Intimidating legacy
By Jerry Bonkowski,
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – It's a date that never will be celebrated, nor will it be forgotten: Feb. 18, 2001.
That day rocked NASCAR to its core. Whether you loved him or hated him, you couldn't help but have been shocked at how Dale Earnhardt, the iron man of stock car racing, the guy everyone thought was indestructible, lost his life.
On the final lap of the world's biggest race, the Daytona 500, with the checkered flag waving in the distance, the man whose nickname of The Intimidator instilled fear and apprehension into almost every one of his competitors, crashed his notorious black No. 3 race car in Turn 4 and, just like that, was gone.
It wasn't even one of those spectacular, fiery crashes that make the highlight reels. But it was enough.
Earnhardt's death was front-page news worldwide for several days. It spawned high profile investigations, court fights over autopsy photos and the development and adoption of unprecedented safety measures. Its impact, in a sense, still can be felt today as Earnhardt's widow Teresa and his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. battle for control of his company, Dale Earnhardt Inc.
The fascination with all things Earnhardt just doesn't seem to want to fade.
This is especially true each time February rolls around, as NASCAR fans inevitably focus on Speedweeks and the Daytona 500, and yet another anniversary of Earnhardt's death. This perhaps is even more relevant at this year's running of the Great American Race.
For while this Feb. 18 marks the sixth anniversary of Earnhardt's death, it will be the first time since 2001 that notable date falls on a Sunday – and therefore also is the first time the Daytona 500 will be run on the actual anniversary.
And with it, all the recollections of that fateful day return to us, from Earnhardt's bold prerace prediction on Fox TV that we would "see something you've never seen before" to Darrell Waltrip's tear-filled stretch run call of brother Michael's victory, to Waltrip's haunting plea a few seconds later of "How's Dale? Is Dale OK?"
Come Sunday, will those of us in attendance at Daytona and the millions more watching on TV crane our necks to stare at Turn 4 and the exact spot where Earnhardt was killed? Will we watch Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s every move in the garage, the pits and ultimately behind the wheel, knowing what the memory of this day means to him, wondering how it may weigh upon his mind?
Will fans again hold three fingers in the air in tribute? Will we allow or minds to wander three more years back to Feb. 15, 1998, when Earnhardt, after 19 years of disappointment and frustration at a track he otherwise owned and dominated, finally tamed the Daytona 500?
All that and more will be part of NASCAR's collective consciousness Sunday, but there also is a new opportunity this year to remember and honor Earnhardt.
The recently-released movie "Dale" – endorsed by the Earnhardt family – brings memories and recollections flooding back to us in a way that will almost make it feel like the Man In Black is still around.
And for all those new NASCAR fans who have attached themselves to the sport since Earnhardt's death – either via Dale Earnhardt Jr. or the unprecedented growth the sport has enjoyed – I highly recommend everyone see the film to get a taste of who Earnhardt truly was.
Sure, he was an old cuss at times. He was a guy his fans loved with a passion reserved for a spouse, and one non-fans loved to hate but still respected for being who he was and possessing the talent he did.
But the seven-time Cup champion also had a soft side that many people rarely saw – and "Dale" will help many come to realize just the kind of person Earnhardt really was deep down inside. He may have been a fierce competitor, but he also had a deep and giving heart.
Earnhardt's presence can be felt every race weekend. At every Nextel Cup race are trailers dedicated exclusively to Earnhardt merchandise. There are new t-shirts, caps, jackets and other memorabilia with different schemes released at the beginning of each season – leading some to believe that Earnhardt's name, image and memory are being used as nothing more than a cash cow for DEI.
Regardless of intent, the fact is Earnhardt still sells – and likely will continue to sell for many years to come. It just goes to show that his legion of fans have not, and likely never will, forget him.
Earnhardt will live on much like Elvis Presley, who will be dead 30 years this year but continues to be alive in the hearts and minds of many. Both were icons, and both are gone, but the memories and legacies remain.
Feb. 18, 2001 is one of those days that makes NASCAR fans and beyond recall exactly where they were when they saw the crash that killed Earnhardt, or where they first heard the news. If you were a NASCAR fan, time invariably stopped and the world stood still.
Sunday will be six years to the day that the grizzled, mustachioed face and spirit of NASCAR left us. It's the one day of the year we know is highlighted on the calendar, but we'd rather forget why.

I know all the teams cheat. If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin' as they say.
The thing is, its ingenuity until you get caught, then its CHEATING. I know it doesn't make sense, but that is just how it is.
And if you break the rules, its cheating.....there was a rule against that part being too low.....and Gordon didn't get penalized....the Evernham cars didn't break any rule whatsoever....they just misinterpreted the rules......and they did get penalized.
Now, after you guys confirm this, please tell me how that isn't favortism?

02-17-2007, 06:26 PM
Well what is the difference between breaking the rule and misinterpreting a rule, if it is still illegal? I havent really paid attention to all the things that were getting penalties for so I dont know what the did. Gordon did get penalized. He had to drop the the back of the pack to start the race. It might not be a lose of money or points but it is still a penalty from where he was starting of 4th.
I SMELL SWEEP!!!!
Actually, what you are smelling is Jeremy Mayfield opening up Sterling Marlin's coach and farting in it. How's about that for Waste Management Marlin??? :p
LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!
"Dag'um dag'on dang'um bug eyed dummy dag'um dun farted in mah daag'um couch!"
LMAO...I dag'um betcha that is exactly what Marlin would say.
Sinsightful
02-18-2007, 07:41 AM
avsfan, what I mean is, that Sadler and Riggs didn't break or misinterpret the rule because there wasn't a rule until Nascar caught them.....Sadler said this on Trackside the other night.
and for Gordon being penalized? I hardly think dropping back to the back on a plate race is even close to fines and point deductions.

one of the teams in the LuckyDog Yahoo site has a website listed for everyone to check out:
www.p10select.com
While I was looking that one over, I saw a link to www.TVRacer.com, this one is pretty cool. Not only does it list all the Nascar-related races on that site but it also deals with just about any type of racing programs....everything from Daytona 500 champ on Letterman to Moonshining on National Geographic.
I thought it was cool and I'm sure a number of you would want to know about this.

It did no harm in not throwing it, and it made for an exciting finish.
Unfortunately Mark came out short - but Kevin had the run and had him beat before they started stacking up behind him, so why should he get the short end of it.

My thoughts on the race today.
The finish....gotta say that by the rules, Martin should have been the winner...but I've never liked not racing back to the flag. Kyle Bush is the biggest idiot in racing...learn some patience! Matt Kenseth causes more wrecks than any other driver....and rarely ever gets caught up in the mess he creates. Am I the only one who thought that Kurt Bush could have lifted and avoided taking Stewart and himself out of the race? I was very impressed with David Gilliland and thought Ricky Rudd deserved better than what he had happen to him. All in all...a good race and a fitting ending to a controversial week.

Richmond is my favorite track because its big enough to get some good speeds but small enough to give you some good action as well. I was there for the first time 2 years ago and loved every lap. Here's my opinion on the finish, and what should of happened. It was Nascar who made the "No racing back to the caution", so they have strategically placed points on each track in which they guage who the leader is at the closest point when the yellow drops. The problem is they decided not to drop the caution flag when Busch was spinning, which IMO was wrong. The caution should of flew at that point. The question then would of been was it Harvick, or Martin who would be in the lead at that point, and it very well may have been Harvick anyways depending on when it flew, and at what part of the track. That is what should of happened, but they decided not to drop the caution. It may not of mattered one way, or another, but they should of had the caution immediately. Nascar got it wrong. Sorry, but they set the rules, and should follow them. :(

Some good points, but imagine the controversy if Harvick was ahead of Martin when the flag came out but Martin gets credited with the win due to the last timing pylon. Think Gordon/Earnhardt Jr at Dega, and what chaos that caused. I think there would be controversy no matter what they did, but this was the least controversial thing to do....just let them race the last few yards to the line and decide it amongst themselves.

I'm all for letting them race to the line too, but that is not the way Nascar has decided to do things. They need to be consistant in the way things are done. The rules shouldn't change race to race, or driver to driver. That is all we ask as fans. I would of loved to have seen Mark Martin win that race, but only if it was because of the way the rules are in place. The wreck started back far enough that the caution could of dropped way before the 2 hit the start/finish. Whoever was leading at that point should of been declared the winner. I guess we'll never know who would of been first at that point. It may have been the exact same results as what we got, but at least it would of been right.

Just FYI - I was just watching Windtunnell on speed and they have analyzed the tapes and Harvick WAS ahead of Mark at the time the wreck started - so either way he would have won the race

Cool! That is what I needed to hear, so the right driver was credited with the win then, as far as I'm concerned. Case closed! :)

Yup they have replayed it a bunch of times and you can see Kevin in front as they start to get sideways behind them

According to Nascar Harvick took the win under yellow.
NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston gave this official statement 90 minutes after the race ended: "When the 07 [Bowyer's car] got sideways on track, the yellow came out at that time," Poston said. "The 29 [Harvick] was ahead of the 01 [Martin] at that time and declared the winner taking the checkered flag."
Harvick was ahead when Busch spins, but Martin goes back in front soon after. Martin and Harvick traded the lead back and forth the last few yards, so I guess it depended on when Nascar offically decided to put the lights on and not when the first car spun.

On a side note I checked out the free preview for NASCAR hot pass on directv and it was pretty cool. I watched Harvick's march to the front from his in car camera which was really nice. Only drawback is you dont get to pick which drivers you want to watch. They select 6 drivers each week and give them each a channel.

I purchased Nascar InDemand last year, which is now gone because of the Direct TV deal, however I loved watching the in car, especially at the plate races. InDemand held a vote each thurs-sat and the top 5 got a channel. Although I doubt they'll do this, I'd also be surprised if Dale Jr desn't have a channel each week :-). I'm working on switching to Direct TV to get the hot pass, however it looks like i'm screwed cause I don't have a land line, just our cell phones and Direct TV says I have to have them hooked up to a land line at all times. You'd think they'd have a net based version out by now.

I have never hooked my direct tv up to the land line, and I have had mine for close to 15 years now. All that is for is so when you order PPV's etc... through the remote, it transfers the info. If you want to order PPVs or anything, just order online. They can't make you hook up to a land line.

If you have the Tivo via DirectTv you do need to hook it up to the land line. Not sure about DirectTv's own DVR receiver... Other than that, you are correct....

That's what I was told. The landline was only for ordering PPV. I dont know about TiVo though. I have a couple friends the have DTV's TiVO service. I will ask them if they have it hooked up to a landline.

Yes the tivo/directtv units require the phone line every 30 days
but if you have a tivo series 2 and a stand alone Directtv received you can use the net to do your tivo updates

Yeah the DirectTv DVR sucks, in fact most other DVR that I have seen and messed with sucked compared to Tivo. Tivo seems so seamless and smooth where as all other DVR seem choppy and delayed when you press rewind, play, pause and what not. It's a shame that DirectTv and Tivo did not renew with one another....

Yeah, there are a lot of different ways to the track depending on which dirrection you're coming in from. As for as places to stay you'd better be finding one soon. Almost every hotel from Roanoke to Greensboro gets booked months in advance.

I stayed at a campground in Wytheville VA last year when I went. Its about an hour away from the track. The cabin we stayed in was very clean and the prices where very reasonable compared to the stuff closer to Bristol. The best part about the place is there is a go-kart track 2 minutes away with a slick track and a banked track where the go-karts go about 35-40 mph. We spent the whole day running laps at that place. As Bronko stated earlier you better start trying to get a place now. Here is the website for the place I stayed at:

HIGH-OCTANE CLASH
Harvick's helmet fuels backlash
After fueling concerns, sponsor's ads to change
JIM UTTER
jutter@charlotteobserver.com
It appears there was something that failed inspection after Sunday's Daytona 500 -- the uniform and helmet worn by race winner Kevin Harvick.
Facing complaints from Sunoco, the official fuel supplier of NASCAR, the sanctioning body has been in discussions with Harvick's Richard Childress Racing team to address concerns over Shell-Pennzoil's sponsorship on Harvick's uniform and helmet.
In response to those complaints, Harvick can no longer wear the driver's helmet used Sunday, which featured a prominent Shell logo, and his uniform will have to be redone to include less prominent Shell logos, multiple sources confirmed.
Before the Daytona 500, sources confirmed Harvick was asked by NASCAR if he would wear a jacket over his uniform during introductions, which he agreed to do.
During Speedweeks, officials with Sunoco lodged several complaints with NASCAR regarding the Shell logos on Harvick's helmet and uniform. They hit a crest when Harvick's victories in Saturday's Busch race and Sunday's 500 produced several newspaper headlines utilizing the Shell name and many photographs of the logos.
Sunoco signed a 10-year deal in 2003 to become the official fuel supplier for NASCAR's three national series -- Nextel Cup, Busch and Trucks.
As part of the deal, no new fuel suppliers are allowed to sponsor teams, NASCAR officials said. Shell-Pennzoil was allowed to join RCR and Harvick's No. 29 Chevrolet this season because the sponsorship was for its automotive lubricants.
Sunoco's complaints are based on the extent Shell-Pennzoil's branding is seen promoting its gas product over its automobile lubricants.
"In exchange for providing a quality product for all three series, Sunoco was granted exclusivity in the fuel category at the track," said NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston.
"We're always trying to work with our sponsors and teams to navigate through any challenges, especially the automotive lubricant category, which is closely aligned with fuel."
A message seeking comment from Sunoco's media contact was not returned.
Until a new helmet can be designed, Harvick is expected to wear one he uses in Busch Series races, sponsored by another company. His new uniform should be ready for this weekend's race at California, sources said.
