No way man they are all the same. They hold nothing compared to Le Mans prototypes.

The Daytona prototypes are a joke compared to an Audi prototype. Just be fun to watch for the driving pair ups.

Toyota to race Cup, Busch beginning in '07

Official Release
January 23, 2006
07:13 PM EST (00:13 GMT)

NASCAR and Toyota announced Monday the manufacturer's plans to expand its racing program by competing in the Nextel Cup and Busch series starting in 2007, fielding the Camry model.
The expansion will follow three years of Toyota competing in the Craftsman Truck Series, and will result in all three of NASCAR's national series having four manufacturers competing, as Toyota will join Chevrolet, Dodge and Ford.
NASCAR welcomes Toyota to the greatest auto racing in the world," said NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France, who made the announcement at NASCAR's Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C.
"Toyota's entry into the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and the NASCAR Busch Series is good for drivers, teams and the fans. This move provides for even more intense competition on the track between drivers and manufacturers, which will provide more excitement and fan interest. Toyota's entry also provides more options for drivers and teams, which will increase the competition between manufacturers."
"It's a great pleasure to announce Toyota's entry into the NASCAR Nextel Cup and NASCAR Busch Series with the Toyota Camry," said Dave Illingworth, senior vice president and chief planning and administrative officer for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.
Next year, 2007, will be a special year for Toyota in more ways than one. Toyota will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in the United States, and we will be joining the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, America's premier racing series.
"Toyota has been an important part of the U.S. motorsports community for almost 25 years. We've competed and won in different series and on tracks across America. Toyota drivers and teams have won championships in a variety of different series. But, if you want to compete against the best in America, that means NASCAR.
"We look forward to February of 2007 when the green flag waves to start the Daytona 500 and the starting lineup features the Toyota Camry."
Illingworth, who joined France in making the announcement, said more information -- regarding possible sponsor and driver lineups -- will be released Tuesday night, during a media gathering at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord.
This year, Toyota is celebrating its 24th year of participation in American professional auto racing. Toyota drivers and teams have won championships in IMSA, CART, IRL and off-road racing. They have won such historic events as the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, the Baja 1000 and the Indianapolis 500.
Toyota moved into NASCAR in 2000, fielding the Celica model in the Goody's Dash Series. The following season, gave Toyota its first NASCAR victory, at Kentucky Speedway. In 2003, Huffman gave Toyota its first NASCAR championship by capturing the Goody's Dash title.
In 2004, Toyota entered the Truck Series with the Tundra -- in the process becoming the first new manufacturer in one of NASCAR's top series in more than 50 years. In two seasons of Truck competition, Tundra drivers have recorded 13 victories and 18 poles.

Ford contingent skeptical of Toyota's Cup chances

CONCORD, N.C. -- The Daytona 500 is still a month away, but most of the talk on the first day of the 2006 Nextel Cup Media Tour centered around the 2007 season.

NASCAR and Toyota officially announced their partnership in the 2007 Cup Series, giving the circuit four manufacturers for the first time in four seasons.

Greg Biffle to Toyota: Good luck, you're going to need it.

It remains to be seen what kind of impact Toyota can make in the series. When Dodge re-entered the series in 2001, it didn't make much of an immediate impact. Sterling Marlin was the lone driver to finish in the top 14 in points.

Greg Biffle says Toyota should expect a similar wait for results.

"They don't stand a chance," Biffle said. "The Toyota teams are going to be tough guys, but I am telling you what, this sport is so hard, so tough, there isn't anyone that can come in and be competitive right off."

Toytota has competed in the Craftsman Truck Series since 2003, and its Tundra came within 73 points of winning the title in 2005. After failing to record a victory in the season's first 11 races, Toyotas won nine of the final 14 events.

CAMRY TO CUP

NASCAR on Monday announced Toyota's plans to expand its racing program to the Cup and Busch series starting in 2007.

But Toyota said Monday that its Nextel Cup teams won't follow the pattern that made it so successful in the Craftsman Truck Series. Toyota always has heavily supported the teams financially and provided the same engineering help, and that will change in 2007.

Unlike Dodge in 2001, Toyota will not enter the sport by providing factory-sponsored teams. Its teams will be expected to find outside funding from existing or new sponsors.

Biffle said that the learning curve for teams is much steeper than in 2001, especially with some top teams simply struggling to win at the Nextel Cup level.

"It's going to take experience and it's going to take time," Biffle said. "How long is it going to take? How long will it take [Richard] Childress to win races on a regular basis?

"So you're starting about someone brand new, how long will it be before they are winning races constantly? This is a tough business and it is going to be difficult."

Biffle's teammate, Carl Edwards, said that Ford's work with the Fusion will help offset some of Toyota's advantages.

"This Fusion, they have put a lot of work into it and no one will let something happen that we don't want to happen without someone voicing our opinion," Edwards said. "Speculation is a pretty big thing."

Team owner Robert Yates, who has fielded Fords for nearly 20 years in the Nextel Cup Series, agreed that NASCAR's strict templates will make it tough for Toyota to dominate.

"I know our whole point is to race on Sunday and sell on Monday, so that's the part that I want to make sure we kick their butt," Yates said. "I'm sure they want to kick ours, but I think NASCAR handles the competition side of it so we can be competitive."__________________

Former NASCAR champion Kenseth to stay with Roush

January 27, 2006

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Former NASCAR champion Matt Kenseth has signed a multiyear contract extension with Roush Racing.

Kenseth, who won the final Winston Cup title in 2003, has been part of Jack Roush's organization since 1999 and has collected 10 Cup wins, three poles, 51 top five finishes and 99 top 10 finishes.

``We are very pleased that Matt extended his contract with Roush Racing,'' Roush said. ``Matt is one of the most talented drivers in the garage and he'll always hold a special place in our organization, having helped to bring us our first Cup championship in 2003.''

Roush will also field Cup cars in 2006 for Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Mark Martin and team newcomer Jamie McMurray, who replaced 2004 champion Kurt Busch. Busch left Roush to drive this year for Penske Racing South, replacing retired Rusty Wallace.

Schrader gains pole for Budweiser Shootout

February 9, 2006
By Bruce Martin SportsTicker Contributing Editor

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (Ticker) - Ken Schrader proved it's "Nifty to be Fifty" as the aging NASCAR Nextel Cup veteran drew the pole for Saturday night's Budweiser Shootout.

The annual drawing among the pole winners from last season was held Thursday night at the Daytona 500 Club at Daytona International Speedway.

The 50-year-old driver from St. Louis, Missouri is celebrating his 21st season in Cup racing and first for the Wood Brothers team.

"I'm excited to be racing for the Wood Brothers," Schrader said after drawing the top starting spot. "(Heck), I'm very excited about just having a job. Heck, this hasn't been a bad week for us."

Schrader was the next-to-last of the 21 drivers to draw for position, and with only two hidden bottle caps left on the board, he was going to draw either the pole or 12th position. After asking the audience for help on which cap to turn over, the loudest ovation was for the one he selected.

Schrader's Ford Fusion will start alongside Jimmie Johnson's Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the front row. Schrader never has won the Budweiser Shootout or its predecessor, the Busch Clash.

Defending Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart will start third in a Chevrolet, followed by Joe Nemechek's Chevy. Kasey Kahne's Dodge starts fifth.

Fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of three drivers left to draw with the pole still available but grabbed the 19th spot in the 21-car field.

When asked what he liked about the Bud Shootout, Earnhardt's response was typical.

"Because it's a short race," he said.

Earnhardt won this race in 2003.

Other notable racers include three-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Jarrett, who starts ninth in a Ford, and three-time 500 winner and four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon, who is 10th.

Michael Waltrip's Dodge starts last.

Strange, wild day at Daytona

February 13, 2006

AP - Feb 12, 8:53 pm EST
More Photos

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Disqualifications and complaints about safety issues overshadowed the racing on the first real day of action of the new NASCAR season.

Jeff Burton gave Richard Childress Racing the Daytona 500 pole and some added hope for a turnaround of fortunes this year, while rookie Denny Hamlin surprised the field in the Budweiser Shootout exhibition race Sunday.

But the long day -- made longer by the Shootout being postponed from Saturday night by rain -- ended with Nextel Cup stars Jimmie Johnson and Terry Labonte having their qualifying laps set aside for rules infractions and Hamlin's veteran teammate Tony Stewart saying the practice of ``bump drafting'' at Daytona International Speedway is going to get someone hurt or killed.

Among the 58 drivers who made qualifying attempts Sunday on the 2.5-mile track, only Burton and runner-up Jeff Gordon, the three-time and defending Daytona 500 champion, locked in starting positions for next Sunday's race.

The rest of the drivers simply earned starting spots in one of two 150-mile qualifying races Thursday.

Johnson, who had the fifth-fastest lap in time trials, and two-time Cup champion Labonte, who was 28th, will both have to start from the rear in the first of those events.

NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter left open the possibility that their cars could be confiscated by the governing body. Additional penalties also could follow. Hunter said Johnson's Chevrolet did not meet template specifications and Labonte's Chevy had unapproved modifications to the carburetor.

Even as NASCAR inspectors were checking out the cars from qualifying, baby-faced 25-year-old Hamlin was outdueling his elders in the 70-lap Shootout, a race for the previous year's pole winners and former winners of the made-for-TV event.

The veterans bumped and banged on his rear bumper, trying to shove the newcomer, with only seven Cup races at the end of last season under his belt, out of the way. Nothing shook the youngster, though.

``The back bumper is literally ripped off the race car just from getting hit so hard,'' said Hamlin, the youngest and new member of Joe Gibbs Racing.

Teams are required to use carburetor restrictor-plates at Daytona, NASCAR's fastest track, to sap the horsepower and reduce the speeds around the 2 1/2 -mile track. The result is a long pack of cars unable to separate from one another, forcing drivers to bump draft in an attempt to shove each other out of the way and make a pass.

It's dangerous and Stewart, the reigning Cup champion and Hamlin's teammate, angrily predicted it will lead to disaster at the track where Dale Earnhardt was killed five years ago in an accident.

``They're talking about the tribute to Dale Earnhardt, well, five years from now, we're going to have to do another tribute to another driver because we're probably going to kill somebody (next week),'' Stewart barked. ``It could be me, it could be Dale Jr., it could be anybody out there.''

Not everyone agreed.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished second to Hamlin, was less critical of the conditions, chalking up much of the aggression to the nothing-to-lose mentality of the non-points Shootout. With the Daytona 500 title on the line next Sunday, Junior believes the event will be less treacherous.

``Tony's got a point, it was a dangerous in a couple of spots,'' he said. ``It's just hard racing, but it's only going to happen in the Shootout. In the 500, it will not be like that. Everybody will be a lot more calm.''

Hamlin sided with Earnhardt in the safety debate.

``There was some major hitting going on out there, but I wasn't complaining because when I was getting it, I was out front,'' said Hamlin, who led 16 of the 70 laps. ``It's the nature of the race. I don't think you'll see that in the 500 because guys won't want to tear up their cars like that.''

Hamlin appeared headed toward an easy win when Stewart used a wide pass to take the lead away from him with four laps to go. Seconds later, though, a caution flag came out for debris on the track, setting up a two-lap shootout to the finish.

Stewart restarted on the bottom of the track, with Hamlin right next to him. Hamlin quickly moved out front, then held off challenges from Stewart and Earnhardt. Stewart finished third, followed by Scott Riggs and defending race winner Johnson.

Burton, who hadn't won a pole in more than five years, wasn't in the Shootout. But he and team owner Richard Childress were ecstatic after taking the top spot for NASCAR's biggest event.

``It's big,'' Burton said after getting an emotional bearhug from his boss. ``Hopefully, it's another sign that this team is getting ready to turn things around.''

Childress had one of the strongest teams in the sport until longtime driver and friend Earnhardt was killed in a crash during the 2001 Daytona 500. Kevin Harvick had a good season for RCR after replacing Earnhardt the following week at Rockingham, but the team has struggled in the years since.

Childress was determined to turn things around, making numerous personnel changes and radically improving the team's equipment since the end of last season. This was the first big test.

``Yeah, it's emotional,'' Childress said. ``We've struggled for the last few years. We've got to put it all together and we've got to start winning.''

It was the third career pole for Burton and first since the fall 2000 race in Richmond, when he was driving for Roush Racing.

His fast lap of 189.151 mph on a windy, chilly day at Daytona International Speedway was the fastest qualifying run at Daytona since Dale Jarrett's 191.091 in February 2000.

Knaus ejected from Daytona after disqualification

By MARK LONG, AP Sports Writer

February 13, 2006

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Jimmie Johnson's crew chief was thrown out of the Daytona 500 on Monday for illegal modifications made to Johnson's car during pole qualifying.

Chad Knaus was accused of raising the rear window on the No. 48 Chevrolet to alter aerodynamics during Johnson's run Sunday. The infraction was discovered in a post-qualifying inspection when the car failed to fit NASCAR templates.

NASCAR said Knaus cannot appeal the ejection.

NASCAR also said the Hendrick Motorsports team could be subject to additional penalties, which would be announced after Sunday's Daytona 500.

Team owner Rick Hendrick said lead engineer Darian Grubb will replace Knaus as crew chief for Sunday's ``Great American Race.''

``It's obviously disappointing to miss the biggest race of the year, but I'm confident in Darian and the rest of my teammates,'' Knaus said in a statement.

Johnson finished fifth in pole qualifying, but he will have to start from the rear of the field during Thursday's 150-mile races that sets the rest of the Daytona 500 lineup.

``We understand NASCAR's position,'' Hendrick said in a statement. ``Our expectations for the team remain high. It's a deep, championship-caliber group and they'll step up this weekend.''

Two-time NASCAR champion Terry Labonte also had his qualifying run disallowed Sunday, but the series said any penalties against that team would not be announced until next week.

NASCAR acted quickly against the 34-year-old Knaus, possibly because he has been penalized repeatedly for rules infractions.

Knaus was suspended two races and fined $35,000 last year because Johnson's race-winning car failed to meet the minimum height requirement during post-race inspection at Las Vegas. The team also was docked 25 championship points.

Knaus successfully appealed the suspension, getting it reduced to 90 days of probation, but the fine and points penalty were upheld.

He also was fined more than $30,000 over the 2002 and 2003 seasons for various violations, including one for cursing on live television.

The latest suspension might be applauded in some NASCAR garages. Several teams complained publicly last year that Knaus was receiving special treatment because his two-race suspension was overturned and he avoided trouble when NASCAR discovered modified shock absorbers on the No. 48 following a race at Dover International Speedway.

``There's a little bit of a double standard,'' driver Kevin Harvick, whose crew chief was suspended twice last season for a total of six races, said last week. ``There's probably a reason why Chad Knaus maybe has been brown-nosing too much. I don't know. Maybe we need to brown-nose a little more.''

Knaus is widely considered the best crew chief in the garage -- a title that can be both satisfying and stigmatizing.

He's driven, demanding, ultra-confident and creative. A Ray Evernham protege, Knaus learned much of what he knows from working under Evernham as an original member of the ``Rainbow Warriors,'' the crew that pushed Jeff Gordon to three of his NASCAR championships.

Evernham's imprint can be found in much of what Knaus does -- to the point where he's often chided and referred to as ``Little Ray'' around the garage.

Evernham also was cited numerous times as a crew chief for violations, including the biggest fine in NASCAR history -- a $60,000 penalty in 1995 for using an unapproved suspension part on Gordon's car.

AP Motorsports Writer Jenna Fryer contributed to this report.

I heard what you heard. Today's interview I heard Jr called it a "Neccessary Evil". He went on to say however that we're not going to see what happened today at the 500. He said this is what happens in a shoot out atmosphere, but that things will calm down for the 500.

Nice, was listening to the race via the track pass(well when I was nottaking calls). So, for those that were watching. How did Bobby look. I know he was leading like the first dozen. Dropped back. But finished a nice strong 4th. So a second part to my question. Does it look promising for Labonte and his Cholestorol Reducing machine for this season!!!!

I was not impressed with the TNT coverage. I wanted to see Jeff win the race not watch who came in 12th spot. I dont really care if it was for the transfer spot. They did it in the first race also, following two cars for the trasfer spot, which ended up being the wrong two cars and neither of them got into the race. You didnt even get to see the leader take the checkered flag in either of the 150s. Dumb on TNTs part.

Confident Gordon skips final Daytona practice

February 18, 2006

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Wearing jeans, a designer shirt and fancy sunglasses, Jeff Gordon watched the final practice for the Daytona 500 from atop his hauler Saturday.

Looking confident and composed, the only thing Gordon and his team had left to do was check out the competition.

``We've spent the last three months getting ready for this race. If one more hour makes that much of a difference, then shame on us,'' said Steve Letarte, crew chief for the No. 24 Chevrolet.

Maybe Gordon and Letarte were playing mind games with other teams, giving the appearance of being ready and not wanting to show too much so close to the season-opening race.

``I am sure it affects people, but that was not our goal,'' Letarte said. ``I'm sure there's people that are bothered by it, but we've been preparing for three months. We attacked it like (Friday) was going to be our final practice and he had a good run. He came in and said he had a lot of speed and he knows best.''

Gordon, the defending Daytona 500 champion, won one of the 150-mile qualifying races Thursday and will start on the outside pole Sunday. He also showed good speed in the first five practice sessions.

``From here on out it's just race adjustments,'' Gordon said.

Ken Schrader had the fastest practice lap Saturday, just ahead of teammates Martin Truex Jr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Hermie Sadler was the only other driver who didn't run any practice laps on the high-banked oval. But unlike Gordon, he wasn't even at the track.

Sadler, the older brother of Elliott Sadler, took his youngest daughter to Disney World in nearby Orlando to celebrate making The Great American Race for the first time in his career. He also had another reason to skip town.

``We didn't want to take a chance of something happening during practice,'' Sadler said.<

Time will tell if it was a good move or not!!

That was some of the worst race coverage Ive ever seen. The picture was terrible, the announcers are always one step behind the action and gotta love all those commercials. They blamed the poor pictures on the weather. Well if memory serves me correct Fox and CBS broadcast football games in far worse weather than that. Harvick went a lap down and we didnt find out why until he got the lucky dog. Sorry for the rant,on to Cali.

i got to listen to the race on radio since i was at work. the radio is by far better then nbc because they tell you whats going on all the time, since you can't see whats going on. congrats to jimmy for the win but newman's comment at the end was damn funny saying johnson's car might still be illegal. stewart is an idiot for trying to kill kenseth when last week said they were going to kill somebody and he hoped he wasn't around.

It's official!!!

I may actully dispise Jimmie more then either of the Busch brothers!!!

The guy is nothing but a classless pompous arse!!!

I never laughed so hard in my life when people started to leave and boo before he even made it to victory lane!!!!!

Ryan Newman nailed it right on the head!! Don't think the 48 team will ever be trusted again by NASCAR or other drivers!!

At least the Cheater Knaus doesn't get credit as being a Daytona 500 Winning Crew Chief!!

Harvick went a lap down and we didnt find out why until he got the lucky dog.

That's why I always listen to Kev's in car radio. He had to change his carb, and then Nascar pulled a BS move by holding him a lap. And let's just say he had some colorful language to describe it ;).

I'll agree with everything but the weather statement. As far as the in-car goes, the higher the helicopter with the reciever is the better the picture. Also, the bigger the track, the higher the helicopter needs to be.

I think the camera's fogging up were out of they're control as well. Who knew the conditions were going to go that crappy, and if you've ever lived in a cold weather place with storm windows, every morning my windows fog up on the inside (like i suspect the camera's doing) until the temp levels off. It definattly sucks and I don't know why they didn't wipe the water droplets off the camera's (unless the droplets were on the inside like the foginess).

On a good note though, they're not back for 5 months!

Matt

That was some of the worst race coverage Ive ever seen. The picture was terrible, the announcers are always one step behind the action and gotta love all those commercials. They blamed the poor pictures on the weather. Well if memory serves me correct Fox and CBS broadcast football games in far worse weather than that. Harvick went a lap down and we didnt find out why until he got the lucky dog. Sorry for the rant,on to Cali.

I dont see what Tony did wrong. He really didnt do what he go back on his statement. His statement was about bump drafting, He didnt do that much that I could see. Now blantanly wrecking some, he said nothing about, so it is fair game.

I still cant believe that he was held for at least a lap for that crap. When they said that he would go to the end of the longest line, I was like what the hell. That is barely a penalty.

I did find what Jimmie said in Victory Lane funny. This win is for all the 48 haters. You know that is only going to make them mad.

Another thing is what is up with all the Confetti in Victory Lane. They went a little overboard with it I would say. It was every where. You couldnt even see the car after it was all finished falling. It was like a red, white, and blue out since that was all you could see.

Nope! He was on the lead lap in 10-20th place all day long, and even was in the top 10 near the end! Not sure why he finished so low! He was in 13th at the green/white/checker laps! Maybe he pitted before they restarted?

The water droplets where the thing that bothered me the most. Unless it was fogging up in the inside there is no excuse for that. I cant wait until I dont have to see or listen to these guys again. I dont know whats worse their coverage or everything that comes out of BP's mouth.

I still don't get the hatred for Jimmie. They call him a whiner and that his team are cheaters, etc, but what everyone seems to miss sight of what we don't know behind the scenes is EVERY team tries to tweak the car here & there. They all do what they can to try and get an advantage. Nascar officials (who used to be old crew chiefs all admit that fact). Hell, half the rules that are in effect are because of the things these guys used to do to get an advantage with their cars.

As far as last year when Knaus had the car modified lower or whatever.....did he break any rule then, No. Did the car get flagged on inspection, Yes. They got docked points, as per the penalty set by Nascar, and Nascar closed the loop hole that Knaus used to their advantage. So they took their lumps. It's not like they're doing these things and not getting penalized. If it's that big a deal, then Nascar should park the car. But that's not what the penalty is.
Could be worse though.....at least Johnson isn't deliberately hitting other drivers at 190mph and forcing them into the infield, like SOME drivers. Yeah let's lambaste the guy who tweaks his car here & there and not do anything to the guy who could actually cause someone bodily harm.

Let's not forget other teams who get caught with "illegal cars or adjustments." Last year Harvick's chief was gone for 4 races, I think Bill Elliott's car even got caught for something illegal last week during the Shootout too, wasn't it.?.? But we won't remember those, will we.?. All that everyone ever talks about is when it happens to the 48 team.

Knaus is an innovative crew chief trying to do all he can to help his team. Pushing the envelope. Sometimes he goes a little too far, and Nascar snags him, but the team takes the punishment that Nascar gives them.

Just because Johnson isn't a redneck doesn't make him any less of a great driver either. You got guys like Jr. calling guys "idiots" (let's try to be a little more well-spoken, Dale) and Tony Stewart with the "He started it, I finished it" run a guy off the road at 190 mph mentality. Yeah, that makes sense.?.

Last year Johnson was called a whiner for saying that bump drafting was a major reason for the cause of the wrecks he caused at Talladega. So he's a whiner.?.? Fast forward to 2006 Daytona, and Tony Stewart gets applauded for saying bump drafting needs to stop, and people actually start saying that he may take over the torch from Dale Sr as spokesman for the drivers.
Then who's the first person out there bumping cars or running them into the infield.?.? The "drivers new spokesman." :p Nice Tony. Real nice driving.

All Johnson has done since he came on the scene is be a top driver. I don't think he's been outside of the Top 5 in the 5 years he's been in Nascar.

I'm not blasting anyone who's made negative Johnson comments on here. I really like & respect all of you on here. But even one of my close friends hates Johnson (loves Stewart) and we get in this discussions too. So I don't want anyone to think I want to get into a heated arguement. Just some lively debating.....

Hendrick Motorsports: Cheat to win
Really.?. That's what you're going to use?
Isn't that argument getting a little old?? :p :D

Nascar inspected the car for 3 hours. Given the past infractions, and as recent as just last week....sure it's expected.
And you know what, I'm glad that, what normally takes them 1 hour (post race inspection), took them 3 hours, because now, the "cheaters" argument, doesn't hold up.

How in the hell can they justify a NO point loss for the #48 team????

They suspend Knaus for 3 races but don't take away any points??? Yet Jr says Shiat on TV and gets docked!!!
