I always wonder how Vladimir Konstantinov would have done in his career if it weren't for his accident.

was it skip bayless?

RickyWilliams34
06-05-2008, 03:05 PM
Haha no it wasn't Skip. He was from ESPN The Magazine but I have no clue what his name is. Even Rome was saying how Lidstrom isn't even the best captain Detroit has had. (referring to Yzerman)

Maybe he meant European player?

no he said ever. he was trying to justify the fact he is a good offensive defenseman and he won a cup with the russian 5, the all star laden '02 team and now without yzerman.

Lidstrom very well could be the best D-man of the modern era, and is as complete, as solid, and as good all around as any from any era. There I said it. Is he the best? I don't know, but you'd be hard pressed to find flaws in his game.

Arguing such things is as useless as Jews and Muslims getting together to discuss faith.

RickyWilliams34
06-05-2008, 03:31 PM
Then say D-man in the modern era. There's no way he's better than Gretz let alone Orr, Lemieux, Howe, etc.

Poochiesdead

What's the modern era though? I would have Bourque and Coffey rated as better than him as well...

I heard on ESPN radio yesterday that if you took away all of the Gretzky's goals, he still has the most points of anyone ever.

On Defense alone...yes. But as a total package...I'd put Lidstrom ahead. But still behind Bourque and Coffey.

what about pronger? he's one of a few players i've seen that really affects his teams play when he's not in the lineup.

and no disrespect to bourque and coffey but i think at this point lidstrom wins that argument since he's become one of those guys who's "done it all" and he will still probably play 4 or 5 more years. and now being the first euro captain to lead a team to the cup and doing it w/o yzerman, federov, shanahan etc kinda shows his true talent and play through any situation in his career. bourque was great as we know but face it that colorado team he won with was a monster and probably could have one without him.

As for calling that team a monster, all the teams Lidstrom won with were ridiculous. Same with Coffey. Put them on those Boston teams instead of Bourque and they're sitting here empty handed. So the Cup arguement is moot. Purely on skill, I think Bourque and Coffey were better players than Lidstrom.

It's official: Jim Rome is a ******.

Lidstron is the best hockey player ever:
NOT named Wayne Gretzky
OR Mario Lemieux
OR Bobby Orr
OR Gordie Howe
OR about a few dozen others

No my friend, sorry but Lids rates above them.

Best D-men.

1. Orr
2. Lidstrom
3 Does it matter?

It has been the recurring compliment from fellow players, and opposing players that it would be quite difficult to find a flaw in his game, and the Swedes have been known to call his game - flawless/perfect. He sets the tone, he is never out of breath - because he is always in position and plays a ton of minutes. When Crosby was asked in his first year of NHL play who impressed him the most in the NHL (mind you this is after only playing Detroit once) he said Lidstrom from the Red Wings.

When you have guys like Scotty Bowman praising Lidstrom (and this is after having coached Coffey as well) and then having Coffey (who was mentioned as being better than Lids) mention how great Lids was going to be and that he knew it from the start... well my vote goes to Lidstrom.

I agree the Lidstrom is one of the greatest. I would rather just throw their names together and not rank them because of the difference in era's.

Paul Coffey though? really? I used to love it when i was a kid, watching wings games and then watching him score on us when he's on our team.

I was infact happy when Bourque won a cup finally, i just wish it was with Boston.

I think Lidstrom is every bit as good a defenseman as Coffey and Bourque. He wasn't as offensively gifted as Coffey, but Coffey was not as good as Lidstrom in his own end. It's tough to compare really. What is more important to you?

Rome is an idiot. He did a segment about Manny Ramirez hitting number 500 and referred to him as "Man Ram" 11 times. Some of those were two or three per sentence. My favorite is "It's just Man Ram being Man Ram". He did it too whenever Manny high fived that guy after catching the fly ball. I wasn't able to count, but I assure the use of the aforementioned nickname was more than gratuitous. Somebody get this jackass off TV.

Lidstrom is an awesome player. When he does retire he will go down as one of the best D ever, but not THE best D ever or THE best player ever.

I'd rate Lidstrom over Coffey based on the total package. I believe Scotty Bowman did as well when he prett much ran him out of Detroit to get Shanahan. I believe Bowman was a big reason Coffey was jettisoned from Pittsburgh as well.

My top 10 list all-time:
Bobby Orr
Ray Bourque
Nicklas Lidstrom
Paul Coffey
Larry Robinson
Doug Harvey
Scott Stevens
Dennis Potvin
Al MacInnis
Chris Chelios

I would have had the same top 3, but I was worried a Detroit fan would call me a homer for having Bourque ahead of Lidstrom. But I agree with your top 3. :D
