Sweet Paul!!!

From what I read Kevin is a great signer!!

:D

Posse

He is pretty cool to talk to as well. I have a couple of autos from him when the Busch series used to race at Nazareth speedway. I also got him to sign his rookie of the year car when he did a signing here at a NASCAR store.

Yeah he is an awesome signer - I sent him 4 photos last year 2ea from both Busch races and he signed all 4 for me (2 for me 2 for Wolf Park)

He has always been very cool through the mail

Thats cool. I never thought of sending something through the mail. I have a pic I took with him here but I never saved it on my pc. I have it hanging on my wall.

Cold pass on race day doesn't even get you on pit road - it gets you along the back side of pit road between the suites and garages - it is still cool if you get there early. And stake your ground, as it gets busy.

Best tip - find the tunnell by the restroom (the ones in the grage between cup and busch) - as most drivers go there after their drive around in the pickups just before they get in their cars- That's where I got most of my auto's a few years ago

You can't mess around with the king of restarts behind you ;) . Ironically, I don't know why the caution flag didn't come out for so long. Martin spun before he even took the green, and the caution didn't come out until Skinner had time to pass Hornaday into turn one.

Although Harvick got hit with some bad luck at the end Ive been impressed with the two cars they've brought to the first 2 races. I went with Kahne instead of Kenseth this week:( My other drivers finished 6th,11th, and 16th.

I think Harvick would have won the race if the last caution doesn't come out, and then again if his tire doesn't go flat. Oh well, 17th is better than usual at California.

The passes we had worked as such ....Cold means there is no action on Pit Road and you can go where you like. Hot means there is action on pit road or the race has started and you can not enter while it's "hot" unless of course you have a " hot pass ". As far as garage goes that is another pass all by itself. We went up and down pit road and behind the walls and even got to climb Gordons box. I have tons of sweet pics from my son and Richard Petty to my son with tools from the Dupont box. I will post them later ...

Petty has always been a class act. My old neighbor loves to tell the story about when he was a kid. He was in the garage area, and Petty stopped talking to the people that he was talking with, and walked over to him, and asked if he would like some spark plugs out of the car. He then went over to the barrel that they had been thrown in, and dug them out and gave them to him. Small things like that leave an impression that last forever.

Wonder if Toyota is regretting that decision!!!

Well at least they have the DW rule in place now. You can only use it 6 times. I like the fact that they are talking about how good of an idea it is that they are using it now to get in the top 35 in points. Although you normally have to finish higher than 35th to be 35th in points, that seems to be the issue.

Stepping Back

HAMPTON, Ga. – No matter how much his loyal fans stomped their feet wanting him to continue racing full-time, Mark Martin on Friday made it crystal clear: once Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 here at Atlanta Motor Speedway is over, he will intentionally be MIA the next two weeks when Nextel Cup heads to Bristol and Martinsville.

Forget that he continues to hold the top spot in the Cup standings or that he could be in the best position of his career to potentially win the championship.

With a simple yet succinct announcement, Martin's mind now and forever is made up.

"I need a break," he said.

While many of his fans would have liked to see Martin run the entire season in hopes of finally taking home that elusive title, his decision was forthright: he didn't want to again go through the heartbreak of past seasons when he came close to the title but fell short each time.

Plus, he wants to spend some long overdue time with his family, which is the most important reason of all. And really, how can you fault a guy for valuing family over racing?

After a couple of years of indecisiveness, Martin committed to bowing out this season. And now he's proving that he is a man of his word.

It wasn't easy, though.

Short of kidnapping Martin, good friend and former Roush Racing teammate Matt Kenseth has done everything he can to convince him to stay behind the wheel of the No. 01 Chevrolet.

"We were hanging out at his hauler last week [in Las Vegas] and he just kept at me," Martin said. "He's relentless. I finally just had to get up and leave."

Another former teammate, Jeff Burton, also publicly said he'd bet Martin would race at Bristol next week.

Rookie Regan Smith, for whom Martin has been keeping the No. 01 seat warm, was willing to step aside to let his longtime racing hero-turned-teammate go out and give it his all. After all, at 23 years old, Smith has plenty of racing time left. At 48, meanwhile, Martin is the oldest driver in NASCAR history to hold the points lead for more than one week.

And following my column earlier this week urging fans to let Ginn Racing know how much they wanted Martin to continue on, the team's switchboard and Web site were inundated.

But in the end, Martin simply wanted something we all take for granted: time off.

Consider this: Martin has not had a long spring or summer vacation for over 20 years. While the rest of us are planning week-long family jaunts to Disney World or the beach, it's been a constant week-after-week grind for Martin and his family, going from one town to another.

Pretty much all work and little, if any, play.

Even with in-season off-weekends, he's never been able to put together more than a few days of R&R.

Now he can.

So Martin will skip Bristol and Martinsville, enjoy a third straight weekend off (NASCAR's annual Easter off-weekend), return to race at Texas and Phoenix, and then skip what has always been one of the biggest thorns in his side: Talladega.

As somewhat of a consolation to his loyal fans, Martin said he may add some races to his part-time schedule later in the season – although he may also remove others already scheduled.

But the end result will remain the same: he's still sticking to his plan to compete in somewhere between 20 and 26 races, not nearly a big enough workload to contend for the Chase.

Martin's iron man-like streak of 621 consecutive starts ends after Sunday's race. After that, there'll be an "on vacation" sign hanging on his hauler.

So what will Martin do on his time off? He'll oversee former motocross racer Ricky Carmichael in a late-model race, as well as watch young son Matt race.

Martin also talks fondly about having backyard barbeques with family and friends while watching the races on TV. Just like regular folks, like you and me.

Given how most Cup drivers' lives are nothing but NASCAR day-in and day-out – with testing, sponsor commitments, etc. – most rarely get a chance to step away from the pressure and live life out of the spotlight for a while. But Martin will start to do both once the checkered flag falls Sunday afternoon.

He's taught us a valuable lesson that there's more to life than just NASCAR. It's a lesson that some of us could learn a great deal from – no matter how much we want him to win that championship

Wow - no one said anything about the race yet?

Hats off to Jimmie and the 48 crew. What a great race - he probably could have given the 20 a bit more room b/c he would have probably overtaken him on the next lap.

Great job to JPM too! I thought he had a good chance for a top three, but he got caught bottled up in the restart and then nicked the wall.

An impressive race by Gordon finishing 12th after being a lap down and restarting 19th. He easily had a top 5 car but that issue w/ the panel sucked.

I'm excited to see the Bristol race w/ the COT this Sunday.

For those interested in the top 35 going into next week at Martinsville; Nemechek, Marlin, and Sauter are now locked in while Blaney, Schrader, and Riggs (by a hefty margin) are on the outside. Kasey Kahne is in 35th and only 34 points ahead of 36th place Ward Burton.

avsfan21

http://www.jayski.com/stats/2007/standings/5bms2007points.htm

Says Sauter is on the bubble of 35th. Kahne is 34th. So much for Jarrett using those PCs to get into the top 35 in points so he doesnt need them any more. So he probably has 2 more races to get into the top 35 in points.

Pretty good race, but great finish.

I'm not a Tony Stewart fan, but I didn't want to see him go out the way he did either. Two fuel problems in five races isn't good, so hopefully they get it squared away.

It was great race for a 24 fan. That car sucked hard in the first few hundred laps, but they kept battling back to fight for the win. Oddly enough, I'm actually kinda glad he finished 3rd, b/c i'm not sure if the 24 would have raced the 5 that cleanly. He has enough haters as it is, so i wouldn't want more people to hate him. But from the sounds of it, the team orders were pretty clear that he wasn't supposed to do anything drastic. It didn't matter at the end anyway.

Is anyone else worried about that front splitter cutting tires from here on out? It seems like a design flaw to have that splitter stick out from the front bumper like that. Granted it's probably an aero issue, but it just doesn't make sense to have that out there w/ the ability to cut a tire.

No kidding, tough break for the 29. I can't believe there was another fuel pump issue w/ that new setup. Even when he came back out, his car caught on fire thanks to that foam (at least that's what we know for now).

Damn - it sucks that the 24 couldn't get passed the 48, but I think he probably would have put someone in the wall if it wasn't a teammate. As expected, he was pretty disappointed w/ how the race turned out, but the end result is the big key though.

Hopefully they can keep this up after the break b/c they're going to need some wins for that points cushion in the chase.

I think it's more that last year it was something new to latch onto... Now that we've all seen a cup guy blow out the busch guys and Nascar let them do it, the media doesn't care. Now if Nascar started some rumbings about limiting cup guys in the busch series, it would probly get brought up again.

But Nascar won't limit them when they are barely filling some of the busch race fields (nashville being the perfect example (and yes, the companion races will always be full)).

Matt

You know what really grinds my gears? How last year the media had their panties up in a bunch because Kevin harvick was dominating the Busch Series, and not letting the BUSCH drivers get a chance, but this year when golden boy Carl Edwards is winning every weekend, there are nothing but positive remarks about ole Eddie Haskell. I hate how biased the NASCAR media is... I cant imagine the lovefest when he actually wins a Cup race.

If Waltrip is not careful, he's going to end up with more points on his North Carolina driver's license than in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.

LMFAO!!

I think it would be classic if Dale Jr landed at Hendrick Motorsports. Not that I would want him on the team. But I would have to laugh at the irony of all the earnhardt fans hating hendrick.

LOL - Comedy, but his cars have been performing really well the past few weeks. He led a lot of laps yesterday, so I'm not sure he really cares about that.

Damn - I was about 20 minutes behind watching the race on my DVR. After I saw Gordon brush the wall w/ 21 to go, I got pissed and fast forwarded the thing to catch up live to see where he finished. In the meantime, I accidentally deleted my recording, so I missed the close finish between Burton and Kenseth. Thank jeebus Burton pulled it off.

Tough break for the 20, JPM is just as aggressive as he was back in CART. He's gonna be hated and loved b/c of the way he drives.

Gordon has an 8 point lead, but he needs some wins for the chase. It was great to have racing this weekend, and I'm excited for the night race in Phoenix on Saturday. My apologies to you east coasters staying up late to finish the race.

Go 24! :)

Can't wait to hear what Stewart has to say about Montoya

On his run-in with Juan Pablo Montoya: Stewart said: "We had Juan Pablo Montoya behind us on a restart and he tried to go to the outside of me and put me in the middle of three-wide before we even get to the flag stand and I didn't really appreciate that much. So about 15 laps into the run here he comes and instead of just being courteous to him I thought, 'Well, he was going to put me in a bad spot so I'm going to put him in a bad spot.' So I raced him and raced him and raced him and that's where I made my mistake. Juan didn't get to this position and didn't get to Formula One by making bad decisions. Even as a rookie this year, and it being a different series, even as much as he's accomplished in his career, you've still got things to learn when you move to a different series. We'll talk on Friday morning before we go to practice. I know he tried to get a hold of me yesterday and I told the Godfather (Eddie Jarvis) to call Chip [Ganassi] and make sure he got a hold of Juan and said, 'Hey, we're cool. We'll talk about it this weekend.' But I don't want to do it on the phone. I want to sit down so I can explain it to him. I've got a lot of respect for Juan. I still stand behind what I said at the beginning of the year. He's got more natural ability than 99% of the guys I've ever raced with."

I wonder what Jr though about driving a real race car.

Junebug drove a car beside the #8 for the first time in his Nextel Cup career when he jumped in the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

What did the car drive like? Like it was wrecked.

Why would you get in another car?

Because they asked me. I have some friends on that team - and Ill always jump at a chance to climb into someone elses car to see what its like. They used to do that all the time back in the day. Youd have relief drivers getting into someones car almost every week, so it was kinda like a step back into NASCAR history or something. Old school! It was cool.

I thought that was funny (in bold).

UPDATE on DEI contract talks:

Teresa already has agreed to 51% of DEI for Dale Jr.? The Dale [Earnhardt] Jr. / DEI contract negotiations continue and the influence of ace negotiator Max Siegel may be bearing success. One contact told me [MaxChevy's Glen Grissom] on the down-low that the 51% (or majority ownership) that Dale Jr. requires to stay with DEI has essentially been negotiated agreed to by Teresa Earnhardt. But that she, in turn, is requesting that an independent, impartial review board be set up within DEI that would take into consideration and review any major operational changes that Dale Jr. would want to take place acting like a board of directors it seems to me [MaxChevy's Glen Grissom], with Dale Jr. basically reporting to it. So far, this has been balked at but stranger management structures have survived in the business world. All parties say they want to have the contract resolved by May, so with April half-over, its crunch time.(MaxChevy.com)(4-19-2007)
