View Full Version : ESPN.com columnist Jemele Hill's suspension

Mark Weber

I gave Jemele Hill three columns on ESPN.com before I threw in the towel. I found her columns trite and annoying, and I just stopped reading her work (did the same with Rick Reilly several years ago after his Sammy Sosa challenge and Pat Tillman article).

I didn't know she'd been suspended for a week until her apology was posted on ESPN.com's homepage. Memo to young writers: If you've taken Kelly Tilghman and Don Imus to task in your column for their offensive statements, you probably shouldn't make any jokes with the word "Hitler" in them...

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hill/080623

Hill's ESPN contract is up in November.

She is horrible. She is one of the worst columnists ESPN has. I dont know how she still has a job. I hope they dont renew her contract.

Funny though how she says something like that and there isnt a huge national uproar. White guy says something and the whole black community attacks.

Seriously, does ESPN really have many columnists worth reading? Almost all of their TV personalities are annoying as hell, and I usually avoid their writing as well.

White guy says something and the whole black community attacks.

That statement couldn't be more false. Just because you see Sharpton and Jackson up in arms doesn't mean anything. I'll say this once again for the white people who don't seem to understand. Sharpton and Jackson don't speak for the black community. Most black people hate them too.

They got Don Imus fired for his comments. They helped ruin the reputation and lives of the Duke Lacrosse players.

I could go on and on how those 2 and others in the black community have jumped all over people who have said something not PC or been accused of something. They may not speak for all of the black community and Im glad most black people hate them. But the fact is they are the face of the black community when it comes to things like racist comments or crimes. Whether you like it or not they are the face and do things to ruin other people.

If Imus can be fired over his comments then Hill should be fired of hers. Neither things are appropriate to say. Neither comment was worse then the other. So why isnt this a bigger story? So why isnt Hill fired immediately? She shouldnt get any different treatment.

Really? Was I not invited to the meeting where black people made them the face of the black community? You're just reaching to make an assinine point. They only seem like the face of the black community because other people who aren't black have anointed them to that position.

They are not the face of the black community and never will be.

keep on thinking that....the media has made them the face and in this country thats all that needs to happen for someone to be the face. sharpton and jackson could careless what the black community thinks of them...heck they could care less about black people. all they care about is making money off the race and gaining fame off the race.

those 2 are attention you know whats. the media loves those. so when ever sharpton or jackson wanna spew crap the cameras and mics will be there to listen. those 2 are the face of the black race live with it.

I think it's been less of an event because ESPN heard the criticism and amended her column an hour or two after it was posted. She spent a week away (missing maybe one column maybe?) and then posted her apology. The apology clued in more people than the
affront - perhaps a sign of the depth of her readership...

Her editor should have been suspended too.

I heard about her suspension about a week ago and wasn't surprised at all.

All of the stuff she writes is so outrageous, subjective and plain stupid.

ESPN better get rid of her real quick after that BS article.

Ah I see so they covered it up to save her butt from more bashing. Still the story is out there and could be run with if wanted. Im sure if it was Skip Bayless saying something negative towards blacks even if it was fixed right off it would be blown way out of proportion. But since Hill is black its not as big of a deal I guess. Double standard of america.

Oh yeah...because every time there is an issue involving possible insensitivity in the media regarding black people, the news all runs to kat williams and tyler perry to see what they have to say. CNN totally broadcasts their press conferences. [sarcasm]

like it or not, the world looks to sharpton and jackson as the spokespersons for the black community. It's a fact. Does that mean that all black people agree with them? no. Is it right or fair? Probably not. But it's the way it is.

Ugh, you think her writing is terrible? You should see on tv in person. She's actually even more annoying then. Even during interviews about some random topic, she always brings up race. Every friggin time. It's always about race with her. Come on ESPN, be done with her.

What was wrong with Reillys article on Tillman?

It seemed convenient to me - while I absolutely agree that there are U.S. soldiers who sacrifice their lives for their country and receive little to no recognition outside of their service, I think you can make that point without minimizing Tillman's sacrifice. I think it's a pretty shaky argument when a columnist complains about the media.

This girl is the worst. I remember watching her last year around the time the Phils were going for 10,000 losses and she said she was surprised that the Rays didn't get there first. The sad part was that she was serious. Skip Bayless tried to correct her but she stood by her comment.

I can see where you would say this, but I believe that she just lets her personal feelings on race and race relations get too much into her sports reporting. I remember when she was outrages about the Lebron "King Kong" Gissell Bunchen photo and Skip Bayless (who I feel like has something against young black athletes but we wont get to that in this thread) straight up asked her "do you have a problem with seeing a black man with a white woman pictured like that?" and the look on Jamelle's face was priceless.

They have their hits and misses. Bill Simmons' NBA insight is spectacular, and I like most of their baseball "insiders" (Keith Law, Rob Neyer, Jerry Crasnick). Everyone likes Buccigross right? From the network itself, Scott Van Pelt and John Anderson are solid, while Mike Wilbon is outstanding and Bill Pidto vastly underrated.

On the other hand, Chris Berman, Stuart Scott, Peter Gammons, DJ Gallo, Jim Caple, Stephen A. Smith, Jim Rome and Kenny Mayne do nothing for me.

Try doing a shot every time Gammons says "Well" to start a sentence...

Bill Simmons is great. Buccigross, as mentioned, completely rules. I really enjoyed Chuck Klosterman's contributions to page 2, but that was awhile back.
