So, I saw the picture of the Warren Moon yesterday on the cardback. What's with that? No more clamshells? Not a fan.
Is this the way it's going to be for all series from now on? Is there a thread addressing this somewhere?

Yep, get used to it. It's here to stay for 2 series until they switch it again.

Well, I was in this cave called "Pokerstars" whenever I had some free net time on my hands there for a while. Must have all gone down then.
What I don't understand is that I thought they went with this smaller streamlined clamshell packaging to take up less space on the pegs. And now this carded Moon seems simply huge, and a massive step backward from that direction.
What is the company reasoning behind it? Is cardboard cheaper than a full clamshell plastic bubble nowadays? Greener for the environment? What?

I don't think we got an official excuse but it's definantly a cost saving move.

Ben said the retailers really pressured them into it.

So the retailers pressured them into making something that takes up more space on shelves, and is easier to open in the store and shoplift? I don't get it.

Exactly, it makes no sense. They said retailers pressured them not to have figures that you had to assemble yourself. So all the new figures will not require any assembly and will be able to fit in the package. Either way it makes no sense. Especially since the last switch was made to take up less space on the pegs yet this new packaging is bigger than it's ever been.

I guess if they were getting a lot of returns of NBA players that Andy Matz couldn't snap the legs into, there is a point there.
Geeze how huge are the NBA bubbles going to be?

Nah..I'm not buying that for a second. I mostly only collect football and b-ball figs and all the recent b-ball figs have been very easy to assemble. This is strickly a cost cutting move and they're trying to make us believe otherwise. Same as when they made the last switch they tried to make us believe it was to save space on the pegs...so now they go and make packages bigger than ever:rolleyes:. I think it's pretty obvious.

No, the real reason retailers are forcing them to switch is because the government is putting pressure on them to go green, and to start converting all their products and others that they carry to "green" packaging. There is no reason for the cardboard on the top, it would be ok to have the back of the package cardboard(annoying but atleast it's semi protected and not sticking out) which would allow it more space and easier to protect, but the loose cardboard on top has no use other than to be annoying and ugly.

Bottom line, this move was all about money. Just as the last packaging move was about money.
First packaging change was apparently because they had to reduce the packaging size because retailers were asking for smaller packaging to fit on the pegs and take up less retail space. So you suddenly no longer get a goalie net or a bigger goalie base. This saves TMP money so they don't have to raise the price of SPs which Todd really wants to avoid. Bottom line is they made the packaging smaller to save money on the cost of plastic and by reducing the amount of plastic needed for the clamshell and also save money on the hockey nets and larger bases. The cost of plastic and petroleum products is skyrocketing, so the less plastic they have to produce the better it is for them financially.
Now they are changing the packaging yet again. They say the reason is so they can showcase the figures better in the clamshell fully assembled and it also allows for more dynamic poses. This is most definitely true, but the real main reason they did this was again to save money on the fact that petroleum and plastic costs continue to become out of control, so adding a cardboard backing saves them money and prevents them from needing to raise the cost of SPs which Todd is religious about avoiding.
In short, both these packaging changes in the last year were all about the issue of petroleum and plastic costs and Todd wanting to avoid having to raise the cost of SPs to the consumer.

I don't understand the hate for the package. As long as TMP keeps pumping out good product with good likenesses and keeps them affordable, I could care less if they came in a garbage can.

What exactly about it is difficult to understand? There are a lot of people who prefer to keep their figures sealed in package to display. A majority of them hate the change, either because they hate the look of the packaging, they are worried it will be next to impossible to find any MOC figures anymore, or both.
I keep most of my figures in package but after initially not liking the switch, I have come to terms with it and don't really care that much now. I do agree to an extent with those who have said that the packaging, at least for the Legends 4 figures we've seen so far, makes the whole thing look rather generic, but I'll deal with it. Even though I am a MOC'er for the most part, I am not one of those super anal retentive people who scour pegs at stores for the most mint figure to buy. As long as there isn't some real noticeable blemish, I am cool.

LOL or at the very least take off that visor that isn't even supposed to be there in the first place! Think of the panic attack that must have taken place at the TMP office when they saw the prototype with the visor on it and the thought of all the money they'd be wasteing on that expensive plastic for an accessory that shouldn't have even been there in the first place! :D
Mark assures us though that the mistake was caught in time..........
