Gas prices are hitting my wallet bad, especially driving a GMC Yukon Denali. I did some research and narrowed it down to a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic?
Which way should I go?

We have a Toyota Matrix and love it.

I think that either way you go will be a pretty good choice.
Both manufacturers are high quality and also great service after the sale.

My though is that it comes down to personal preference, but also look at the resale values to see how they hold their value.

I have a Ford Taurus with the 3.0 24 valve engine. They are inexpensive and great on gas and you'll love the power and features. Make sure it is a 24 valve Duratec though because the regular ones had trans and water pump problems. My 3.0 24 valve has 200 HP and on the trip to KY and back my highway gas mileage was 32 mpg. I really enjoy the car. The biggest complaint i would have is the ride is a little stiff but it has a lot of miles and the struts may just be getting worn.

My younger brother was in a similar situation...only thing was his Silverado is paid off for.

I ask him why did he want to buy a new car? He replied with, "to save money". I replied back with 'but you forgot your new car payment and full coverage insurance per month, so add another $400 to your monthly gas bill....what is your total now?' He said, '$700'. I asked him, 'what is your current gas bill?' He said 'about $300-$350 per month.' I finally said, 'and where would you be saving money?

just my thoughts.......either way, it is your money...so go with you feel comfortable with.

RoeThat is the exact decision we made and luckily did so before i got laid off. Both our cars are paid off. We are able to avoid a car payment and save a ton on insurance. I'm glad i didn't jump into another car loan. I was inches away fron getting a 2000+ Trans Am or even thinking about buying an 2005+ Mustang GT. Man, am I glad I didn't get around to it before I got laid off. Whew!

I just bought a 2008 civic exl. Leather interior totally loaded and it is awesome! I do a ton of driving and it is super comfy, The only downfall to it is the front is angled kind of weird and it takes a beating with stone chips on the hi-way. But there is ways to protect it!! I would have got the Civic Si but being in sales it is hard to write an order, talk on the phone and shift! But the exl is the next best thing! I would highly recommend the civic! Oh yea I get a little over 700kms on a tank of gas (Hi-way) which cost about $48.00 at $1.27 a litre!

Me and my wife just test drove all 3 of these cars and we went with the 3. It's what she wanted all along, it's a fun little sporty car.

The civic is the better value of the two you are talking about though. In the toyota we were getting no options for the same price as all the options in a civic.

But, i'd still go with the 3 :) It's a great little car.

New or used?

Corolla. I'm a Toyota sucker and besides, theft rate is rather high for a Civic. Our first car jacking occured with our first Honda.

^^very bad move IMO!^^

I would think aside from the options you want, they are the same. Can't go wrong with either. both are top of the line and have a good resale value.

More of what looks better to you.

Ford has now caught up with Toyota and has and equal quality rating but both are still a bit behind Honda. Just do a google search and you'll see.

I'm a foreign car (maker) snob. I find the general reliability of the traditional American made cars to be average to poor. Their resale value is typically pretty bad as well.

what is the difference in price? make sure you buy gently used - you'll save a chunk of money off the start. invest the difference in a retirement account. that's the way to go :)

Save jobs in America, whatever you buy make sure it is Made in the USA

Corolla's are made in both Canada and the USA
If you are in Texas I imagine you will get the Corolla made in California
The Matrix is only made in Canada, but the cheaper Pontiac is made in the Toyota plant with the Corolla's in California
Civic's are made in Canada, not sure if they have a plant in the USA
either way you will be supporting the North American economy as parts for both of these vehicles are made in both countries

I test drove all 3 about a year ago when I bought a new car.

I really liked some of the civic's features, like the digital spedometer, but hated others, like the design of the body. Plus in BC, the insurance rates for the civic are astronomical. I didn't really like the Corolla that much.

The 3 had a good balance of features and price, so that's why I went with it.

I was talking for people who work on them not, a google search that give ratings...my sister and her husband own a automotive repair shop...he was a huge ford guy, now lives and dies by Toyota & Honda. I'll believe it when I see that a US base car has caught up to the Japanese cars...even though most are built here now.

Other car is a CRV and I thought the gas mileage was good in that thing.....

Got a good laugh at this one...All my friends had to have their VW's straight outta college, they have come to find that there are better cars out there. For some reason VW's & college graduates go hand in hand!

I've had an 07 Civic for the better part of a year and really like it. I tested both the Civic and the Corolla (and was VERY tempted by the Mazda 3). I like the ride on the Corolla better but HATED the external appearance and much of the interior layout. (I found out that the Corolla was due for a redesign, but when they saw what they were up against in the Civic and Mazda 3 designs, they apparnetly went back to the drawing board). With all other factors being relatively the same, the only way I was going to get the Corolla at the time was to get it with the Sport package, which pumped up the price. I preferred the acceleration and handling on the Civic, and I LOVE the placement of the digital speedometer in the Civic. So nice to be able to quickly check down and right back to the road. Almost like not having to look away from the road at all. That was honestly a big selling point for me. The other difference I noticed was what seemed to be a somewhat larger blindspot in the right rear and left rear areas when driving the Corolla. Could have been just me, but it seemed that there was a larger area where it was hard to see cars in those areas.

The only downside I've found with the Civic is the ease of getting in and out. The seats are contoured and relatively low (especially if you're used to an SUV), so there's no "sliding" out. Oh, and another downside is the use of cloth in a couple places that are prone to getting dirty (the handle to close the door, the armrest between the front seats, etc). Then there was the recent recall on a few models (for which I have to schedule an appointment to get something taken care of).

It appears that Honda quality/reliability has slipped a bit in recent years, such that Toyota makes a slightly better product in that arena. On the other hand, Honda has really made some decent advances in the appearance of their vehicles (inside and out), while Toyota has seriously lagged behind, at least on the Corolla.

So, I think you'll win with either version. And with the price of gas being what it is, if I had it to do over again, I'd probably go with a hybrid............but the wheels on the Civic hybrid are intensely ugly!!!!! Takes the car from fairly cool looking to geekville in a heartbeat! :D
