figured i'd make this thread so we can have fans from both teams partcipate in a little friendly rivarly chat. I think Pens are going to have their hands full with Sens..only weakness I see with Sens is goalie situation.......should be a good one.....I want some revenge! :p

Good luck with that, there are like no Sens fans on here. The Ottawa Senators thread that exists on this message board is like a tomb with only 2 pages worth of posts and half of them are from the guy who started the thread and the other half are bumps from me, a Leafs fan! LOL

Obviously you haven't been following the Sens very much this year then because that team is a huge mess right now. They've been playing terrible hockey for 60 games now and they completely backed their way into the playoffs. They've had all kinds of chemistry issues this year and lots of soap opera nonsense to deal with (Emery, goaltending issues, coaching issues - Paddock) and now they are dealing with injuries to the 2 players who are the heart and soul of the team.
If the Penguins don't win this series in 4 or 5 games then they better give their heads a good shake!!

Not much of a chance of that either, Sens fans are pretty quiet these days and have very little faith in their team at the moment, and who could hardly blame them? Ottawa has been downright awful for the past 60 games.

yeah most likely we should win but Sens seems to find a way to always play us tough. Yes, I'm aware of their struggles the second half of the season.....they have been awful, but the playoffs is like a fresh new season.....they have too much fire power to not be competitive.....I think 6 games......won't be as easy as everything thinks!!

There are not enough miracles in this universe to get Ottawa a series win. They were a first place team that was dangerously close to joining their good friends in the blue and white on the golf course this April.
If Krusty somehow plays in this series, the Senators might be able to stretch it to 5 or maybe even 6 games, otherwise this is going to be a massacre. Gerber can't stop anything when he's under any kind of pressure, and with Emery you'd be lucky to have him show up on time or without crashing his Hummer on the 401.

Sens fan here. Until game 1 starts and Alfy is not dressed I don't believe the report about his injury. Whether Alfy and Fisher play this will be a tough series but the Sens can win it. Hossa is always a no-show in the playoffs. Crosby hasn't been the same since his injury and most likely won't be 100% until the start of next season.
Hopefully the Sens can focus and put togetehr a full 60 minutes. Too much inconsistency in their games but they've got the experience to turn it on come playoff time and hopefully they snap out of it.
I'm taking the Sens in 6.:)

I'm sure he'll be ready to play but will he be "MVP Crosby" or "high ankle sprain Crosby"? I know everyone heals at different rates but speaking fromexperience it's hard to fully recover from a high ankle sprain when you're constantly continue to play on it. I thought Crosby should have stayed out awhile longer and his play seems to indicate that.

Not in the Ottawa area, live in Winnipeg. Life long Jets fan but once they moved had to find a new team to cheer for. Since the Jets suffered so many tough defeats to the Western Canadian teams and hating the Leafs and Habs the Sens became my new team so have been a fan of theirs since '96. The Oilers have grown on me and have enjoyed watching them play over the last 6-7 years.

No Steelers arent better with Batch as QB. As far as Conklin... He played well this year and helped the Penguins to where they are today. Fluery I know is the starter but Conklin is a very good goaltender when given the chance. He showed that this year. He has more experience as well. I think that would help them in the playoffs for sure. Of course I know the Penguins wont go with Conklin but a UNH fan can only dream lol.

Montreal is going to be tough to beat. Red Wings vs Canadiens finals is not out of the realm of possibilities. As a Bruins fan I know the inevitable is coming vs the Canadiens. The question isnt who will win but how long will the series go. If the Bruins force 5 or 6 games Id be impressed.
Bruins were overachievers this year. They had so many key injuries and young guys filled in and did more then expected. Lucic especially. Bergeron being out really hurt this year. Hopefully Savard can get back for game 1 of the playoffs.
Claude Julien hopefully will be mentioned in coach of the year talks. He did a whole lot with so very little this year. I am excited to think what next year could be like when everyone comes back healthy and Tuska Raask is 1 more year closer to being the starter.

I think the Pens win it in 6.
I would love to say sweep, or 5 at the worst, but I think because a majority of the Pens do not have ENOUGH playoff experience, there will be 1/2 games where they fall behind one or two goals early, and they press too hard to get back into it. Also, if they do fall behind by a goal or two early, coach Mikey T. will not hesitate(sp?) to mix up the lines and that will hurt line chemistry.
Don't get me wrong, I live in Pittsburgh, have tix for games #1 and #2 and would love to see a sweep, I just think Coach Mike panics too soon if something is not going right. He has made some decisions that look very good, and has made others (particularly having no patience with line combinations,) that make you wonder what the H**L he is thinking.

I don't think the Penguins will have much trouble with the Sens, especially if Alfredsson doesn't play much. When you look at the Senators line up they have a lot of talent, and with all the problems they have had this year they are good enough that they can turn it around at any time and dominate, however I don't think that's going to happen. MAF has played really well since returning from his injury too. Maybe it's the pads! er, maybe not.
I like the Penguins in 5.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to follow the Coyotes?
I see that a lot around here. I live just outside Winnipeg, and have been here for 5 years. I notice that almost no one roots for the Coyotes. All of my buddies are either Oilers, Canucks, or Leafs fans. There are quite a few Habs fans too but I don't know those people, but I see the hats and jackets.
I think Edmonton is the most popular team in Manitoba.
Now, to make this relevant for the thread, in the 3 minutes since I last posted, I still think the Penguins will win this series.

I don't think anyone can count out the X Factor with the Sens... going all the way to the cup finals is a major accomplishment and the Sens know what it takes to get there again. As bad as they've been, the Sens are still a dangerous team... and odds are they'll be that much more dangerous hanging all the predictions on their locker room bulletin board that say they don't stand a chance against the Penguins.
Personally, I think the Penguins will walk away with it, but I don't think anyone should be surprised if Ottawa pulls off an upset.

I think people are justified in writing them off. This team has been crashing and burning for 60 games now, that's a long stretch and a very telling indicator. Even worse, down the stretch run the last 10 games or so, the team knew they had to pick it up and get serious and they still could not deliver and they literally backed their way into the playoffs.
I think those are some pretty telling signs for writing a team off.

But so easily in 4/5 games? I dont think so. I believe the mentality that this is a new season and a perfect opportunity to turn things around. If everyone steps up to the level they are capable of, the Sens have a good chance at upsetting the Penguins in the first round.
Maybe flying under the radar and having 0 expectations is just what the team needs to string together some wins?

I seriously doubt if Sundin went down bleeding on the ice our crowds would stand up, cheer and laugh hysterically...

I totally agree with you. I've just come to accept that every team has moronic fans who will yell out or cheer in a classless fashion. It is what it is. Not much you can do about it other than just shake your head and know that you are a better person than them and leave it at that.
I just hate that Leafs fans more than any other team get pegged for this, when people just don't realize that it goes on with every team's fans.

Hossa is always a no-show in the playoffs.
I always thought that was the case too (which was one of the reasons I wasn't as jazzed about the move as some), but after reading a stat in a local paper, I set out to www.hockeydb.com (http://www.hockeydb.com/) to verify...
Based on the numbers there, Marian Hossa has 648 points in 701 regular season games, a points-per-game average of .924. In the playoffs, he put up 35 points in 55 games. That comes out to .636 points per game. In the regular season, he has That's a .288 drop from regular season to playoffs.
As a comparison, Mario Lemieux has 1723 points in 915 regular season games for an average PPG of 1.883. In the playoffs, he put up 172 points in 107 games, a PPG average of 1.607. The drop off for him is .276.
Am I to believe that a .012 difference is that big of a difference?
I agree with you, it's not really a classy thing to do, but it is what it is, every team has fans like that, including the Sens.

The very fact that Ottawa has to "upset" the Penguins is exactly why they won't win this series. Ottawa beating anyone in the East shouldn't be an "upset" because on paper they're arguably the best in the East and one of the top five teams in the NHL. They just haven't seemed very interested in winning since they started 15-2-0.

while im aware i can easily look on the pens website for the pricing info, im just looking for your opinions on how much your playoff tix cost vs quality of seating(in pittsburgh or any other NHL arena for that matter)? Scotiabank Place here in ottawa is a cool venue, except it's out in the middle of nowhere and entering/leaving parking is a nightmare. the venue itself is just a big circle around the ice with three seating levels and two concourses. ive been to pittsburgh a couple times now and realize that mellon arena is divided VERY different than every other arena ive ever seen. SBP has no bad seats tho, which is nice. nothing in anyways way, you can sit back in your seat and see the entire rink fine, etc. but the nosebleeds do get pretty high up, altho not as bad as the bell centre.. that place is definatly one of a kind.
anyways, as for pricing the absolute cheapest we have here in ottawa is 65.00 + service fees = 78.00 a pop and that covers the full upper ring around the upper bowl. rows m thru t. (there is standing room for 45.00 + fees = 58.00) anyways, after the 65.00 tix it jumps to 85.00 + fees for middle ring of upper bowl e thru l and 110.00 for lower ring of the upper bowl rows a-d... so the "good" nosebleeds run you about 125.00 each. which is ridiculous. for the rest of the rink, the prices are 155 + fees for the entire middle, which is prolly my favorite spot to sit. it's a great view slighly elevated above the glass, but i refuse to pay 170.00 a ticket bowl and 190 + fees for the lower bowl is totally out of the question
anyways, ticket pricing is getting a wee bit out of hand since last years playoffs. luckily during the reg season i get discounts on about 50-60% of the home games because we get a group rate at work to alot of games.. not huge savings, but some games you can get a great set in the lower bowl for about 100.00 which is nice for a "treat yourself night". sadly the group rate doesnt apply to playoffs...
how are your ticket pricing?

i agree, but i'd like to make an addition and include the entire ottawa senators media. this goes to journalists don brennan, chris stevenson, and bruce garrioch of the sun and commentators gord wilson and dean brown. this isnt the first time one of them have made boneheaded comments like that... i believe the sens have the worst media surrounding them in the league, and possibly the most negative critical fans in teh league. i dont think i've ever seen a more biased group of journalists anywhere else. at least gary galley calls it the way he sees it.. which is of course the reason why most sens fan hate him. i also love how the fans here will tear a player a new one if he screws up. i dont know how many times last year i heard the "trade alfie" argument after a lose starting three years ago.. if they dont want him here, the pens will certainly take him.
after the game tonight go to the team 1200 online and stream there radio feed. it's a local sports radio station here in ottawa. trust me, it'll entertain you all night, especially when the pens take it to the sens.. the call ins are the best part..

When 3 of your top forwards are out of the line-up and coming into the playoffs have lost the majority of games... I consider them underdogs and beating the Pens should be an upset.

The point I was trying to make is that Ottawa should have the number two seed in the east, not the seventh, but because of their lackluster play the last ... I dunno 60, 65 games dropped them to seventh and nearly cost them a trip to the post season.

While I agree, it's hard to "blow it up" when you've just commited to Heatley, Fisher, Emery, Volchenkov, Phillips & Spezza long-term. The core of what you see tonight is the core you've comitted to.

True, but the Sens are alot closer to winning the Cup than the Leafs are. Leafs are probably one of the worst teams in the league when you look at prospects and trade bait. If the Sens do decide to blow things up they will get quality in return. Leafs are in shambles with poor prospects and a bunch of their players tied up in no trade clauses.

Other than Emery most every team in the league would jump on a chance to acquire any of the other players. Plenty of teams with cap space that would take those guys. I'd rather have them stay on the Sens but if it helps the team out by trading one or two of them then so be it.

It's just absolutely ridiculous to suggest that the same roster (for the vast majority - all the major pieces anyways) that went all the way to the Cup Finals last year is now suddenly a roster which needs to be blown up because it's just not going to work??? Come on, that's ridiculous. That is NOT the solution. This roster has proven it can go far and have a chance, why blow it up?? That's insane. Make the right coaching changes, get the right people in to put this roster together properly and make it gel.
Subtle changes are needed, but come on, blow it up and start over from scratch?? Stupid.
My point is, Ottawa fans are for the most part fairweather and foolish.

But in todays NHL when you say blow it up you actually are talking about subtle changes. You can't get rid of $30-40mil in salaries in one season. A goalie and a top D is the changes I would make.

Exactly. But it should be noted that this isn't just a team that has been struggling only for the playoffs due to missing some key players due to injury.
We're talking about a team that has been performing at this poor level for 60 games now and the majority of those games Alfredsson and Fisher were in the lineup.
You hit the nail on the head there though with the real issue. It's a poisoned environment, poisoned mostly by Paddock being a horrbile choice for head coach and Emery and his antics and Paddock and Murray not being able to difuse the problem.

Well then most of the fans calling in to that radio show do not understand how the NHL works cause trading away big salaries is not easy and you won't get much better quality in return.
The forwards are fine. The only change I would make up front would be to add a grinder. Defense and goaltending has been inconsistent all season. Hopefully Brian Lee turns out to be a top prospect and is with the club all season next year. Make a choice on goaltender and get rid of the other one, even if you have to be a majority of the salary. If Emery is such a cancer trade him or send him to the AHL.

Very true, he spends far too much energy and focus constantly *****ing and whining at the refs about every little missed call or bad call. It's gotta be a huge distraction to the players and not the proper means of channeling the players energy and focus.

Everyone was after Muckler's head last year, but the team Mucks put together went to the Finals. The fans got their wish, Mucks was shown the door, and look what Murray has done since without Muckler. It's clear to me that Murray should go - both as coach & GM. He's watched this team completely self-destruct, assigned a coach that lost the players' respect in the locker room, and has done very little in helping this team take that final step. They've actually taken a step or two BACK under his tenure as GM.

Very true in some ways but you could also spin doctor your argument to also point out how Brian Murray was the genius behind building the Anaheim Ducks team that Brian Burke took over for and went on to win the Cup last year. Even Burke himself went on record to give Murray credit for the foundation that he built there before Burke took over. So I think Murray has some merit as a GM.
But I do agree that he has made some serious mistakes as GM this year, most notably his decison to hire Paddock as head coach and his inability to difuse Paddock's poor treatment of the goaltending situation and player discipline situation and letting it go on for far too long. I don't understand how Emery was able to get away with his antics and never got suspended or fined by the team. The worst discipline he got was being sent home from practice which for a slacker like him is actually a gift.

And I could spin doctor your argument & say that Burke was the one that secured the final pieces to put them over, and that under Murray's tenure, he only brought them CLOSE, as the Ducks lost to NJ in the Finals in 2003. It was Burke who brought in Pronger, Niedermayer & Selanne - 3 HUGE pieces that won them the Cup.
Just like Stillman, Lapointe & Commodore are the huge pieces that Murray brought in for Ottawa. :p;)

What's the difference?? Since coming back into the league the Sens have done exactly the same as the Leafs have done - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Sorry my friend, but winning the Stanley Cup is all that matters.
bingo
True, but the Sens are alot closer to winning the Cup than the Leafs are. Leafs are probably one of the worst teams in the league when you look at prospects and trade bait. If the Sens do decide to blow things up they will get quality in return. Leafs are in shambles with poor prospects and a bunch of their players tied up in no trade clauses.
My point is, Ottawa fans are for the most part fairweather and foolish
double bingo.
It is pretty well established that "Sens Army" is a bandwagon following. The last couple of years have been very kind to the Senators and their fans, so their true fandom hasn't been tested. Retooling? don't think so. You're committed to your guys and you have to ride them out.

Very true. But I think Alfie proved that he can take a check on that hit. Mark Bell absolutely SMOKED him with that open ice hit and then when Alfie went down his head hit the ice really hard as well. He should have be knocked out unconscious after that hit but he actually got up on his own 2 feet eventually and went to the bench and refused to go to the locker room and tried to go out for one more shift before packing it in. That's pretty tough in my books.

This has been a 60+ game downward spiral for the Sens. Their gas tank has been running on empty for a long time now.
They shouldn't have made the playoffs, they completely backed their way in, the league would have been better served with a team like Buffalo making the playoffs instead.

Not sure what you mean. Washington didn't back their way into that #3 seed. They worked their butts off at the end of the season and rode a 9-1 record in their last 10 games to earn that division title and a playoff spot.
I'd hardly call that worse than the Senators who backed their way into the playoffs by playing sub .500 hockey for the last 60 games of the season after starting the season 16-3-1.
Perhaps you should just stick to commenting on baseball cause clearly your hockey knowledge needs some fine tuning!! :p
