I would stick with what you have since you have an animated avatar. Since they arent allowed anymore, you wouldnt be able to go back. Since you had it before the changed that you got to keep it.

Are you on a mac or pc? If pc, just open image, then at the bottom of display, one of the icons should be open for editting. I think it is second from right. Otherwise, you can go start: run: paint. On a mac I'd have no idea as I've never owned one.
