Is no one enjoying collecting anymore?

I sold mine over a year ago. Just lost interest. But kept a few baseball, until recently. Now all I have are 8 Angels SPs, and thats it. But I still enjoy coming on here.

I do still collect autographs, jerseys, and a few cards.

mostly the two packaging changes in one year, and the cardboard isn't helping.

plus no chases (real ones) anymore.

im thinking just collecting canucks and lindens thats it
starting to losing interest

I lost almost all interest except for favorite players and teams. That and lack of room and not finding hardly anything at retail, even regulars.

Room was definitely an issue for me getting rid of my sealed collection...well that and the fact that I couldn't help myself from opening expensive figures....:D

Most of those that are getting out are the guys that had a reg and chase of every figure since the beginning in certain sports.

Think your statement all the way through..... If people are selling their collection, that means somebody is BUYING it, right... It's not like people are tossing their figures in the garbage...

I'm slimming down to just what I really like to keep and am buying only players I like now.

I got a Bo-Sox Clemens sitting here that I don't want anymore.

nothing really to collect anymore since the players I grew up rooting for have already been made or I've come to terms that they won't be made

Some people collect teams, some people collect players, or positions. The change of the variant/chase is disturbing to most and hopefully this could be something that is temporary.

Poor quality,Sucky packaging,Boring ass chase figs!

06-15-2008, 10:10 AM
Same figures over and over and over and over..Same teams over and over and over and over..Thats why I stopped..Now all I collect are figs for the Redskins, Wizards, and Orioles.

I'd sell most of my collection, but they wouldn't sell for anything so im pretty much stuck with them..Unless anyone wants them? lol

I only collect what I like, Bills and Brewers items. I collect a few on the exclusive items, but not a lot. Just too many figs and not enough space.

Mine have been going in the Toys for Tots bins at Christmas. Basically what's the point of having them if they are just going to be in a box in a closet.

Why is everyone starting threads about everyone trying to sell their collection?

because TMP SP'S have run thier course.

No ecxitiment anymore, just disappointment after disappointment

The fun seems to be gone.
1. The new chases are garbage.
2. The "hunt" isn't worth it and hasn't been for awhile.
3. When you talk trade on these boards, everyone wants more than what they're willing to give for your figure. It's the old garbage/gold.

People realize the hobby has jumped the shark. Many people have thousands invested into their collection. They are selling now and trying to get as much back as possible because in the future the values of many figures are going to plummet.

At least then, I'll be able to finally afford my 49er Rice that eludes me.

There will be certain figs like SLU that will always retain their value. 9ers Rice, Snowy Brady, No Helmets, NHL 4 Horseman, 2003 SB set, WS Bonds, 3rd jersey Roy, Black Finlay, White Tejada, etc.

No Chases, No Point in hunting

Cheap looking cardboard backs.

Terrible and repetative player selection

For me its time to fill out on some of the earlier series but as far as anything new I'll get a few to get auto'd but otherwise its time to move on to something else

BORING

I sold all my stuff to concentrate on my Home Theater set-up. I get far more enjoyment out of that then I do with figures that just sit in my closet and collect dust!

i don't think everyone is selling they're collections. just a few here and there, the main thing i think is that people are cutting back on new purchases, i know i am by about 90%. mostly because of the new packaging, the new chases, and running out iof room.

Not selling mine. Actually, I don't seem to be able to give away some of the older, outdated ones :(. They certainly aren't selling on the cheap!

I still buy them, but sporadically, especially the non-Legends. Biggest reasons are that I am stuck with too many outdated, who cares SPs (see above), too many repeat players, and not enough players that represent my local teams. The latter two reason all come back to Lack of Player & Team Selection, which is a much bigger issue than chases for me. It's not like I had a lot of luck chasing the chases, especially with even fewer retailers carrying SPs, and those that do getting fewer cases as well.

If TMP changed what I find wrong with SPs, I think I would be right there buying them on the regular again.

I have waivered on this for abit..I want to cut back on the collection as a whole just because space has gotten really limited, and because I started with abunch of everything and have stayed to just Surprise pieces, nfl regulars, nhl goalies.

if i decided to sell I'd be happy/lucky to get back 10.00 apiece for them(if I sold it as alot only)

I guess Andy was right! He always said space would become an issue for most collectors. TMP should have made these at 4.5 Inch scale like he suggested! ;)

I got out years ago when the getting was still good. Sold my entire collection for $20 a piece and never looked back. I never even look at these in the store anymore, does any stores even carry them anymore?

You know........I just don't understand the people who say things like, "If there aren't going to be (or 'I can't find'...) any chases like there used to be, then I don't want to collect any more!" I've got a friend who is a great guy. Collects diecast stuff, and no disrespect to him, but there are times when I want to smack him in the head, because he gets all pissy, talking about not wanting to continue collecting Hot Wheels, etc. if he can't find any Treasure Hunts.

Drives me NUTS!!! Any person who says they're going to give up collecting an entire line of something simply because they can't find a rare version of something in that line tells me by their behavior that though they may have started off collecting out of love for the line, what keeps them going is the love of the chase and beating other guys to this or that thing. Yes, it's exciting, but don't dare tell me you 'LOVE' the thing you're collecting if all it takes to get you of the hobby is that you can't get what comprises only a small fraction of the overall product line. Ridiculous.

Or they shouldn't of got greedy and made so many lines all at once resulting in flooding the market and poor quality figures from what collectors had come to expect. When they introduced the Legends lines they should've cut out one regular series.

IMO it was just a matter of TMP pumping out to much product in to short of a period of time and most collectors maxed out their display room long before they would have if they had cut back a series a year or even cut back on the number of figures per series.

Part of the problem is/was people who bought every figure that came out...Ugh.

I started collecting only my teams (Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees) and any former Oklahoma Sooners and still get the same joy from it as I did three or four years ago.

My only complaint is space...I'll add to that to say the room I keep them displayed in is very small so of course space is def. an issue and I'm an opener...I also collect KISS figures and have some of those on display but mostly the room is filled with Yankees, Cowboys and Sooners customs.

If I had to start all over I'd probably NOT collect EVERY Yankee and Cowboy and only get the coolest ones and the ones of players I really liked. I was so anxious in the beginning to build up a collection and get it "completed" that now my stuff feels a bit cluttered.

I still love SP's...

i am NOT selling but, i have seriously cut back on my purchases of SP,s.
i am/was a full set collector.
but haven,t bought a full set since series NHL 14.
out of the 28 reg. figs from those NHL series 14 -18, i have only bought 14 figs.
1/2 the line = 1/2 the money spent.
out of the 9 chase figs ,i have bought 7.
my reasons ?
repeat players
no goal nets
generic logos
less chase figs
the new cardboard-back packaging {although i have not seen he new packaging},can be included and rediculous new chase fig idea.

hey whatever. i'm collecting more now than when they first came out. the botton line for me is the these are representations of atheletes and teams and wheather or not they will be worth anything is irrelevant to me. if it looks cool(new black canucks linden) or it's my favorite team(roberto alomar mets fig's) i'm gonna get it.

when you get down to it these figures became revolutionary to the hobby. SLU's were okay but the detail and liveliness of these figure's is second to none. i agree some of them are getting tired or uninspired but for the handful that are like that there are dozens that are classics.

when it come down to it, get it if you like it and don't worry about it. hell the only SP i don't want to get right now is the series 11 alex smith, i just want to see if he pans out before i shell out $50.

For the record, I'm still buying full sets, of all sports, all lines, which I've been doing since day 1. The only thing that sucks, is that eventually I'll have to start taking down some of the older figures. If only the made the BASES smaller, that would be a good start.

For the people that have room issues, the best possible way I found to keep the collection growing is to rotate the displays.

I used to buy only Chicago players, but after Jalen Rose, Ben Wallace, Scott Podsednik, Anthony Thomas, Cedric Benson, Mark Prior... I'm sure more will be added to the list, I'm only going to collect Chicago players from the legends line.

TMP makes too many poor choices for player selection. I'm not really selling what I have, since I never really had that many figures. I do still buy player poses I like, so that I can have them customized later into legends TMP doesn't make.

I buy what I like. Got my Spurs sans Finley and Robinson, but I'll pick them up eventually. I buy NFL RBs and will be getting Riggins and Portis soon.

I'd also like to snag a few big time athletes from other sports too, just because of their legendary status, Mantle, Nolan Ryan, Gretsky, etc.

I would think the best option over time is to trim down older stuff even if you continue to collect newer stuff. Afterall there are always going to be players that just don't perform to the level in professional sports that they did at a previous level. But wow there are collectors parting with the serious hard to find stuff. It must have taken them time to pick up all that stuff. They are parting with some stuff that I would classify as "keepers'. I think I'm always going to have some "keepers" when it comes to sports collectibles.
