don't go with that.

x90mattman
06-13-2005, 09:04 PM
According to tv ratings there is only one racing series in the US and thats Nascar (second only the the NFL for any sport). I think the only reason that the IRL is getting any more press than normal is because of Danica. (which is cool, because more interest in any racing series helps them all).

What exactly do you mean by IndyCar tires are better? Goodyear takes a tire that will wear out on purpose. Look at Talledega last year or the year prior, Jimmie Johnson never changed his left side tires for 500 miles and they held up. If they wanted, they could take tires that would last the whole race, but whats the point in that? I'm sure you still have guys that would find a way to abuse them (such as running over the corduroy at Pocano)

That pick is great. Just find it funny that DEI won't spend money on research and now everybody has caught or passed them in terms of car engineering.

I think the best thing for Jr to do is switch organizations. He has way too much power at DEI. The crew cheif should be able to overrule the driver, and Hmeil should make the call on 2 or 4 tires. Look at Kevin Harvick yesterday, Berrier asked him a question and Kevin said "I'm just the driver, you make the call."

I think it would be best for Jr. to leave DEI and see how another organization runs. He has been with DEI his whole career and think it's gottten to him. Like you said he does have too much power and either take it away and make him drive or throw him out and make him run the business.

x90mattman

I personally don't want him to switch organizations, I would bet that DEI is throwing more money into there stuff than any team right now to try and stop being embaraced every week. I do think he needs to grow up though and the coversation above is a perfect example, you do your job and let the crew do theres. If you think you can do a better job than your crew chief, please see Rusty Wallace.

Joe Gibbs Racing has hired two-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Terry Labonte to pilot the #11 Fed-Ex Chevrolet during the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA. He replaces Jason Leffler, the #11 team's regular driver, for this one event. "Jason understands that our support of him continues, as he'll race this weekend at Michigan and return to the #11 at Daytona," said J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing.

I'm not giving Leffler much luck to make it to the end of the season in the car.

Bronko

Yeah, Leffler really doesn't have a shot.

R. Giles

Yeah, Leffler really doesn't have a shot.

He stops being decent in the Busch series. He has said that they are bringing cars to the track that haven't been fully repaired. If he stops wrecking Gibbs might keep him longer.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not pleased with the state of his team, which fell to 16th in the standings after last week’s 33rd-place finish at Pocono. However, he is happy with the communication between his #8 Budweiser team and the #15 NAPA team of Michael Waltrip since Steve Hmiel was named his crew chief last month.

Find it funny that Jr. is now happy with sharing information. I have a feeling that Hmiel slapped Jr. a couple times to get him to share information. I don't think it was Rondeu's decision to not share information but Jr's. because he wanted to be better then Michael.

Bronko

I am not a huge fan of this happy hour on friday and qualifying on saturday stuff. What exactly is impounding the car suppose to do other than f up the racing, since they cant change the cars to conditions of the day. This rule is up there with the one set of tires and one engine every two races in F1.

R. Giles
06-17-2005, 10:49 PM
They think it will save the teams money because then they aren't spending tons of money on just qualifying equipment. Like different oil, different engines and what not.

avsfan21
06-17-2005, 10:51 PM
I find this all these money saving rules in all racing just stupid. The teams are going to spend the money anyway. If it isnt for engines, oil, tires, whatever the rule is this week. It will be on something else, like more research and development. The teams are going to keep spending more and more money. There really isnt a way to stop it, unless you just start giving teams their cars to race like IROC.

R. Giles
06-17-2005, 10:55 PM
That's what my mom said today, just make all the cars the same. Then it is based on driving talent. Most of the teams now that can have a bunch of other programs going on that they spend the extra money on. Like Hendrick, Roush, and Everham have Arca teams plus Busch. So they spend alot of money to improve the cup by doing this.

If you made all the cars the same, then there would be the big one every race! :) Most of the drivers all do have similiar talents. They are the best of the best, anywhere!! ;)

Very true. Only that the other than the nose and the headlight decals they are all pretty much the same. Even if you made them the same the setups are gonna be different. Not that Im in favor of an IROC type deal. Just my .02

I would hate it also. I dont really like what Nascar is doing right now with common templates basically and common gear ratios. This is why I like F1 and Le Mans, the cars have strict rules to follow to build the cars, but they still look different.

ramos
06-18-2005, 02:06 PM
Yeah im not into the f1 and lemans stuff. The problem with nascar is that they give into the whiners too much. Whenever a certain make wins a couple races in a row or they finish consistantly at the top,the other makes whine and cry. That leads to rule changes to make the cars even more the same. I remember about 2 years ago when the chevy and dodges kept getting front end kickouts week after week. I still watch everyweek I just hope it doesnt end up like iroc

I said that to my dad before the race started, we were going to watch the F1 race until that big deal happened, so I turned it over to the nascar race. I said wouldnt it be great if the Goodyear drivers pull into the pits due to safety since Goodyear is always blowing tires.

NASCAR: Shane Hmiel's suspension to last until at least 2007

By JIM UTTER

ThatsRacin.com Writer

Former Busch Series driver Shane Hmiel, suspended indefinitely earlier this month for a second violation of NASCAR's substance abuse policy, will not allowed to apply for reinstatement until at least 2007, NASCAR officials said.

Hmiel was suspended indefinitely June 3 after failing a substance-abuse test. He was suspended in September 2003 after failing a substance-abuse test but completed a prescribed rehabilitation program and was reinstated for NASCAR competition in February 2004.

According to a statement released Wednesday, NASCAR will lay out a plan for Hmiel's possible reinstatement in 2007, which will include a rehabilitation program, medical and psychological reviews, as well as frequent testing.

NASCAR's substance abuse policy, first adapted in 1988, provides for testing based on reasonable suspicion.

avs - I am there with you - trying to save some drivers for the end

I am running

Gordo
Said
R. Gordo
Fellows

I am actually taking R. Gordon over M. Martin - hope it pays off. I got the nice qual bonus from Mark - but want to save the start for later in the year as he makes a run for the cup

That is one reason I dont really care for the yahoo fantasy racing. I hate the you can only use 1 driver for the most of 9 races rule. I want my driver on my team every race. At least with the epsn fantasy racing they give you 100 points to spend on 5 drivers and you have to buy the drivers you can within 100 points. I keep Jeff all season long, even the bad ones, like 2000. Then change the other 4 around him.

I was thinking the same thing. Usually I go with "the other guy" when it comes to weeks where everyone seems to pick the same guy. This week it was a given that a ton of people would take Gordon. (The way he's raced road courses and dominated Infineon, how could you blame anyone for taking him). But it's usually those weeks where I gamble a little and take another guy, thinking that something like this past weekend would happen.

Of course once I can use him anymore he will start winning races.

I personally like Wally in the booth over any of the other Nascar commentators. DW would be good, but he tries to hard to come up with all those stupid sayings, then uses them over and over, even after they are old. Benny was good, but I think he is getting too old. He now has trouble figuring out which driver is in which car. He makes many mistakes like this during a race.

Thats what I find funny about that shot both Toyotas in the shot with ads. The IRL race doesn't start until 3 so after the replay of the F1 race.

The IRL race is on at 1 est, not 3 so it will be on during the F1 replay.

Man, I just love RCR  What other company could have 3 cars in the top 10 all day and end up with 2 wrecking each other and the 3rd somehow loosing a lap after restarting up front in the last restart. At least my local team finished well with Mike Wallace.

That's the way of the future now. This way, the tracks can sell out all of their races, not just the Nascar dates. But as for the ARCA series, those are much better races than the Busch or IRL dates. Craftsmen Truck series is still second best behind Nascar Cup races though.
As for tickets, you are obviously pretty close to the track, so if you wanted, you can go up on Saturday or Sunday morning to scalp tickets........this close to the race, you can usually get a decent deal without getting ripped off.

I'm not necessarily a McMurray hater, but he hasn't done anything to impress me. His only win came in Sterling Marlin's car with Marlin's team 3 years and 94 races ago.

Any boardies going to attend qualifying tomorrow in Joliet? Went last year and had a great time so I'll be there all day tomorrow. To me it's just as cool as going to the actual races, you see practices and qualifying all day, it's cheap ($15, those track-packs are expensive),and it's not crowded (you can sit wherever you wish). I'd rather stay home on Sunday and watch the race in HD. ;)

You guys have got to see Atlanta Motor Speedway. The place is almost destoried. The county that myself and R. Giles lives in along with the speedway was hit hard with weather last night. The Speedway and the airport next door had the most damage that I have seen so far. The neighborhood that is infront of my has a lot of homes missing roofs. My house was pretty lucky that we only lost two shutters on the front of the house. Although we didnt have power for about 9 hours last night. Power went went out about 9:30ish at night and didnt come back up until 6ish in the morning. The next neighbors lost a tree in their front yard, snapped in half by the wind. On my way to work today the roads were just covered with leaves and pine needles with parts of trees laying on the side of the road. Pretty crazy stuff.

Yeah Avs. you were in the middle of the storm. My house just got alot of rain plus thunder and lightning. No power outage and most of the bad stuff stayed to the north of my house. About 9 miles to the west was hit so was 9 miles to north with damage. Luckily I got out of work before the bad stuff hit up there.

avsfan21

Man the lightning was intense. I was like constant flashing. It almost looked like the grandstands on the pace laps of a start of a night race in Cup. It was a pretty good show until the what appeared to be tornado seemed to come near our house.

Rumble Strips gone? hearing that Pocono Raceway has removed the rumble strips in the corners, hoping that will allow the tire problem that happened in June will not occur again. No word if the patch in the tunnel turn was fixed.

Who knows if this will fix the goodyear tire problem.

Did anyone see the Big Break All-star challenge on the Golf Channel Tuesday night. It had Jamie McMurray, Dale Jarrett, Michael Waltrip, Rusty Wallace and Elliott Sadler. It was a pretty funny show with just six guys going for 5,000 dollars to the charity of their choice. The first challenge was to hit balls through glass. Rusty Wallace gets up there and says "I'm going for the 88." Then Michael Waltrip goes "You would probably do better if a 12 was up there." Took them a minute to calm down from laughing.

Greg Biffle's comments about the race:

"I think Kevin Harvick is a chicken. I think he's a punk and I wish he was sitting right here beside me, if you want to know how I really feel, I'd get points taken away."

Harvick's rebuttal:

"Sounds to me like he's showing a lot of prima donna attitude and he needs to go sit in his motorhome with his girlfriend because he's got a lot more to lose than I do, if he wants to step outside and take care of it, we can, but I didn't know there was an issue. As far as I'm concerned he can sit out there and whine all he wants."

Apparently Greg doesn't understand the strategy that you do everything you can to win and not letting good cars get their laps back helps you do that. Greg needs to let this 10 year feud with Harvick drop before Harvick has to choke him again :p

The coolest thing happened at dinner tonight.

I went to Golden Corral with some friends and as we were getting ready to leave this older gentleman sitting a few tables away stops us and says "Are you leaving" and we say yes and he says hold on a minute my wife wants to give you something. Looking around to see if he was maybe talking to one of my friends I say OK - and his wife walks up and takes off one of those "Livestrong" style bands - this one is black though - and says "this is One of the "Continue the Legend" bands from the Earnhard foundation - and I noticed your Dale Jr shirt and thought you might want it."
They apparently went to the Busch race today and got it there.

Very cool - and they didn't even know it was my birthday.

Missed the Busch race due to work but sounds like the end was exciting. From the comments it looks like Bifle is mad because Harvick didn't help him. Man Bifle still needs to learn that you race to get the lap back not be handed to you, or become the first car a lap down and get it back that way with a caution.

Well the incident happened during green flag pit stops. Everyone but Reed Sorenson had pitted, meaning only one car on the lead lap. As the leaders began to catch up and get their laps back, Harvick had caught Sorenson but seemed like he just rode behind him as the first lap down car. Biffle was behind Harvick, so if a caution had come out Harvick would be back on the lead lap anyway. Whereas if Kevin passed him for his lap, Biffle would be the lucky dog.

I thought it was a pretty sound move. Biffle had a good car, so why not try to keep him a lap down to better improve your own chance of winning?

Nothing wrong with what Harvick did. Biffle just whining over something that all driver's do.

Greg needs to let this 10 year feud with Harvick drop before Harvick has to choke him again :p

I never knew anything about a feud. Care to elaborate?

and his wife walks up and takes off one of those "Livestrong" style bands - this one is black though - and says "this is One of the "Continue the Legend" bands from the Earnhard foundation - and I noticed your Dale Jr shirt and thought you might want it."
They apparently went to the Busch race today and got it there.

Very cool - and they didn't even know it was my birthday.

yeh, you can get them at the DaleEarnhardt Foundation website as well for $3 for a three-pack plus shipping. They just came out last week. Very cool gesture though, thats why Nascar fans are better than any other. :)

Yeah Goodyear needs to get better, Edwards blistered tires during practice and then one blows. Jeff Burton just had a left rear flat but don't know if it blew or ran over something.

I think he bumped with the 42 car, maybe knocked off a valve stem!

Yeah hit on Wednesday night, when Tropical Storm Cindy moved through the Atlanta area. Costing about 25 to 40 million to repair all the damage done.

Hey gang, back from my soggy vacation to Daytona last week...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v692/x90mattman/100_0741.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v692/x90mattman/100_0740.jpg

Had a blast though, had a rough start with the tire blowing on my parents car dolly that they were pulling behind the RV to pick us up. So, me and my gf got to know the staff at the Orlando Sanford airport for 6 hours last wed before they were able to get it repaired then get to us to head on to Daytona. Was able to get Casey Mears, Boris Said and Travis Kvapil's autographs in person and grabbed a pair of Kevin Harvick auto'd hero cards from the chevy test drive (corvettes rock!).

Had a rough week in the fantasy league as everybody else seems to be having as well. Hopefully this week will be better.

On a side note, I wish there was a way to get a feed of the race on tv without any anouncers whatsoever. I would love a PPV channel that had the same coverage and graphics (sans advertising) but nothing but the engines, kinda like the Indemand for the incars. I couldn't stand BP last year and this year adding in bill weber and i'm ready to watch the race on Mute. The main thing I hate is that they sound like there commentating it for the radio, at the beggining of the race "biffle to the oustide passing whoever it was" Well, last time I checked, I'm WATCHING the race, not listening to it so I can see what your talking about. And BP only seems to repeat what the other guys say.

And since i'm talking about broadcasting, if any of you ever go to the race and have scanners, tune into the MRN frequency, your listening to the live feed so when they cut for the radio stations to go to commercial, you still get to here the crew talk to each other and its pretty entertaining listening to all of them harrass each other and have a good time.

Yeah I have been cut off of the racing world out here. God I having no speed channel just kills your racing knowledge. I found out who won the F1 race earlier today when it was on the bottom line on espn2, but had no idea where anyone else finished, not even Kimi. Thank god for the internet.

Missed the cup race today doing the family thing. I guess I should be happy about that actually. I would have been pissed. Jeff Gordon couldnt even buy a finish at this point. If he didnt have bad luck this year he wouldnt have any at all.

On a side note on the way up to Maryland from Georgia, we stopped off at Charlotte and went to the Hendrick shop. Man it has changed since the last time I have been there. The have some nice cars in there little museum. I was pretty excited about that part of the trip.

Yeah Gordon getting taken out by Mike Bliss sealed Gordon's fate. Fate I mean Wrigley Field cursed him for his insult of the field or at least that's what ESPN thinks.
