So I was wondering today...
who would be the most evil, notorious, gut wrenching marvel villain (that is, in the entire marvel universe)...
I have a very limited knowledge of the comics, but I am interested to know what you guys think?

his power doesnt make him more or less evil. Blackheart is less powerful but more evil, darker ambitions more lust for power and suffering. Dr. Doom isn't evil he's just trying to do whats right by his people.

The most evil?
Probably Loki. The other Marvel villains all have an angle. Loki is just evil for the sake of being evil and if Thor and Odin happen to catch it in the end, then so be it. But, it's not like Odin didn't bring it on himself.
The other one would be Annilus. He wants to destroy the whole friggin universe.....you know, just cuz.
The other one would be Thanos. His girlfriend is Death, how much more evil can you get?

Doom is most evil, because Doom has pissed off the Devil himself and lived to tell the tale, and is still evil no matter what. The MA had to pull their biggest trick out of their bag to finally take him down, an entire team of Big-Shots, a god even, and they had to rely on their last resort, Sentry.
Kang is also pretty evil, his rise to power involved some pretty cruel stuff, and he's not exactly the most polite of villains either, threatening to blow a hole in a pregnant women's stomach to get what he wants.
Mephisto, I would say "duh" but come on, his name is evil alone. HIs name is so evil it makes babies cry.

Eating something to live isn't evil, it's survival.
For just plain evil I'd say IronMan, due to the way he screwed over all his so-called friends and other heroes with the whole registration thing.

dood, its scarlet witch. she nearly took out an entire species. :D
Y'know... you have a point there. I don't know if I'd say she's the most evil, but killing/shattering the lives of countless innocent people by stripping them of their mutations just 'cause she had "daddy issues" is pretty heinous. Not to mention that after the events of M-Day, other enterprising individuals sought to capitalize on the weakened state of the mutant population and finish off what few remained. Yeah, Wanda set in motion a nice torrent of pain, devastation, and death.
For my money though, I'd have to agree with Holeman about Loki.

Only because he seeks to destroy everything practically everyone in Marvel holds dear.
It's nothing personal. There's no real malice in it, it's just what he is.
In order to be evil, there has to be evil intent. Besides, he's beyond our conceptions of these ideas, so no, he's not a villain, anymore than a hurricane or a tornado or a comet is a villain. He just is.

Barracuda was a bit too much of a parody to be taken seriously though, don't you think?
I mean honestly, even there at the end when he was going to shoot Frank's baby girl, I didn't take him seriously, he was like a bad Wayans movie joke and quite frankly, I'm happy to be rid of him. It was almost as if for a while Ennis was lapsing back into the jokey/slapstick tone the first series he did had.

One has to read through the definition of evil to answer this questions correctly. Most of the characters mentioned have motives/goals that have them viewed as evil, such as Dr Doom, Apocalypse, Galactus, even Thanos. Thanos is a stretch because he worships Death and wants everyone to die, but not just because he's nasty. He's just trying to impress Death.
Shuma Gorath is pretty freaking evil, even trumping Mephisto when it comes to killing people. Shuma actually demanded sacrifices for millions of years and enjoyed eating up planets just to piss people off. Mephisto is followed by a close second. However Blackheart is the exact opposite of evil, he wants to make a 'kinder, gentler' Hell and off his father because he's pissed about being made from man's fears and evils. Kinda like a rebellious son that has seen the light.

I nominate Joe Quesada
Anybody ever heard of character called "Dyspare" (I think that was the spelling - some variation of hte word "despair" anyway).
I think it was an issue of Marvel Team-Up in which Cyclops was away from the X-Men for some reasons and he ran into this "Dyspare" character who just about convinced Cyke to kill himself until Swamp Thing intervened.
That character was absolute, pure evil. The sole purpose of his existence and all of his satisfaction came from tormenting people and destroying their lives. Regardless of this or that power or kill count, by degrees of "evil", it doesn't get much more malevolent than that.

A month is too small a difference to say who ripped off who. But The Heap (http://www.toonopedia.com/heap.htm) was a man who turned into a vegetable-looking swamp monster back in 1942, 29 years before either of these two. And Todd now owns The Heap, so Todd can say DC and Marvel both ripped off his character!

My choices would be :
1. Thanos, his primary goal is the end of all things.
2. Tyrant, pretty much like Thanos but he prefers to enslave people instead of destroying them.
3. Carnage, he's just insane and likes to kill.
4. Loki, same reason holeman gave.
5. Apocalypse, he's been there long enought i don't think i need to give a reason.
