I understand that there was a download update for PS3 that allows users to upscale their regular DVDs and also upscale older games (if you have the 60 gig). Do you need to pay in order to use PS3 online? or can you just hook up the internet cable and download it??

As of now, you don't need to pay anything to hook up online. You can also visit their website, download the update to a flash drive then install locally.

Scroll down and click Update using a PC...

If you have the PS3 connected online and have created an account with them - it's free - then you get notification of each update and are prompted to download them after you log in.

Or, yes, you can go to the website with your PC and download the updates onto a flash drive, then plug it into the PS3 USB port.

The only things they charge for are things in the PS Store. Full games, certain add-ons and updates, crap like that.

The PS3 makes regular DVDs look a bit better on an HDtv... don't expect miracles, but it does a better job than most stand alone upcoverting players on the market today.

wait, so the PS3 didn't always upscale regular dvd's?

Nope... it took a firmware update to give it the ability since the PS3 has no hardware scaler onboard.

How does it improve PS1 and PS2 games?

The same way it does DVDs... it takes the lower res graphics and tries to scale it to the HDtv.

I'm pretty sure it was an update in 2007... if you go into settings you can turn it on or off.

Oh, so that option wasn't there before? mine has that option. That's why I was like "what the hey man" I thought it did it already.

Depends when you bought your PS3 ;)

As of firmware 1.8 (May 2007), the ability to upscale DVDs and PS1 and PS2 games has been available.

I got it around last fall. It's 60gb and I know I've updated it before for all those media capability features like, Divx and Java.
