Generally, he knows his role and is great at getting under the skin of his opponents. He too often steps over the line, and although apparently within the rules, just didn't sit well with me.

This is what the game of hockey is all about. Playing with an edge and doing whatever it takes to win so long as you can get away with it. There are no brownie points for playing like a true gentleman, that is not the game of hockey. Unless your only goal is to win the Lady Byng Trophy every year.
He may be an ass and it may be hard to like him or respect him, but you kind of have to admire his willingness to do whatever it takes to win. And you can not deny his passion and his heart. Teams like the Senators and the Sharks could use an Avery.
I hate him but I respect him.

I was shocked to see Avery pulling that stunt. While he needs to play aggressive I think that crossed the line of being honorable. If you see the replay, you will see Drury skate into him to tell him something and sort of try to push him around to face the play. The league will quickly begin calling that unsportsmanlike. I need to give Marty some props for keeping his cool and not costing his team by drilling Avery upside the head.
What is your take on Scotty Hartnell? He's pretty brutal to goalies and took out Huet yesterday and punched him in the back of the head. Is Hartnell the leagues next Avery?

I watched it several different times. If he would have kept his stick down and his arms down, I think it would have been okay. But, with the stick up, it could be construed as enticing another player to committ a penalty, which is a misconduct.
CBC's Ron Maclean spoke of it last night and read the NHL rule book. When bozo had his stick and hands up, I'd say they're right, its worth a unsportsmanlike misconduct as he was trying to entice Brodeur.
But, if he keeps his hands down and his mouth shut? Not so sure. Plus, we know he cant keep his mouth shut.
3 things
1) What did his teammate say to him when he was doing that to Brodeur? One of his own players skated over to him and said something. Anyone know what it was?
2) Agreed, if you're the most hated guy in the league, you shouldn't take anything to chance, including the assumption that one of your own teammates won't have a problem with driving the rubber into the back of your noggin, lol.
3) And of serious concern, taking one in the back of the neck could be dangerous too. There was an amateur player up here in Alberta that was killed that way. Went down to block a shot which hit him in the back of the neck. I think it hit an artery or something and that was it, poor kid died.

Obviously I was being sarcastic to a degree. That's why I said "pretty much everyone". I most definitely was going for some humour in that statement, try not to get too upset about it. You HAVE to expect a sarcastic statement like that when you consider how much goonery the Flyers have dished out this year.
But hey, you're right, the Flyers players have been "as clean as apple pie" this year. I was just making the whole thing up!

I think Hartnell should have been drilled in the head by the Caps defensemen after that flop on top of Huet with the punch/rake to the back of the head. Maybe that would have stopped the 5-on-5 master of ceremonies, Briere, from slew footing Huet later in the game.

While what Avery did might not be covered in the rulebook, it should have been an unsportsmanlike call or perhaps goaltender interference. Agree or disagree, it was disgraceful to say the least. Mark Recchi said that in no way shape or form would he ever consider doing anything similar, and I'm sure most guys in the league as well as even some of Avery's teammates thought it was bushleague.
I agree with the sentiment that if Jersey had a Scott Stevens in the lineup it wouldn't happen again.
ShakesO
04-14-2008, 09:42 AM
I think you get to get away with that once. I don't find it any different than the football or basketball players waving their arms to distract a kicker/shooter. The difference I suppose is Avery was about a foot away from Brodeur.
Do I think it's classless? No, not really... I'm not sure I agreed with how high up his stick was - that's sort've dangerous.
But it's not my call. If all the players in the league think it's a horsesh0t play, then they're allowed to call a penatly. It didn't look like Drury was impressed, nor the ref, and I'm thinking Brodeur didn't like it either ;)
That said, if you're facing the goalie he can't hack you in the back of the ankles for being in his crease, a la Ed Belfour. So maybe Avery has some survival skills going there lmao. Brodeur probably could've got a free shot in there.
ps. you're right, all you need is a Stevens or a Phaneuf to drill you and that will keep a player from doing it again.

Avery has 3 goals in 3 games, and has the Devils goaltender, and entire roster trying to get at him.
Did his "screen" of Broduer go over the line? Technically, no.
Honorably, maybe?
But then what of Zach Parise's running, from behind no less, of Marc Staal as time ran out during Game 2?
This is the playoffs. That is hockey.
And also has anyone noticed that the refereeing has been horrible? Both ways?

NHL Rulebook Definition (CBC's Ron Mclean's justification for a 10 minute unsportsmanlike misconduct penalty)
"A misconduct penalty shall be imposed on any player who persists in any course of conduct (including threatening or abusive language or gestures or similar actions) designed to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty."
So, I think Avery's persistance and the stick being up (perceived as threatening) would meet this criteria. However, if his stick is down, his hands are down, I don't know.
One thought I had that could be argued is that if Avery's hands are down, but he's doing the same thing, Brodeur may be even more enticed to give him a shot in the chops, because Avery wouldn't be able and quick to defend himself with his hands. Then would this be interpreted is inciting a penalty by an opponent ? I'd say yes.
A bit of a grey area, but I wouldn't be surprised if the league says knock it off ASAP.

And we have the "Sean Avery Rule"
-- MEDIA ADVISORY --
INTERPRETATION OF RULE 75 – UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT
NEW YORK/TORONTO (April 14, 2008) -- National Hockey League Senior
Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell
today issued the following advisory on the interpretation of Rule 75 -
Unsportsmanlike Conduct: "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule
75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation
when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender
and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the
goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or
distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make
a play."

It does seem odd that Avery never seems to get a taste of his own medicine or pay for his actions on the ice. He can run away from fight challenges all he wants, but eventually you'd think somebody would be able to smoke him with a bone crushing hit or even a dirty hit somewhere along the line. It's amazing that nobody ever seems to be able to get at thim. I liken him to the Road Runner. Beep Beep!
Avery is cut from the same cloth as Darcy Tucker, but even Tucker took plenty of licks along the way and gets severely punished with big hits lots of times.
How Avery seems to get away with everything without paying a price is beyond my understanding......

Interesting that the rules had to be refined due to what he did.
When I saw him doing that I got a pretty good laugh out of it. I see no problem with it but then again I'm a Rangers fan. But in all honesty it does come off being unsportsmanlike and I'm surprised that no one else has done this. Avery isn't the smartest guy in the world but he is certainly creative.

You know what gets me upset is how EVERYONE gets on this guys back,I am sorry I knew Avery from the LA days and knew what the Rangers where getting yes he is a pain in the ass BUT HE CAN PLAY AND SCORE!! An the sin of this BS he gets is that EVERY TEAM IN THE NHL will LOVE to have this guy on there team(Yes even you Islander,Devil and Philly Fans!!)
What he did last night was GREAT,even marty said it was a smart play by him and that NO ONE every did that. And now I ask you this....if Sid the Kid did that will the NHL make this rule change and Fans be on his back...I think NOT. Because it's Avery THE NHL PEST and NOT Marketable so everyone gets on his case and the NHL does this rule change.
I hope the rangers win the cup and Avery gets the MVP..that will shutup everyone...well maybe
Good luck to all your teams that made the playoffs.

its simple. Avery is a good player who knows his role well. To the play in question, there is no place for that stuff in the game of hockey. I am sure there will be penalties called, now that the league has decided to enforce a penalty that has been on the books for ever.
