I have a question. How can Busch, Dale Jr, Newman, and Gordon all be on pit road at the same time and when they restart Kurt, Dale Jr, and Newman are at the end of the lead lap and Gordon get the lead. How does that work. It would seem to me that they would all 4 be at the back of the lead lap and Tony still would have had the lead.

Gordong was on pit road, but the other guys had already completed their stops and were on the track. That's why those guys got dinged. It's a weird technicality w/ the scoring loop b/c I thought he was screwed too, but some times you need luck to win a race.
And for those who really think the 24 drove around w/ Dale's flag as an insult need to realize that it was as a sign of respect.
Congrats to the 24 and tying one of the greatest.

It wasnt that hard to understand really. He was on pit road when the caution came out. While Dale Jr, Newman, Kurt all pitted before the caution came out. When the caution came out the field was frozen and all Jeff had to do to stay on the lead lap was beat the leader to the end line of pit road. Since Jr, Newman and Kurt all pit before the yellow came out they were trapped a lap down. They were already a lap down when the yellow came out.

Except Gordon wasn't the leader when he pitted, which means the leader (Stewart I think) DID pass the start finish line first. Since the caution came out Jeff should have been scored a lap down or since the pits are closed the second the caution happens he should have at least been penalized for pitting while pits were closed.
At least that's what the boys on Speed said last night. Either way Jeff won and I thought him grabbing the Dale Sr flag was a classy thing to do!!

The entrance to pit road closes durring a caution, since Gordon was already past the commitment cone when the caution came out, he doesn't get penalized because he was already there. When he came out, he beat the pace car which put him as the last person on the lead lap. All of the cars in front of him hadn't pit yet (except for those now 1 lap down) so when they all went in to pit, he just drove up to the pace car and passed them all while they were pitting. When they all came back out, they came out behind Gordon, and *poof* Gordon is in the lead.

Exactly the only way for Gordon to be a lap down was if he didnt beat the pace car crossing the exit of pit road. Since the caution came out while he was already on pit road the pace car had to do a whole lap before Gordon could be a lap down. Plenty of time to finish a pit stop.

Waltrip has ideas for fairer qualifying
April 27, 2007
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) -- Michael Waltrip has failed to qualify for seven of the eight NASCAR Nextel Cup races this season, and he believes the system now being used to select the fields is somewhat flawed.
The two-time Daytona 500 winner, now also owner of a three-car, first-year team, says he has a better idea.
``They ought to draw for qualifying, like they do now,'' Waltrip said. ``Then, the top 35 go out one through 35. Then you've got this drama built. Then you let the scrubs go out. Let's see who has got what. Seven of these guys are going to make it. It would be more fair if we were right there together.''
As it stands now, the top 35 drivers in the car owner points are guaranteed a starting spot in the 43-car field, actually leaving eight spots to fill. Those positions are filled by qualifying speed, with one spot reserved for any former series champion who fails to make it on the other criteria.
Dale Jarrett, Waltrip's teammate and the 1999 champion, has used five of his six allotted provisionals already this year.
Under the current rules, everyone entered gets his qualifying position in the blind draw.
Last week at Phoenix, qualifying began in the late afternoon and the track temperature changed by more than 20 degrees as the session progressed. That gave the drivers who drew later qualifying spots a decided advantage over the early qualifiers.
Kyle Petty, another longtime stock car racer, agreed with Waltrip that a change in qualifying procedure could be good.
``On at least two occasions, he's been beat by the luck of the draw,'' Petty said. ``He's been fast enough. Other guys have been beat by the luck of the draw, too, and other guys have got in by the luck of the draw.''
Waltrip also had a suggestion for NASCAR about a change when qualifying is rained out, as it was two weeks ago at Texas. In that case, the formula for determining the field includes the top 35 in points, then former series champions, the previous year's race winners, qualifying attempts during the current season and, finally, back to the current points.
Waltrip's No. 55 Toyota went home that weekend without racing.
``Texas was a crisis,'' he said. ``Our sponsors pay as much for us to compete as sponsors pay for cars in the top 35. It was more upsetting to Domino's and NAPA that qualifying got canceled on Friday and that's it, go home. They said, `Why couldn't we have qualified on Saturday?'
``They should come up with qualifying for the whole field,'' Waltrip said. ``Say it rains on Friday. Set the top 35 by points and we're going to have a session for the other guys on Saturday. We're going to try to get qualifying in for these guys so they can go home knowing they had a chance.''
On that suggestion, Petty did not agree.
``If qualifying gets rained out, it just gets rained out, sorry,'' Petty said. ``You got beat by God then, not the luck of the draw. That's the way it's been. We play an outdoor sport and you've got to live with it. The race tracks and NASCAR and everybody, we have a schedule. You can't manipulate stuff like that.''

I actually like some of Waltrip's ideas. It's hard for a guy outside the top 35 to ever get back in without making races, and Nascar makes it hard for them to even get in.

I thought exactly the same thing. And even though avsfan is right, and Gordon would have PROBABLY passed him anyway...it's the fact that this kind of stuff keeps happening over and over, always in the favor of a Hendrick car, that gives weight to the conspiracy theorists.

I always felt a good fix to the whole yellow flag towards the end of the race, is to just not simply count the caution laps. Depending on the track; when they are a certain # of laps left and a yellow flag comes out they should not count them...
Bronko
04-29-2007, 04:07 PM
I think what a lot of people hate about it is they go to the trouble of setting up this GWC and saying we're going to see a great finish, but as soon as they go green cars back in the 30's crash and within seconds the race is over without the leader getting to turn one.

If it was rigged Martin would have won Daytona and Jr. would have won today ... I know the people that have tiny tiny brains dont get it but oh well.

maybe there is no conspiracy but you have to admit it does seem pretty odd that as soon as gordon passed jamie the caution came out yet when stewart got hit on the last lap with 5 or 6 cars wrecking behind him the caution didnt come out til after the field drove by him which made him finish 2 laps down in the 20's. i hope he says something again this week and then punches gilleland in the face. i've given up hope for the pre chase anyway. gordon and johnson can have 1st and 2nd til then. they cant be good all 36 races.

Wow - great race yesterday. Too bad the race didn't get to end under green. I'm super excited for the 24 team winning two in a row. Conspiracy theorists unite - again, common sense would be to throw a caution if the 8 car is out front and not the 24 since, the majority of fans or of Jr and it would be storybook for him to win on what would have been his dad's bday.
It sucks that Tony got wrecked. I'm not a fan of him, but I don't want to see a guy get wrecked like that at the end. I couldn't stop laughing at what he said about Gilliland lucking into his ride.

I did not catch the whole "Rosie of Nascar" comment that Gordon made,Did Stewart take offense to it?
I think Gordon said this on Friday or Saturday's edition of Nascar Now on ESPN2. The reporters questioned Gordon on what he thought about Stewart's comments. He said he liked his emotion, and jokingly said it looks like he's Nascar's version of Rosie O'Donnell. Rosie has been saying some really controversial things over the past few weeks, so it was just a comparison to what Tony has been saying. The reporters and Gordon all got a good chuckle out of it. He wasn't being a jerk or anything like that.
But I haven't heard Tony comment about it, so maybe if/when he does we'll get to hear what he thinks about it. I wouldn't be surprised to hear some good quotes come from his Sirius show on Tuesday

05-07-2007, 11:57 AM
Did they start the race from scratch yesterday? I though they ran like 12 laps on Saturday. Did they just decided to do away with them. Not like it mattered since it was all under caution, but they still did run those laps.
On a similar note they really need to quit doing the green yellow start crap. Either start the race or keep doing pace laps. Dont throw the green flag just so you can get your start time even though you arent going to start the race.
R. Giles
05-07-2007, 01:44 PM
They started the race from lap 0 and i agree about the green yellow thing its pointless.
No responses because the board was at a crawl yesterday.
Gooker1
05-07-2007, 02:33 PM
Ah - didn't know about the board.
They ran a full race yesterday b/c the laps that were ran on Saturday were all under yellow. Since they didn't have a full speed lap, then it was wiped clean and started anew yesterday.
avsfan21
05-07-2007, 02:47 PM
But they still ran laps that should have counted since they did throw the green flag. As I said that could have been avoid if they quit doing that yellow green start crap.

Ginn and Gibbs would be the frontrunners in my opinion....Chevy teams that compete.
RCR, there is way too much drama to go there.
Hendrick, they are full and have all drivers and sponsers in contracts for a few years. Mears won't leave because he is new and that is the baby in the hearts of Hendrick (the #25 team)
Ginn has deep pockets (real estate mogul) with Hendrick motors.
Joe Gibbs is against having alcohol sponsers, so that would pose somewhat of a problem with Budweiser.

http://rides.webshots.com/album/559184203tGKJuv
About the shops I still have to say that I think Hendrick still has the best one. There is just so many cars to look at in the Museum, plus you can pretty much go in all the shops, even if they kind of limit what you can see in the 24 and 48 shop. Roush is pretty good as well. Although it was a zoo there since I believe Carl Edwards was having a signing later in the day so I didnt stay long. I went to the Ganassi shop but didnt even park since it was fan day and most of the drivers were going to be at a signing as well. There was a line of probably 200+ people. There were cars everywhere so I didnt even bother. I wasnt planing to go to DEI but I saw it on my way to the Penske shop so I stopped in. The building looks nice, but I wasnt impressed with the shop. They dont let you into the actual shops of the cars and the museum looked like it had some cool cars in there but it is hard to tell since they are all in this room and you are looking through a glass door, so it is hard to get pictures of them. They should let you walk around them like at Hendrick I think. The only one I didnt take pictures of was Red Bull since there wasnt much there just a window looking into the shop, but there were cars back to the windows so it was pretty hard to see stuff.

That is the second time I have been at the race to see a driver of the 25 car get their first win. I saw Jerry Nadeau win his first race in Atlanta back in like 2000. Although I have to say that I think the best car at the time was taken out at lap 60. I mean Gordon had passed about 20 cars in 20 laps and gotten to 5th before being wrecked. I was rooting for Vickers there as well. I thought it would have been cool to see the first Toyota win, but it didnt happen. I am happy that Casey won his first race though.

It was cool to see Toyota and Vickers running up front like that. He was the class of the field before his power steering crapped out. Congrats to all those guys in the top five that have people scratching their heads. I'm glad that Mears won and that Petty was 3rd. Great stuff for that team.
Was it me or did the crowd go incredibly insane when Gordon wrecked - jerks :) I would say he had the best car in the first 60 laps. You don't go from 30th to the top 10 on nothing. I would have loved to see him out front.

Kenny Wallace 0 for 335: Three 2nd place finishes ('99 Loudon, '00 Dega, '01 Rock).
Dave Blaney 0 for 246; 3rd at Darlington in '03.
Jeff Green 0 for 245: 2nd at Loudon in '02.
Kevin Lepage 0 for 200: Two 5th place finishes ('99 Darlington, '00 Texas).
Scott Riggs 0 for 117: 2nd at Michigan in '05.
Tony Raines 0 for 95: 6th at Rockingham in '03.
Mike Bliss 0 for 81: 4th at Richmond in '04.
Martin Truex Jr. 0 for 57: 2nd at Homestead in '06.
J.J. Yeley 0 for 54: 2nd at Charlotte in '07.
Reed Sorenson 0 for 50: 4th at Charlotte in '07.
David Stremme 0 for 50: 8th at Talladega in '07.
Clint Bowyer 0 for 49: 3rd at California in '06.
Johnny Sauter 0 for 43: Two 9th place finishes ('05 & '07 Phoenx)
David Gilliland 0 for 27: 4th at Talladega in '07.
Paul Menard 0 for 17: 7th at Atlanta in '06.
David Ragan 0 for 14: 5th at Daytona in '07.
Juan Montoya 0 for 13: 5th at Atlanta in '07.
David Reutimann 0 for 9: 22nd at Charlotte in '05.
A.J. Allmendinger 0 for 5: 31st at Charlotte in '07.

Another week and another Busch/Stewart incident. Busch is parked for the rest of this race, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him parked for another one.

Nice to see another first time winner. Although I was hoping that Jimmie would have at least made a race of it.

Martin Truex Jr. 0 for 57: 2nd at Homestead in '06.
Anyone see another first time winner this season? I think Bowyer can break through, and maybe Riggs or Truex could get lucky.
So yeah I totally called this one :p.

I had to step out and missed what Busch did. I saw the replay of the wreck but what did Bush do on pit road? I started Labonte instead on Newman today:( Last week I went with Newman and got burned now I get burned again lol.

Same here. I wasnt going to start him this week either, but he was on the pole and Casey Mears was starting 41st so I switched them. Glad I did.

He drove into Stewart's car and stayed there as the crew was still working on it.

Busch got dinged 100 points and I think $100k today for that little incident.

Pocono is one track that they only need one race and it only needs to be 300 miles.

I am not saying there wasnt luck involved, there is luck in every win, but you can say that he won due to luck alone. Although I cant wait for Deogg to come in here and claim if it was anyone other than Gordon they would have waited to throw the yellow.

SIGNED!!
As happy as I am that the 24 won it w/ great strategy and timely weather, this place blows. Boring racing - dump it and add another to vegas or something.
Congrats to the crew of the 24, that weather/pit/fuel stuff is nerveracking but entertaining to watch.

Ditch both Pocono dates for Laguna Seca and Road America. Although I doubt the roads around Laguna Seca could handle a major race like cup, but it would be awesome to see all the cars going though the corkscrew.

Earnhardt to address driving future, Hendrick is the Forerunner.
June 12, 2007
AP - Jun 11, 1:54 pm EDT
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. has decided where he will drive next season, and all signs point to Hendrick Motorsports.
NASCAR's most popular driver called a Wednesday news conference at his race shop, JR Motorsports, and spokesman Mike Davis said it was to announce his plans for 2008 and beyond.
It's the same site where Junior announced May 10 he would leave DEI and enter the free-agent market.
That move ignited a whirlwind of recruiting rarely scene in NASCAR, and there's been nonstop talk regarding where Earnhardt would end up. He's made shop visits and met with various car owners while he trying to make a decision.
His sister, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, is handling his negotiations and has maintained their first choice was to keep Earnhardt in a Chevrolet. She has said the majority of her conversations have been with NASCAR's top Chevy teams.
Hendrick is the best in NASCAR right now, with 10 wins through the first 15 points races this season.
Speculation grew Monday night that Earnhardt was close to a deal with Hendrick, but officials declined comment Tuesday. Elledge did not respond to messages from The Associated Press.
Rick Hendrick currently has four drivers under contract, and told the AP last month ``there was no room at the inn'' for Earnhardt. NASCAR rules permit a car owner to field four Nextel Cup teams.
But multiple sources -- speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because Earnhardt's plans have not been announced -- said Hendrick officials have been working for nearly three weeks to figure out how to bring the star driver into the fold. One scenario could put Earnhardt into the No. 5 car that Kyle Busch currently drives.
Busch is under contract through 2008, and Hendrick has said he wanted to sign the 22-year-old driver to an extension. But there are rumblings Busch has asked to be released from his contract.
Asked if that was true, Hendrick spokesman Jesse Essex said, ``We don't comment on contractual issues.''
Busch was testing in Milwaukee on Tuesday and not available to comment.
It's still possible Earnhardt could end up at Richard Childress Racing, where his father won six of his seven championships, or Joe Gibbs Racing. But Childress is out of the country, and the assistant to Gibbs president J.D. Gibbs said Gibbs is away all week.
