I was going to start this up yesterday, but I got busy with work, and now it looks like I'm copying Sting. Sorry:o. But anywho, the best division in football deserves the best thread on the Spawn Boards. First big game of the season tonight with Philly and Dallas, so let's get this started.

New York Giants (2-0) Next up: Cincy
Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) Next up: Dallas
Dallas Cowboys (1-0) Next up: Philidelphia
Washinton Redskins (1-1) Next up: Arizona

Please don't pummel me Giants fans but:

Boy, that's two weeks in a row that the Giants played Godawful teams and struggled with them. Sure, they ran up the score late on St.Louis after the players quit on Linehan but today's game came down to how many timeouts the Bengals had left in regulation. One more timeout = Bengals win on the road.

Please don't pummel me Giants fans but:

Why would I pummel you? It's just another one of your pointless "what if" scenarios that are interesting to think about for about three seconds and then you just move on. Like what would happen if the Saints secondary didn't have two major meltdowns within 6 minutes last weekend against the Redskins? Just totally pointless but fun to think about, I guess.

Moot point now, but no, Andy's job wouldn't be in jeopardy. Eagles management has always been adept at sticking with a coach much longer than they should.

Strahan is a tool and has no idea what he is talking about. He also picked the Cowboys to go to Super Bowl over his own Giants. You would think for a guy that played in the NFC East he would have more insight.

He didn't really use the right words, but what I'm assuming he was trying to say that for a team that has been in complete shambles all season, they really did a decent job hanging with, and beating, a team that some were saying is one of the better teams in the league.

The score won't reflect that, because STL is terrible on offense, but they did force 3 turnovers on D, and sacked Campbell 4 times.

So, while I agree they didn't beat them "handily" they did beat them up pretty bad, despite the close score.

Pittsburgh and Tampa upset week?

Hardcore Legend
10-21-2008, 01:18 AM
While I don't think Pittsburgh is particularly good, them beating New York wouldn't be that much of an upset. They can win ugly. Even if they get beat in most aspects of the game, they'll find a way to ugly up the game and win.

Dallas SHOULD lose to Tampa, Philly SHOULD beat Atlanta (unless we get some more Matt Ryan magic) and so help me, if the Redskins lose to the worst team in the NFL (Detroit), I'm jumping in front of a train.

Tuesday morning, we should wake up with the NFC East standings being:

Redskins 6-2 (PIT)
Giants 5-2 (DAL)
Eagles 4-3 (SEA)
Cowboys 4-4 (NYG)

Eagles, with help from the 'Boys, would have a chance to jump to second in a division they seemed dead in.

Then again, I don't see the Cowboys beating the Giants and if Philly loses to Seattle, they should quit football.

3 point dog isn't much of a dog.

The Steelers don't seem to do anything especially well. They just do everything good enough and have had some fortunate breaks go their way (Ravens game).

That, and 3 of their 5 wins have come against the Texans, Browns and Bengals....when none of those teams were playing well at all. The verdict is still out on how good the Jags and Ravens really are.

Btw- "healthy"..Which Westbrook hardly is.

That's funny, since I'm pretty sure Portis has a worse injury history then Westbrook.

Fantasy or not, Westbrook is one of the Top 5 backs in the league, Portis is luckily in the Top 10.

I don't even know why I am getting into this with you. You're homerism just draws negativity.

Well since we're talking about THIS season, what does the past have to do with it? But except for the 1 season where Portis had a season ending injury where he missed 12 games or so, he's missed like 2 or 3 games since he came here.

How the hell is Westbrook a top 5, but Portis isn't? lol, but im being the homer?

Have you even watched our games this season? Did you see what Portis did to your so called "great" defense?

Both have have been in the league 7 years. These are the stats from their 1st 6 years.

Westbrook 4785 rushing yds 27tds 3207 rec yds 23 tds

Portis 7715 rushing yds 63 tds 1688 rec yds 4 tds

Wouldnt you rather have a pro bowl player?

Jacobs is a good back and so are Barber and Westbroook but out of the 4 Jacobs would be 4th:

Good job assuming something stupid. Look at the Giants situation. Jacobs doesn't always put up the sexy stats because of his role. He weakens and fatigues the defense and allows the speedier backs to come in during the second half and run all over defenses. Coming into last week Derrick Ward lead the league in yards per carry. You're a big stat guys so I'll give you two options to assume; Ward is the best back in the NFL or Jacobs does his job and allows Ward to excel.

Ok, I must have taken crazy pills because someone just ranked the 2008 NFL MVP as the worst back in the NFC East.

As far as injury history, the only injury Portis has had to deal with is when he separated his shoulder during preseason. Since then, he's been one of the most durable backs in the NFL.

If he stays healthy, he's going to win the MVP.

That we are healthy and have gotten the hard part of the schedule out of the way? Westbrook is back, Curtis is back, and McNabb is at 100%.

If it wasn't for Andy Reid neglecting all sensibility, the Eagles would be 4-2, .5 behind the Skins.

Look at the rest of the schedule. We have Atlanta and Seattle, and should be 5-3 going into the Giants game. I said we split with the Giants, Cowboys, and Skins (we always win at FedEx). They will crush Cincinnati, control Baltimore's offense enough, and if they can control the Cardinals and Browns air game, those should be wins also.

That 'six point' spread is bogus because the punt return for a TD was called back until the refs got confused by #50 blocking #50 in the back. The, for some reason, thought the same guy hit himself. Brilliant!

And, the Eagles went up 7 (+ 7) early and then got CREAMED the rest of the game.

Westbrook: 28 touches, 209 yards, 2TD
Portis: 25 touches, 132 yards, 0TD
Jacobs: 19 touches, 53 yards, 0TD
Barber: 31 touches, 100 yards, 0TD

almost - they should have won yesterday. I think they'll win before Cincy.

What the hell are you talking about? How should the Lions have won that game yesterday? They got outgained 439 to 274. TOP: 35 to 24. First downs, 22 to 13. It only looked close early on because the stupid RG got called for a facemask and some other ridiculous penalty killing drives.

Now, as to Week 9. Skins will lose this week, Dallas will lose this week, Eagles will win again with a gift from the refs.

And, Portis is still the league MVP at the halfway point. Best back in the division, playing on 1 good leg.

HTTR!

Depends on what Dallas defense shows up, if the same defense that showed up against Tampa shows up then they have a chance.

Westbrook is playing with one good ankle, and two broken ribs. :p

And the Eagles will win simply because they are playing the Seahawks.

I'm a Giant fan so let me get in on the Portis-Westbrook argument. I think both are good, but when healthy Westbrook is above and beyond better.

Westbrook is a 200 yard rushing and recieving threat every game he plays. 2,000 yards combined guaranteed when healthy. Plus he is the only threat on the Eagles year in and year out and still gets it done.

Not knocking Portis but a Brian Westbrook is rare.

Not 100% sure what you're trying to say here, but you also have to look at who each team played, and what the other RBs on the team did as well.

Philly: Played against the #23 ranked Rushing Defense. Backup had 29 yards on 6 carries.

Skins: Played the #31 ranked Rushing D. Backup had 5 touches for 20 yards

Giants: Played the #3 ranked rushing D. Backup had 18 touches for 81 yards

Cowboys: Played the #8 ranked D. Backup had no touches.

So, while no one would deny how great of a player Westbrook is, for at least this week, you have to put the matchups into perspective.

Well I mean, when you have a below average quarterback, you need to rely on your one star. ;) Kidding.

I like Campbell. Everyone laughed at me for taking him as my #1 QB (Warner lasted to my #2), but he hasn't thrown a pick yet.

He also has 35 more attempts than anyone else.

You give Adrian Peterson (who's currently #2 in rushing), 35 more carries at 4.5 yards, Portis' lead would only be 103.

Right, so in this figurative world, Adrian Peterson in Week 10 is going to rush 35 times for 260 yards and Clinton Portis will magically not be the best back in the East anymore.

bigblu89
10-27-2008, 08:53 PM
I personally don't think Portis is the best back in the East, so what Petersen does in week 10 doesn't make a difference.

Just like the comparisons in the "3rd best QB" thread. The guys with the best stats isn't always the "best" player as far as skill is concern.

But i must add that what impresses me about Portis, more than his yards, is his yards per carry. A guy can rush 1000 times for 2000 yards and lead the league, but it wouldn't make him the best back in the league. But he's averaging 5 yards a carry, which is very impressive.

I personally think Westbrook is a much better all around back, but for the offense they run, Portis is a perfect fit in Washington.

I'm the first to admit that the only team worse than us at this point is the Raiders. But with so much talent there was a chance we could have turned things around after the Zona game, but without any kind of offense that became impossible and we now have 52 guys being coached by the biggest moron in sports running around out there like ******ed gerbils.

While the offense has been shakey, the defense is giving up yardage and points like they are going out of style. The only team they seem to be able to stop is Tampa Bay and Jeff Garcia should be ashamed of himself for that.

For a QB like Johnson who has been with the team long enough to be able to sync with these guys but he just cant play. Any other QB can do a better job then he is doing. Hell with the amazing games for older players like Warner and Collins maybe the boys should pick up Mcnair or Neil O' Donnell?

How cute, making bets on who's gonna be the better "also ran" in the NFC East. :D

If, and that's a big if, the Skins lose tonight, it's the Giants division to lose.

If it wasn't for the fact that they had to play each other, every team in the East is capable of being an 11 or 12 win team.

You know it's happening. One of the teams in the East is going to win 10 games, and be sitting at home, where the NFC West division winner will be in the playoffs with a 9-7 record.

True but that's the Cowboys fault for completely ignoring what could be a very important position barring the unforseen (back up QB), the least they could have done was sign or draft someone who was a NFL ready QB but they made a mockery of the situation and brought in guys who are just roster fillers.

That what I was thinking last season when they Giants had Jared Lorenzen and Anthony Wright as their backups.

Luckly, they didn't need to use either of them for anything more than garbage time.
