Guitar' gets in on toy action

http://blogs.usatoday.com/entertainment/images/2008/06/25/guitarherox.jpg

Collect the whole set: USA TODAY's Mike Snider gets the dish on Guitar Hero dolls.

Guitar Hero is entering rarified air for a video game. It's now deemed worthy of action figures, courtesy of master plastic caster Todd McFarlane.

Four new action figures (expected to cost $10 to $15 each) from the music game will hit stores this fall, timed to the release of the new Guitar Hero World Tour video game. The characters available will be the God of Rock, Johnny Napalm, Axel Steel and Lars Umlaut. With each 6-inch figure, "you will be able to sort of mix and match" guitars and body parts, says McFarlane, who is CEO of McFarlane Toys.

If we could get Guitar Hero versions of Slash (possible) and Tom Morello (not likely), then this license would be worth it. I hope they didn't pay too much for this license. How many series could they possibly make with the limited selection of Guitar Hero characters? After two series, you've basically exhausted the entire roster. Not to mention that most of the characters have very limited appeal anyway.

This line will be a pass for me.
I hate the game but my three young chrildren love it because its so simple to play.
Doesent matter tho because they wont be buying any figures any time soon.
Looks like neither will I, at least not any from McFarlane.

Looks like their new Target Demographic is children.
Thats why you dont see any women in the line up.
Looks like they want to sell to the children who collect tech deck skate boards.

I dont under stand how NECA gets great licenses like TMNT - Resident Evil - Castlevania.

Things I would love for McFarlane to have done for years, but they go out and pick up
boring themed TV shows (Sorry I dont watch lost and the figures are dull to say the least)

Old cartoon characters ? Flinestones ? Tom & Jerry ? Grinch ?

Stupid movies ... Wererabit - Corpse Bride - Napoleaon Dynamite

I bought none of these figures. I dont understand why the other companys
get great licenses and McFarlane picks up subpar pegwarming crap.

Not for me but I think its a smart line for McF. Guitar Hero is huge with kids and they are trying to expand their fan base and introduce new young fans beyond the sports line. If they actually brand the WW2 figures as Call of Duty that trend will continue, alnong with the Spawn Robots line.
But it does give old school fans such as myself and most board members pause for concern....its pretty evident that McF is really skewing much younger now, whacking in house lines & such. I wont be buying any McF now until the new Classic Covers line in 2009 (?) unless they announce something appealing. But other companies such as N*** and DC Direct will be picking up the slack.

I really don't know which way the winds will blow for this line. Guitar Hero is popular, and people out there might just be braindead enough to consume anything related to the brand. Even if this turns out to be a huge boost for TMP's sales, it's still the death knell for their spirit. TMP has taken some questionable licences in the past, but this is just blatant prostitution to the masses. TMP hasn't just sold their soul, they've taken a dump on everything they used to stand for.

Maybe not a popular choice with the hardcore/old school collectors but I reckon these will sell incredibly well. This is the sort of licence that has the ability to transcend standard retail practice and could possibly end up being stocked in music and videogame stores.

To be honest, I don't think McFarlane could produce a single line that would generate overwhelming positive feedback from these forums anymore. 100 people sign an online petition for a specific figure or line and suddenly it's expected that McF should invest in it rather than something that will actually generate profit for them.

Yeah, and Hanna-Barbera had 50 years (more if you want to go all the way back to their MGM days in the 40's) of exposure as some of the most famous characters of all time, and it did ****-all for that line.

I can't disagree with any of that. But then I wasn't trying to say that these will do well 'just' because of the games popularity. There's a whole host of factors to take into consideration. It's more about who the games (and therefore the licence) are popular with than the fact that they are.

Hopefully this will make TMP some cash so that they can produce something cooler down the road.

yeah more cash to do cool stuff in the end for us fantasy/comic/scifi/geekystuff collectors...

roooiiiiiiiight

you mean like the kind of cash the sport license did...

cash that was used, in the end, to....ya know......get the freaking Guitar Hero license ?!?!!???!!?

I think I will have to pass, but I think the Guitar Hero nerds are going to love them.

Will the target audience for those figures have any spare change to afford those figures?

I never realized that Guitar Hero had characters. I mean, I played the first one at a friends house a long time ago and noticed the pseudo-guitarist that you played, but I thought the focus was just pressing buttons and "plucking the strings" to get a good score. You don't choose a character, do you? Oh well.

This thread is funny

now that I'm home from work, and more relaxed,:cool::cool:
I agree with the funny.

This has been a therapeutic experience.
Let out the rage.
Rage on some toys!
The outrage!!!!!

Bush is still president, and **** still runs the show.

This Guitar Hero thing is so incredibly unimportant.
Feck, I may even buy them now that I've looked at it through green-colored glasses.
Probably not though ;)

Worst TMP decision yet. Worthless, useless, horrible figures.

Wow, I just lost soooooooooooo much respect for this company, I really did, do we really need terrible video game characters as figures, when theres soo many great characters yet to be made?

What the hell happened to the McFarlane toys of past, I really hope these pan out, but I highly doubt I'll be buying any of these.
