Most of you have probably received a fig or two that smells of smoke (either through the boards or eBay).
Now, i would not consider myself relatively picky. Some other loose figs ive gotten have the smell but not like this.
Hell maybe it doesnt bother you, but my question is, if it did/does do you do anything about it if the odor is particularly strong?

Put it in front of a fan and wait. Other than that, I'm not sure. Maybe just let it soak in some soapy water.

I heard to put them in a box and put some baking soda in the box to and close the lid and wait a few hours or a day.

I got a figure off eBay a few years that absolutely REEKED of cigarette smoke. I put it in an open window and blasted a fan at it overnight and the next day, and it cleared up.
I also got a used PS2 about a year ago that was saturated in pot smoke. That one didn't bother me quite as much, and actually helped my eyesight.:)

Suck it up, wussies. The things stink of whatever resins and paints used to make them when you pull them out of the package. That or just wash the thing with warm water will loosen up the tar, etc, and maybe a mild dish soap to help it along. Then some compressed air to get the water (and deposits) out of any cracks.

I think what made me laugh the most was that the first step is drinking the beer. :p

Last August I won a vinyl Godzilla fig on ebay. This was probably the one time I didn't thoroughly read the terms entirely, and the auction stated the fig smelled of smoke. Had I noticed, I wouldn't have bid, but too late, my fault. But I was expecting a slight cig smoke smell.
The fig arrives and when I open the box a mushroom cloud of stench blasts in my face. Ugh I am not sure if it's cigar, pipe smoke or what but good gravy what a powerful stink.
I put the fig in a box with a cup of baking soda and some dryer sheets after reading this may work. Three months later I took the fig out of the box. There seems to be a 2% improvement.
I decide that maybe just airing out will help. I put it in an open area in the garage. Every so often I give it the sniff test. Here it is 9 months after I bought the thing and it still reeks!
Since it's hollow I was wanting to avoid soaking it due to mildew but at this rate it can't be worse than how it smells now.

In my eBaying experience, it's usually been the packaging materials (most commonly, crumpled newspaper) that smell of cigarette smoke, rather than the figures themselves.

To be honest I've always done the baking soda and a near air tight container, then just wash off the fig when youre done.
Baking soda takes the odors and absorbs them, its why you can put it in your fridge or a bathroom and it'll keep the smells down to a minimum and keep your food from tasting or smelling like other foods like milk or cheese tasting like fish, etc.:)

I've gotten figs that reeked of cigar smoke, I just put em on the shelf and gradually, over a couple days the smell went away.

What about letting it soak in a container filled with Fabrezze?

That probably would'nt be the smartest thing to do, it might have some reaction with the paint on the figure.

I bought a car on the cheap that absolutely reaked of cigar and fat sweaty guy. I hosed the whole thing down with a whole bottle of fabreeze and when I went to flip it everyone kept telling me how nice the car smelled. I would give the ole fabreeze a try.

I often buy cheap, loose figures from yard sales, etc. that smell of smoke. Put them in a ziplock bag w/ a dryer sheet for a few days to a week, it always does the trick.

Fabreez spray treatment. No soaking, just multiple sprayings.
Geez! How about this, and how about that....
Just do the baking soda thing. It's cheap, you get it in many stores, and it does the trick. DONE!
p.s. whoever sent it to you - don't forget to retaliate with an anthrax envelope.

Airing figs out sometimes doesn't work if it's an older fig that has been saturated with smoke and left that way for eons.
I returned an eBay item because of massive smoke stench, and as a smoker myself in the past (been years since then) I had some old old figs that smelled of my old place.
Here's the trick that works for me every time:
CAT LITTER
No seriously. Unscented, clumping or non... natural litter doesn't work. Shoot for litter with odor absorbing crystals or whatnot. Put the litter in a sealed plastic box or just buy a small plastic tub of litter. Place the fig on top of the litter. You don't need to cover it. Seal it up and wait 24-48 hrs. Remove. Not only does this remove 90% of the stink (really picky noses will pick it up if they get a real close deep whiff), but it usually restores some of that "new plastic" smell. Mmmm...
If all else has failed you, try the cat litter. Works wonders for me.

You could also try leaving him in a room with the windows all open and a fan blowing on him like others have said.
