Lidstrom, Phaneuf and Chara.

I thought Campbell might make it in there instead of Chara.

Lidstrom is a no-brainer. I always take him first or second in my hockey pools. Amazing point producer and +/- guy. Very durable and consistent. As long as he's playing no one else stands a chance.

I understand Lidstrom has been ridiculous all season. Dion is next in line to win a lot.

Technically it is for best defenseman, but it really goes to the best offensive defenceman.

Nick Lidstrom -- hands down.

Amazingly efficient, smooth and skilled. Durable, strong fundamentals and above all, smart. Intelligence is often underrated in sports, and Nick is a very savvy player. He rarely gets caught out of position, and he just consistently executes that which should be executed, along with the spectacular plays thrown in for good measure too.

You may call his long goal against Ellis lucky, and luck was certainly with him on it, but knowing him, he probably noticed something about the condition of the ice during warmups or as the game wore on, and decided to try it accordingly. I am assuming it was likely a hot day in Nashville on Sunday, and between that and all the body heat generated by cheering fans, it likely affected the ice. Just a theory.

Glad to see him getting the recognition he deserves, including his 2nd figure!

Lidstrom was runner up 3 years in a row and probably got shafted a couple of those years. He'll win it every year until he retires if he keeps putting up the numbers he does. Dion's time will come but it ain't this year.

I believe it was actually mainly luck and part planning. I read somewhere that he said he took a bit off the shot because he wanted to give it a little bounce before it hit the net. He just happened to have the best possible outcome with his little plan.

I said Phaneuf. Lidstrom is great, but I think Dion does as much if not more for his team. You could argue this all day long, but I think Nick walks with the hardware at the end of the day.

I picked Lidstrom. I think Zubov could've had a chance provided he stayed healthy. There is no way Chara even belongs in this category.

Lidstrom got it this year, the guys in his own level right now and it amazing he can still do it being an oldster at 37. Phanuef can win it maybe not this year but next.

I'm a little bit surprised to see Chara there. I thought Gonchar deserved a mention...

Lidstrom is almost in a class of his own. When you consider the amount of ice time he's logged over the past (he plays an average of 80 games per year), his point production, his +/-, and the most impressive of all, his PIM.

To be that effective & take only 40 mins of penalties over an entire season playing defence is INSANE.

haha Ant i really do like chara, i was the B's in NHL vs a lot of my teammates this year and every time he had the puck i was like chara and started laughing. plus i saw an interview with Chara and a comedian fro Canada when was with the sens and the guys was like " so zedeno how many babies do you eat before a game?" he was joking around about his size and i dont think chara understood the guestionand said 3 haha.

Dieon Phanuf (sp) would be my second.

and I'm not saying that because it's a homer pick...he was the clear front runner until he went down. Good news is he's been upgraded to day to day and skated with the team today :D

Clear front runner? If Lidstrom is in the league, it's a pretty good bet that he's the clear front runner....every year.

I think we'll all agree, Steve Yzerman is a pretty good player right? He called Lidstrom the best player he's ever SEEN.

What the hell does that have to do with anything? Just because a "good" player is in the league doesn't mean jack. See: Sergei Fedorov. This isn't a debate about Lidstrom being good or not, it was a statement of fact that until he got injured, Zubov was the clear front runner for the Norris on paper.
