It's sad that he needed attention that badly.

It's not even that he needed the attention as much as he needs the money.

so is his jersey now going to say "Ocho Cinco" and the 85 below it?

so is his jersey now going to say "Ocho Cinco" and the 85 below it?

If he legally changed it, then I would think yes...

I love how on ESPN at the bottom of the screen it said "NFL is looking into the issue." What could they possibly do? Suspend him for changing his name?

Ha, who cares, if he wants to act that way let him. I persoanlly love that the NFL probably won't be able to do anything about it, to me it's really funny

It sounds like his name could translate into Chad (I don't know what else it would mean), Soap, Eight (not eighty), Five.

That's just stupid funny!

i think it's funny....and smart...he's going to making lots of money on jersey/t-shirt sales this year

Its not funny... its old and sad. His act has worn so thin that he has to pull off this stupid stunt. He has turned himself into a cartoon character. Its like trying to listen to Robin Williams do an intervew and he just keeps going off... ok we get it you are trying to be funny... stop all ready.

Uhh, yay??? Who cares....other than him? Not ragging on you MrSD.
BTW, learn Spanish Chad. You're not Mr. "eighty five", you're Mr. "eight, five".
And Point65- soap is "jabon" in Spanish, not "javon".

From what I read this is just a rumor started by him
From Yahoo!'s story:
"The Cincinnati Bengals (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/cin/;_ylt=Aq005fEPyVl4sbOG4FnwTDwdsLYF) receiver has legally changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco in Broward County, Fla., a switch that became official this week, according to several media reports. Johnson, who lives in Miami, didn’t return a message left on his cell phone Friday night.
“It’s something I don’t think anyone has ever done before,” he told the team’s Web site. “Have I ever had a reason for why I do what I do? I’m having fun.”
Two years ago, Johnson gave himself the moniker—a reference in Spanish to his No. 85—and put it on the back of his uniform before a game. Quarterback Carson Palmer (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6337/;_ylt=AitJhyC7ld6BKzNVsL6J3A4dsLYF) ripped it off before the kickoff. After the season, coach Marvin Lewis—who dislikes Johnson’s attention-getting stunts—referred to the receiver as “Ocho Psycho.” "
I love the "Ocho Psycho" part! LMFAO! Hey, but it's not like news reports haven't been wrong before...

What's your point? There is no concrete evidence that he changed it in there.

Here are other international options for the upcoming years, as our man Chad works to enhance global recognition of his brand:

Otto cinque (Italiano)
Octo cinque (Greek)
VIII V (roman numerals- pronunciation may be an issue)
Osiem pie,c' (Polish- ask someone else how to pronounce that one)
Nane tano (Swahili)
Tamaniyyah hamsah (Arabic- if he decides to convert)
Het hei (Yiddish- if he decides to go that way)
Hachi go (Japanese- I like this one)
Eight five (English- not so sure how comfortable senor ocho cinco is with this dialect)
Kahdeksan viisi (Finnish)
Atta fem (Swedish)
Eahta fif (Old English- I'm sure he's familiar already with some OE)
Huit cinque (French)

If thats the case then its even more pathetic. At least the other way I'd give him credit for acually having the balls to do it.

I dont know anything about his family, but its kind of strange to just throw away your family name like that for some publicity stunt.

Picture this:

Ocho Cinco runs out onto the field with JOHNSON on the back of his jersey, leading to Palmer running up and ripping off that name plate REVEALING OCHO CINCO.

That'd just be hilarious.

I know. That's why I said it sounds like soap. I was making the point since it's spanish that he wanted to use to change his name. I'm sure it's pronounced, "Ja-VAHN" or "Ja-VAWN" ,depending on your accent, but it spanish it's close to soap.

Either way, I wonder how long before he changes it back before his mom gets offended by him.

Chad was raised by his grandmother, his mother wasn't around and his dad had taken off. Probably why he didn't have as much attachment to the name as you might think.

Hey, who knows. He thinks "ocho cinco" is eighty five, maybe he thinks Javon is "soap". :D

So, when someone makes a play, say in high school for example, the announcer said "Number two, one, *insert name*, with the tackle", not "Number twenty one, *insert name*, with the tackle"??? Personally, I've almost always heard "twenty one" .

You don't understand "urban" speak do you? Urbanites typically rep their area codes and refer to them as the two, oh, two...not the two hundred and two. Do yourself a favor and at least get SOME street cred.

I do not think that the player gets a cut of the sales. I know that Michael Irvin talked about that a few years back.

It's been changed. Chad will benefit handsomely from this. And, like I said, he did this primarily for the $$$$ since he couldn't get Mike Brown to give him a new, richer contract.
