I like the Cyclones, but I doubt they'd use it with Iowa State being the Cyclones- Oklahoma is football country, and they may not like that. Some variation, like Twisters, would work.

Cyclones or Tornado works. Call the arena the Storm Cellar.

On another forum, it's been beaten to death but Barons and Outlaws has a good ring to it. Barons refers back to the time during OK's oil boom and Outlaws refers to a previous semi-pro football team that was very popular.
Any reference to weather is just being lazy, plus its not very intimidating. ;)

Barons is lame, and Outlaws was the USFL team (they were a spring pro league in the early 80s for those who don't know). I like Outlaws, but I don't know if the NBA would approve it.

Here are some facts about Oklahoma that could help with picking a name:
Pawhuska, Oklahoma, had the first Boy Scout troop in America (1909) - the Boy Scouts?
The first parking meter was created in Oklahoma and installed in Oklahoma City in 1935 - the Meter Maids?
Oklahoma is the winter quarters for more circuses than any other state - the Acrobats?
Oklahoma has the distinction of having the highest hill in the world, Mount Cavanal, at 1,999 feet - the Kings of the Hill?
State insect - Honeybee
State animal - the Buffalo or Bison
State bird - the Flycatcher
State flower - mistletoe
State reptile - the Mountain Boomer

I'm from New Orleans not Seattle so no need for sympathy. I just hate how OKC handled the Hornets situation, publicly stating they were trying to keep the team from NO, and then are given their own a year or two later. I'd rather see their desire for an NBA team go about as fulfilled as San Antonio's attempt at keeping an NFL team.
I also hate this move because of how teams are holding cities hostage by demanding new arenas when it has been proven time and time again that owners can afford to pay for stadiums/arenas themselves. But the worst precedent was with Washington paying for a $600 mill stadium for the Nationals when there was no other place for the team to go at all. Stadiums and arenas should NOT be responsibilities of local government.
Looking back most of this should have been put in the other thread.

Maybe they should use this as an opportunity to move team names back where they belong...
Give Oklahoma the Hornets (it's close to a honeybee), give New Orleans back the Jazz, give Utah the Lakers (it fits them more then LA) and give LA the Tropics (put them in the Semi-Pro uni's too)

I'd rather see their desire for an NBA team go about as fulfilled as San Antonio's attempt at keeping an NFL team.I never heard that. OKC knew from the beginning it was temporary. The Hornets owner was making tons of money (something that he didn't have before) and wanted to stay in OKC and I think offered a minority share to anyone in OK to keep it there (which could have been a rumor).

People who have not been following the situation shouldn't be commenting, "oh, no fan support". It was a bad arena deal and Bennet and Stern jumped on the chance to move a great basketball franchise. Your telling me the Heat, Bucks and Atlanta have great attendence numbers? That the fan support there is significantly better than in Seattle? Lots of teams have low attendence when they are losing, those teams don't move. It's Wally Walkers fault for not getting talent and letting McMillan walk. It's Schults fault for selling the team to Bennet. It's Sterns fault for turning a blind eye to the situation, looking for ways to make more money. Don't tell me it's the fans fault. The team was supported through winning and losing.
I'm not made at people in OKC. Just realize the type of people who will be running your organization. And to all other fans, be sure you don't get a poor lease agreement. The NBA will not support you.

I'm not going to say the fans didn't have some part in this but for people to say if we would have supported them better they would have stayed is completely wrong. It wouldn't have mattered if we sold out the last 3 seasons they were gone. Actually thats not entirely accurate. It was team President Paul Mott, the OKC Mayor, and some others in the organization who planned this "bee keeper" project to try to keep the Hornets in OKC. These individuals were trying to get Shinn to sell either a minority or a majority interest in the team to Clay Bennett. Shinn found out about this and fired Paul Mott. Shinn wanted to return to NOLA. He was just a little concerned about the recovery which I can completely understand. But, it looks like everything has now turned out for the best. :)

Would the Starbucks guy have sold the team if the team was selling out the arena every game? I doubt it, if the team was making money then they would have stayed in Seattle, but they were losing games, ranked 28th in attendance out of 30 teams this year, and your owner sold the team to a guy from another state....if he did any research he would have known that OKC was rabid for an NBA team and it wasnt coincidence that a buyer from OKC came and then wanted to relocate the team.
When the Hornets came here to OKC, we tried our hardest to keep the team here....if anyone around here says differently they are naive.....the only reason they didnt stay was b/c Stern felt pressure to send them back to NO, due to the Katrina incident and how it would look bad on him.
I can also pretty much guarantee that when Clay bought the Sonics he had no intentions of leaving the team in Seattle....plain and simple. Why should everybody of Seattle or any city have to fork over taxpayer money to keep a sports team. The owner bought a team to make money, people go to place to watch team. Owner get money, use money to build new stadium instead of sucking a city dry of money that people could use for better things.

i hope they do as well as the Grizzlies are doing in Memphis:rolleyes: give it about 5 years of losing to see where the fan support is.
It will be. Just give them time. Once the novelty wears off in 2 years, they will be a laughing stock unless they are championship contenders.
