True, but it's still good to see someone OTHER than Nascar's golden boy at the top spot, if even for just a little bit.

Once the chase starts anyone can win. It will only be 50 points to make up if he goes in to the chase in 10th. It really depends on running well in the last 10 races. One or two DNFs for anyone pretty much takes them out.

simply put................I've heard the 'drive for five' ever since 2001. five years later, its still going on.
as far as kyle busch, he has been consistently running better this season as well as he has the 1.5 mile tracks locked down for performance.

What a Race!
Kyle and Harvick battling it out in the closing laps.
Kahne racing his way in with the 3rd place finish.
Hamlin running on seven cylinders.
Gordon and Jr. (thanks Newman) both with no brakes at the end.
Stewart can't defend his title.
Kudos to Stewart though for his class in the post-race interview. Not like Jarrett two years ago.

NASCAR buying CASCAR UPDATE Official: [after years of rumors...] NASCAR today will unveil a Canadian-based stock car series that will feature a season-long points battle among the country's best drivers and end with the awarding of the Canadian Tire Cup. The Toronto Sun has learned that a deal to sell CASCAR -- Canada's top stock car racing series -- to the France family business that is NASCAR will be made official at a news conference today in Toronto and that Canadian Tire has signed on as the title sponsor. The deal, which has been two years in the making, will see NASCAR sanction a national stock car racing series in Canada on the foundation that has been laid by Tony Novotny and his wife, Linda, over the past 20 years. "It's finally going to happen," Linda Novotny said yesterday. At the Champ Car Grand Prix of Montreal last month CASCAR also became the first stock car series to race on an active Formula One track at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. It is the same track where the NASCAR Busch Series will hold its first-ever Canadian race in 2007. Robbie Weiss, NASCAR's international director, is flying in from his Los Angles office to make the proclamation about his company's future in the Great White North and while his office would not reveal why he is visiting Toronto, it's not likely just another glad-handing affair where Brian France gets his hands on some of that Canadian Tire money.
Speaking of CASCAR, all of a sudden it seems to be the place to be for two of Quebec's top open wheel racing drivers. A week ago Patrick Carpentier, a veteran of both Champ Car and the Indy Racing League, drew high praise for his sixth-place finish after he climbed into the Dave Jacombs Racing #88 Ford for CASCAR's Labour Day Classic at Cayuga Speedway. And this past Saturday at Montreal's Autodrome Ste. Eustache, 19-year-old Andrew Ranger, driver of the #27 MiJack Conquest Racing Lola in Champ Car, drove the same car to a 13th-place finish in his first try in the big sedans. Both Carpentier and Ranger have been paying attention to the NASCAR talk in their home province and both are likely to make bids to be part of the show there next season.(Toronto Sun)
UPDATE: In support of its initiatives across Canada, NASCAR announced the creation of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. Scheduled to launch in May 2007, the series includes a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Canadian Tire – an iconic Canadian brand with strong national presence. The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will operate nationally in Canada with a schedule of 10-12 races (May-October). The series will provide new racing opportunities for teams and drivers from the former CASCAR series. The official NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule, point fund and tracks will be announced at a later date. The series will receive support from NASCAR’s extensive resources, including competition, research and development, marketing, licensing and communications. A dedicated staff will operate the series, with NASCAR Canada providing additional support in sponsorship, licensing, marketing and media initiatives. In addition to becoming title sponsor of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Canadian Tire, the most-shopped general merchandiser in the country, will become the official automotive retailer of NASCAR in Canada. Canadian Tire will offer exclusive customer promotions, seasonal marketing programs and national advertising and in-store programs in partnership with NASCAR Canada. As part of the partnership agreement and its continued focus on being first-to-market with new and exciting products, Canadian Tire will explore licensing opportunities, including developing a new line of NASCAR products for the automotive aftermarket.
TSN, a NASCAR broadcast partner for more than 20 years, will help market the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and draw new fans to NASCAR and stock car racing in Canada. Among these efforts, TSN is developing a monthly magazine-style show that will showcase the many aspects of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. The program will spotlight the stars of the series, race news, updates and highlights.(NASCAR PR)(9-12-2006)

Alabama Track Complex Bears Name of Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Gulf Coast Entertainment announced plans to construct a major motorsports and entertainment park in southern Alabama. The investor group has narrowed its site choices to a location in Mobile County in the area across from the University of Mobile and two potential sites in adjacent Baldwin County--one on the Foley Beach Express and the other in central Baldwin County. The project - which is to include an asphalt speedway, a road course, a drag strip and a dirt track - will be named "Alabama Motorsports Park, A Dale Earnhardt Jr. Speedway." Joining the motorsports star and a diverse group of investors from various southern states in participation in the project are Kelley Earnhardt Elledge and Kerry Earnhardt, marking the siblings' first professional collaboration. "Our family business is racing and it's been our business for three generations," said Dale Earnhardt Jr. "Kelley, Kerry and I want to continue the family business with hopes that the next generation of Earnhardts will want to be involved in the sport. This new venture with the Alabama Motorsports Park provides yet another avenue in which the Earnhardt family can participate. The site plan developed by HOK Sport of Kansas City includes parking, a significant RV resort, multiple music theaters and an arena and reserves land for commercial, residential and light industrial activities. The schedule calls for the project to be completed in the fall of 2009. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has provided input on the lighted, 75,000-seat, 7/10-mile oval. Features will include pedestrian/vehicle tunnels and banking and multiple grooves to promote close racing with extensive passing opportunities. Kerry Earnhardt has provided input on both the track and on a freshwater lake that investors believe will attract national fishing events. The 3.5-mile road course will feature two distinct but connected segments to enhance testing on the track. The 1/4-mile drag strip and 3/8-mile dirt track will be designed to attract national events. The park's website, www.alabamamotorsportspark.com , will provide future project and construction updates.(PSE-3 PR)(9-12-2006)

So...who is everybody picking to win the Chase this year?
I myself see Kenseth winning his second Cup Championship. He is back to his consistant 2003 form, and with his 4 wins (tied for second most) will be hard to knock off.
I think the real wild card in here is Kahne. Now that he has made it, there are several 1 1/2 mile tracks in the Chase. Considering he won 3 times on 1 1/2 mile tracks and 2 times on 2 mile, he could surprise a lot of people being the only Dodge in the field.
The sentimental pick would be Mark Martin. It would really be nice to see him leave (well...maybe leave) with a championship.

I have one of those sinking feelings it'll be Jimmie Johnson. Afterall he's won almost every prestigious race this year.

The ALMS fantasy league on the ALMS website is pretty cool if you dont mind paying for it. Which I wasnt going to pay for. If you come in first place you actually get a championship throphy. HOW THE HELL DOES THIS HAPPEN IN THIS DAY AND AGE?
With all the telemetry at their disposal, you'd think they would have consumption down to the ounce.
Christ, if a pit chief let the car run dry in F1 or at Lemans he'd be off to the guillotene.

Well I got back from the 2006 Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta a few hours ago. Nice race, not as much crash action as last year, but good race still. I thought I would share the pics with you guys.
Was hoping to get more shots as we walked the grid but the mass of people was just insane. I have to say the grid walk is awesome though, you are basically close enough to touch the cars and most of the drivers are by their cars.

NASCAR changes restrictor plates to slow speeds at Talladega
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer
October 7, 2006
AP - Oct 6, 5:52 pm EDT
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) -- NASCAR will use smaller restrictor plates Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway to cut back speeds that approached 200 mph during practice sessions on the freshly paved track.
Teams and drivers were told of the change as they arrived for work Saturday morning.
The new plates will have four holes of seven-eighths of an inch in diameter, or one-64th smaller than the ones used Friday. Jeff Gordon set a top speed of 198.689 in one of Friday's two practice sessions.
Although NASCAR officials said they weren't concerned with the speeds during practice, they changed their mind following an evening meeting.
``We tried to downplay it and we didn't want to make a knee-jerk reaction,'' competition director Robin Pemberton said. ``We were hoping that the speeds would go the other way.''
The plates are expected to bring speeds back down around the 195-mph mark that was reached in the May race here.
``We've got our comfort zone,'' Pemberton said. ``We think we've been right there at the threshold for some time now.''
Restrictor plates are used at Talladega and Daytona, NASCAR's two biggest race tracks because the wide open lanes create speeds that would easily surpass 200 mph. The carburetor plates are designed to sap the horsepower and make the speeds much more manageable.
But Talladega repaved the track over the summer, and the new asphalt created a smooth surface with better grip -- a perfect scenario for creating faster speeds. The drivers -- 18 of whom eclipsed 197 mph on Friday -- loved it and said it wasn't a big deal.
``The only reason the average speed of the lap is up is that we're maintaining more corner speed,'' said five-time Talladega winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. ``We're not going any faster at the flagstand than we were in the past. We're able to hold greater speed in the center of the corners because we're not sliding so much.
``So I ain't got no big worry. The cars are so easy to drive, 90 percent of the people inside this racetrack right now could drive them.''
Restrictor plates were introduced after a 1987 accident here when Bobby Allison's car went airborne and through the fence -- narrowly avoiding the grandstands. Bill Elliott set the track record that year with a qualifying mark of 212.809 mph that still stands.
The plates went into effect for the 1988 season, and Davey Allison won the Talladega pole at 203.827 mph -- the last time a lap has eclipsed 200.

further elaboration on Harvick's sponsership......
Shell Oil Company announced the brand’s return to NASCAR today through a multi-year primary sponsorship of Richard Childress Racing (RCR). Through the sponsorship both Shell and Pennzoil brands will be featured on the #29 Chevy to be driven by Kevin Harvick in the 2007 Nextel Cup series. Shell will also be the associate sponsor on other RCR cars including the #31 Cup car driven by Jeff Burton and the #07 Cup car driven by Clint Bowyer.
“We’re proud to have Shell come on-board as the primary sponsor of RCR’s #29 team with Kevin Harvick,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. “Shell has a long history in motorsports throughout the world and we look forward to adding to that winning tradition. We’re fortunate to once again have a sponsor for the #29 team that is committed to supporting its racing program in a lot of exciting ways. We’re also proud to be continuing our relationship with GM Goodwrench and the winning tradition we’ve had together for more than two decades.”
The company’s technological leadership and its innovative products have helped position Shell as the “preferred partner” both on and off the track for some of the auto industry’s top companies including General Motors (GM), Ferrari and Audi. The new alliance with Richard Childress Racing and Kevin Harvick bring together the market share leader in fuels and lubricants with a #1 team, which makes a formidable combination.
“Our plan with RCR and Kevin Harvick is pretty simple; have fun with our employees, wholesalers, retailers, distributors and customers through a sport we all love,” said John Hofmeister, president, Shell Oil Company. “It’s also about aligning the leading fuels and lubricants brands with a winner on the track so we can create innovative marketing platforms and products that drive business. NASCAR fans and Shell customers are one in the same, and rejoining Shell with the NASCAR family is the next logical step in our global motorsports platform.”
Shell lubricant brands, Pennzoil, Quaker State and ROTELLA T, have all been collectively active in NASCAR for several decades. Additionally, Pennzoil has maintained a variety of sponsorships and technical partnerships with DEI and Roush Racing, while Quaker State has been with Hendrick Motorsports since 1995. This season, ROTELLA T and Morgan Dollar Racing with Dennis Setzer are partners in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
GM Goodwrench, currently the primary sponsor of Harvick’s #29 car, will also continue to support RCR racing and Kevin Harvick as an associate sponsor. “We’re pleased that GM Goodwrench will continue to have a presence on the car,” added Hofmeister. “To be associated with a sponsor with a strong history in motorsports is really the icing on the cake. This new relationship on the track will complement the many programs we have with General Motors off the track. We’re working together to make hydrogen available to consumers through a local Shell station in Washington, D.C; in Chicago we have a joint test pilot to gauge consumer interest in E85, and we provide supply for some of GM’s lubricants needs.”
While no immediate plans were shared with regard to the company’s marketing efforts in NASCAR, Shell officials said more news will be forthcoming on activations plans surrounding Richard Childress Racing and the #29 Shell car. For more information about Shell, visit www.shell.com.

Ok the I hope this isnt true. The first two are fine, could have seen those two from a mile away, but why in the hell would Brad Daugherty be a Nascar announcer. If it does stay that way, maybe he will prove me wrong, but I just dont see that he could add that much to a race broadcast.

Jeffy not to happy with Jr, and Jr doesn't really care!!
I love it!!
BUMP THIS Jeff Gordon saw his title hopes take another hit, when he was caught in the day’s biggest accident, a 13-car melee on Lap 138. Afterwards, a visibly frustrated Gordon ripped NASCAR for not policing bump drafting, the process where a car bumps the one in front of it to increase the speed of both. “The thing I don't understand is that NASCAR has been talking about bump-drafting for I don't know how many times we've come here and to Daytona, and they said it in the driver's meeting and they weren't doing a thing about it out there,” Gordon fumed. “I mean guys were just bump-drafting. And the more they do it, the more they get away with it, the less they (NASCAR) seem to care. I know they care, but they're just not doing anything about it. You've got to stop it when it starts. And guys were slamming into one another and hitting each other in the corner and yeah, we're in control - it's a great race track and it's got a lot of grip and the banking and everything is wonderful, but eventually just what happened is going to happen.”
A DISSENTING OPINION While Jeff Gordon was furious with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. for bump drafting him, Earnhardt was equally furious with Gordon for what he perceived to be whining about it. “I pushed Jeff Gordon into the lead five times and every time I do that, he complains that I'm bump-drafting him in the corners and blah, blah, blah,” said Earnhardt. “So I'm just not going to push him anymore. Besides, every time I help him out, he never gives it back in return. That's why he don't have too many friends out there. I dont really know how you could be that upset. I mean you kind of have to go into this race knowing that something like this could happen. One reason they should go to 1 race or so for each plate track and put more road courses on the schedule.

An entire career of annomitity for Vickers is ruined after he had the audacity to make a mistake near the messiah Dale Jr :D
Dale Jr is taking this a whole lot better than his fans are, and much better than Johnson. JJ wasn't going to win that race unless Vickers went with him. If Johnson pulled out to pass Jr and Vickers didn't go with him he would have been hammered for not being a good teammate. He was doing what he had to do to push Johnson to the win, and misjudged the distance. If there's anyone who can't complain about wrecks at Talladega it's Jimmie Johnson. Talk about those in glass houses :p.

I was very disappointed in what Jimmie said after the race. I know he didnt do it on purpose. He was just trying to help him and then Jimmie comes out and slams him. Jr really shocked me at how he handled basically saying thats how this kind of racing is.
The fans are just a whole different story. I mean I can see being mad, but the way some of them are talking Vickers will be assassinated before the week is out. It isnt that serious. Listening to wind tunnel last night made me kind of sick to hear all the whining.

Not sure exactly where you have been hearing Brian talk, pretty much every time I hear him talk about it, he says he was just a mistake and he was sorry it happened. It was pretty clear what happened, he tried to get behind Jimmie but clipped. It is kind of hard to pass blame on that.

Jimmie Johnson not in a forgiving mood
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer
October 10, 2006
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Here's one thing race fans won't see any time soon: Jimmie Johnson and Brian Vickers buddying up at the track, or anywhere else.
Johnson's anger toward his teammate and friend had not subsided Tuesday, two days after Vickers wrecked Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the final lap at Talladega Superspeedway.
Johnson spent the bulk of his weekly conference call avoiding even mentioning Vickers' name, finally unloading on his teammate about 20 minutes in when asked if the two had spoken.
``I got a message from him, but that was about it,'' Johnson said. ``I don't have much to say or much to talk to him about.''
Asked if their relationship had changed, Johnson said he wasn't sure because it had only been two days since the incident. But it didn't sound as if Johnson has any plans to forgive Vickers any time soon.
``I have a hard time feeling he was really sorry for what he's done,'' Johnson said. ``At the same time I know it wasn't intentional so I just kind of go on, (but) if I look at the interviews and the quotes and the message that Brian left me, I wouldn't take it as an apology by any stretch of the imagination. That's where I am at.''
Earnhardt was leading on the final lap of Sunday's race at Talladega, with the two Hendrick Motorsports drivers running second and third. Johnson attempted to pass Earnhardt heading into the third turn and Vickers followed to help push him into the lead.
But Vickers hooked the back of Johnson instead of pushing him, and the contact sent Johnson spinning into Earnhardt. Vickers darted by both of them for his first Nextel Cup victory.
The outcome hurt both Johnson and Earnhardt in the Chase for the championship standings. Vickers, who is not eligible for the Nextel Cup title, is leaving Hendrick at the end of the season to drive for Toyota next year.
His impending departure has gotten him locked out of Hendrick team meetings, and racing incidents with teammate Jeff Gordon in New Hampshire last month and now Johnson has caused friction between the once close-knit group.
But Vickers said he believes he and Johnson can get past Talladega.
``Do I think Jimmie is upset? Yes, of course he is. Do I think we can fix that? Absolutely,'' he said after the race. ``Jimmie is a great person, he is a very mature man and I am sure when the time is right, we will have our opportunity to work things out.''
Sunday's outcome also has been awkward for car owner Rick Hendrick, Johnson said.
Hendrick is like a second father to Vickers, who was very close to Ricky Hendrick -- Rick's son -- before his death in a 2004 plane crash. And Vickers' win was done in the No. 25 Chevrolet, which was owned by Rick Hendrick's late father, Papa Joe, and run by Ricky.
Hendrick had an emotional discussion with Vickers in Victory Lane, then left the track without talking to reporters.
``Rick's view is that he's the highest of highs and the lowest of lows,'' Johnson said. ``His father's team got back to Victory Lane, but at the expense of one of his other cars taking a hit in the points. I think it's tough for him. He's happy, he's bummed.
``It's the same way that I am and my team is. But at the end of the day, I'm happy for the No. 25 team. They've been working very hard to get where they are, and they've been close to winning. So I am happy for those guys. But I'm disappointed that I lost all those points that I did. And I think that's just kind of the overall feeling that everybody has.''

from the last part of the article you linked to:
Smith said this isn't the first time he's beefed up security for a driver.
``I think the last time was for Rusty (Wallace) when he knocked Darrell (Waltrip) out of the way to win the All-Star race back in 1989,'' Smith said. ``We added security at his house and track the week of the Coca-Cola 600.'
I really don't think this is a PR stunt, more or less an overreaction.

The official lineup for ESPN's broadcast
OFFICIAL: NASCAR will return to ESPN and ABC in 2007 with a powerful and experienced team of television and NASCAR championship veterans, led by host Brent Musburger, an accomplished and prominent sports commentator; Rusty Wallace, the 1989 NASCAR champion who made his debut as an analyst in 2006; and play-by-play announcer Jerry Punch, a veteran of ESPN's previous NASCAR coverage. Television newcomer Andy Petree, a former team owner and the 1993-94 championship-winning crew chief for the late Dale Earnhardt, will join Punch and Wallace as an analyst for a booth with nearly 90 years experience in motorsports. The trio will team with veteran pit reporters with a combined 45 additional years of motorsports experience - Allen Bestwick, Dave Burns, Jamie Little and Mike Massaro.
ESPN also is planning for a comprehensive, up-to-the-minute NASCAR Countdown show to immediately precede all NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series races televised on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC. Musburger will serve as NASCAR Countdown host for all races airing on ABC, including the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and select ESPN races including Daytona and the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. NASCAR Countdown will be telecast from a new, state-of-the-art mobile pit studio that also will be an integral part of race telecasts.
All telecasts will be in high-definition under the leadership of ESPN Executive Vice President, Studio and Remote Production Norby Williamson, Senior Vice President and Executive Producer Jed Drake, Senior Coordinating Producer Rich Feinberg, who led ESPN's NASCAR efforts in the 1990s, and Senior Motorsports Producer Neil Goldberg, who returns to ESPN after producing FOX's NASCAR races the past six years. Feinberg and Goldberg have won numerous Sports Emmy Awards and were part of the team behind ESPN's motorsports series Speedworld, which won 17 Sports Emmys in the 1990s. Richie Basile, who has served as FOX's NASCAR technical director, will direct.
At a news conference at Lowe's Motor Speedway Thursday, ESPN also announced that 1999 NASCAR champion Dale Jarrett will join Punch and Petree in the booth for select NASCAR Busch Series races on ESPN2 and ABC.
"When NASCAR returns 'home' to ABC and ESPN, fans will instantly recognize the passion and expertise that distinguished our coverage for 30 years, but now applied with an unprecedented, multimedia commitment," said ESPN and ABC Sports President George Bodenheimer. "The extent of our coverage and our talent and production team will set a new standard for service to NASCAR fans." ESPN's return to NASCAR kicks off with coverage of the NASCAR Busch Series season-opener at Daytona International Speedway, Feb. 17, 2007 on ESPN2.
"We are proud to once again call ABC/ESPN our partner," said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France. "The team has already shown a remarkable enthusiasm for NASCAR in its preparation for its entry in 2007. Sports fans will be the big winners as ESPN will provide terrific NASCAR content on its television broadcasts and beyond including each of its media platforms." Drake added, "As we reunite NASCAR with ESPN, we have assembled a deep and knowledgeable commentator team with varied motorsports backgrounds. Our group will bring the excitement of NASCAR to the audience with the same enthusiasm that NASCAR fans have for their sport."
And to get fans prepared for the new season, NASCAR Now will debut on ESPN2 on Feb. 5, 2007, marking the network's first-ever daily program solely dedicated to NASCAR. NASCAR Now will deliver the most up-to-date news and information each Monday through Friday evening and will feature NASCAR reporters and analysts including five-time NBA All-Star and former winning NASCAR team owner Brad Daugherty, former NASCAR crew chief Frank Stoddard, a 14-race winner with Jeff Burton, and veteran racing TV reporter Shannon Spake among others to be named. Musburger, Daugherty, Stoddard and others will work from the pit studio during the NASCAR Countdown shows and during the race telecasts.
ESPN2 is planning special editions of NASCAR Now to air on the day of all NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races, starting with the Daytona 500. A race preview show will air at 11am/et on race day, with a post-race edition to run on ESPN2 in the evening following the event. NASCAR Now and NASCAR Countdown will be produced under the leadership of ESPN Senior Vice President/Managing Editor of Studio Production Mark Gross, Vice President of Studio Production Mike McQuade and Senior Coordinating Producer Jack Obringer.
ESPN's comprehensive coverage also will extend to its new media platforms, with extensive coverage on ESPN.com - the leading online sports destination that reaches as many as 20 million fans per month. Among the many features will be a weekly Monday Rundown, Wallace's weekly Rusty Nails It column and regularly updated NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Power Rankings. In addition, ESPN.com will continue to collaborate with the popular Jayski's Silly Season Site that features news, rumors and commentary on the happenings in NASCAR. Additionally, ESPN Motion, ESPN360 and the ESPN PodCenter will deliver comprehensive multimedia race coverage including select live video, on-demand online video and podcasts.
Also in 2007, ESPN Deportes will become the Spanish-language home of NASCAR, highlighted by a special onsite presentation of the NASCAR Busch Series race from Mexico City in March. ESPN Deportes' NASCAR commentator team will feature Andrés Agulla (play-by-play) and Alex Pombo (analysis). ESPN and ABC will have comprehensive, multi-platform coverage featuring telecasts of the final 17 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races including the 10-race "Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup" championship on ABC. Additionally, ESPN2 will be the home of the NASCAR Busch Series all season. ESPN aired 262 NASCAR Cup Races over a 20-year period starting in 1981. The network's award-winning, live flag-to-flag coverage on ESPN was honored with 17 Sports Emmy Awards, as well as many industry honors. It is widely credited for helping to popularize the sport nationwide. ESPN2 is seen in 91.7 million homes, virtually equal to ESPN's 92.3. NASCAR races have appeared on ABC for decades, beginning with broadcasts on the award-winning Wide World of Sports program in the 1960s.(ESPN PR),

Robby Gordon switching to Ford
By MIKE CRANSTON, AP Sports Writer
October 14, 2006
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Ford needed experience and Robby Gordon wanted a higher profile.
Gordon announced Saturday he'll move his one-car, driver-owned team next season from Chevrolet to Ford, which is still reeling from the upcoming loss of Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett to other manufacturers.
Gordon, who gets his motors from Dale Earnhardt Inc., has been low in the pecking order at Chevrolet, which has seven drivers in the Chase the championship. Going into Saturday night's race at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Gordon had no victories and only one top-five finish. He'll have a relationship with Roush-Yates engine program when he switches to Ford.
``I would give ourselves a 15th-place car with where we're at,'' Gordon said. ``What we're looking to build with Ford is how do we win races again, how do we get into the top five and top 10s? We will use their tools, their engineers, their wind tunnel time and all of their engineering stuff to help them improve our program.''
Gordon hopes his addition will help push Ford compete against Chevrolet's stable and Toyota, which enters Nextel Cup in 2007.
``Ford has some good drivers. If you look at Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth, they've got their fleet of good drivers as well,'' Gordon said. ``There was an opportunity for us to take a faster step to the top with Ford Motor Co. Chevrolet obviously has strong teams and Ford is going to need strong teams to compete against them.''
Gordon, who started his career with Ford in 1990 before switching to Chevrolet, said he won't test Fords until after he finishes the season, but didn't rule out having another driver test Fords this fall.
``We want to end our relationship with Chevrolet at the end of this year on a different note than we ended our Ford relationship 10 years ago,'' Gordon said. ``We will wait until after the season. It doesn't mean I won't have another driver putting some miles on a Ford car before the end of the season.''
Ford director of racing Dan Davis believes Gordon can become a consistent top-10 driver.
``I think Robby has the top single-car team out there,'' Davis said.

TNT looking at no commercial breaks in 2007? Sports Business Journal reports that TNT is floating a package to potential advertisers that would allow advertising during the race broadcast and eliminate commercial breaks. The advertising would take place on the screen during the broadcast and allow continuous race coverage. TNT will broadcast six Nextel Cup races next summer. The story reports that officials from Turner and NASCAR would not comment. The story also reported that TNT's Cup ratings are down 8.3% from last season.

Official...Allmendinger to drive 2nd Red Bull car in 2007, #84: 2006 Team Red Bull formally announces a multi-year agreement with American open-wheel race car driver AJ Allmendinger to race the #84 Red Bull Toyota Camry for the 2007 Nextel Cup season. AJ completes the 2007 driver line-up for Team Red Bull that already includes 23- year-old Brian Vickers, who’ll pilot the #83 Red Bull Toyota Camry. Rick Viers, the veteran crew chief who guided the 24-year-old Californian through two successful NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races for Bill Davis Racing earlier this year, also joins Team Red Bull in the same role for 2007. A former Toyota Atlantic champion and Champ Car rookie of the year, AJ currently stands second in the 2006 Champ Car World Series standings with five race wins. To speed up his acclimation to stock car racing, Bill Elliott has graciously agreed to step aside and let AJ take on driver duties in the Team Red Bull entry for the upcoming 2006 Nextel Cup races at Atlanta and Texas. More info on the Red Bull teams at redbullusa.com.(Red Bull Racing PR), see quotes from Allmendiner on the #84 Team News and Links page.
Oh well I guess Cart lost its only American driver in the field. Too bad I wish Cart would get more attention. It is the better of the Open Wheel series in america.

More and more drivers are going full time next year. Anyone think Nascar might increase the number of cars in each race?

No since some tracks don't have enough pit spaces for 43

What is wrong with that? It was a tragic event that quite a few people lost their lives.
maybe the fact that they mention it every single time the Cup series goes there........Spring too!
The comment about them mentioned Dale Sr. at Daytona doesn't fly.........you can't honestly compare Dale Sr. to Ricky Hendrick. He wasn't even racing anymore!
It was a big loss for the Nascar community, I get that, but if Rick Hendrick himself still doesn't even come to the track, that should tell you to leave well enough alone and let those people rest in peace.

It was a big lost to Hendrick motorsports. They seem to be a pretty close bunch over there. Ricky Hendrick wasnt the only one that died either. They lost 10 people from their organization. It might not be that big to you since you didnt really know any of them, but I am pretty sure it was a big loss to them.

I'm sure it was a big loss.........and yes I know that nine were from the organization along with Stewart's helicopter pilot. But when they mention it, all they ever talk about is the loss of lil' ol' Ricky.
I think the biggest loss that they sustained (personal loss excluded), Randy Dorton being in the airplane.........it took awhile to surface, but with him no longer building the engines has certainly hurt the whole organization.
I know all about the situation, just tired of hearing about it as I'm sure Rick Hendrick is as well.
