See... doesn't Todd realise, that.... 53 of 57 votes are either 'Dislike them' or 'Hate them', with no one voting that they love them???
Those who say they 'like them' and will be buying a few, a majority of the cases are referring to the mini guitars, rather than the figures...
I wonder if I do this poll periodically around relative boards ie: guitar hero board, video gaming board, general toy board .... if these results will be reflected, and if so - Todd will act on anything.

I don't think we have gotten anything wrong here. I doubt people are jumping on the 'hate it' bandwagon just to be part of the majority opinion, either.
We've gotten plenty of stuff wrong... and if you've been here long enough you'll know what I'm talking about from
Candyman being a surefire hit (it wasn't)
to Leprechaun being a solid, viable candidate for a MM-type line (talk to SOTA about that one)
to the transition to plastic statues (so many were convinced they'd never sell) vs. articulated figures
to Matrix being a huge hit in terms of figures (only for it to fall flat as the 2 sequels came out)
that Military figures and Dragons wouldn't sell (majority said it wouldn't work yet they went on for a few years)
to SP's being a fad that would die the death of Starting Lineups (we were wrong)
to SP's being the death of Spawn (so far, it's less SP's and more a lack of interest in Spawn)
to Halo being a huge mistake and a fad that wouldn't make it past Series 2 (that's right, the majority of expressed opinions last year was exactly that and now even some of its largest critics from last year are buying in)
and then there's the stuff we were right about (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Wallace and Grommit, LOST, Alien and Predator, Terminator, that Video Games were viable again)
and yeah, to be honest there are a lot of people who do express negative opinions about all kinds of lines and then end up buying them a few times and then continuing with the line. it was done with MM's, it was done with the Monsters series, Aliens and Preds, it was done with Halo. plently of boardies have been plenty negative and followed the majority opinion simply because they were truly undecided and since so many others think it will fail that they're swayed towards the negative side. there's a lot to be said about such negativity.
granted, this is one of those very lopsided negative responses but it does make me wonder whether it would be as negative if this weren't the scapegoat line for the people who are upset about Spawn's hiatus and about the cancellation of the Fantasy lines.
in the past, these types of responses were also tempered with a significant amount of apathy. and this poll isn't designed to collect that apathy. there is not middle ground that says I don't care one way or the other and I probably won't buy any. the only option in this poll that is remotely close is the one that skews negative because you don't like the line, but you might buy one of the figures. dislike and don't care aren't the same.
besides, this is only one question that you need to ask among a bank of them.
Will you buy it? Yes, Probably Yes, Don't Know, Don't Care, Probably No, No
Why will / won't you? Explanation
Do you think they will sell? Yes, Probably Yes, Don't Know, Don't Care, Probably No, No
Why don't you think they will / won't sell? Explanation
those 4 questions together would say a lot more than a single poll asking skewed questions and I truthfully don't put much faith in skewed questionaires that obviously are shooting towards a conclusion based on their construction whether it's knowingly or unknowingly intended.
and I certainly wouldn't put much faith in any of it unless I was able to put a measure on the diversity of the sample population

That makes sense. This line is getting the negative reaction it has because most of the fans are just upset about the cancellation of Spawn and Fantasy. Wow, I thought it would be because these actually look like painted s***, there's never been a demand for GH figures, oh and did I mention they look like painted s*** already? C'mon dude. That's just dumb. I think buyers (more than ever) are quite critical of what they want to spend their money on. Also, I've been here long enough to see all the yays and nays anytime a new line or series comes into play and i cannot recall a line having such a negative response off the bat than this. And for the record, I do not buff off this line because I am upset about the cancellations TMP has decided on. I could care less. I initially I pay for what I like & want:).

And for the record, I do not buff off this line because I am upset about the cancellations TMP has decided on. I could care less. I initially I pay for what I like & want:).
I'm not saying that it's a high quality line and that there aren't a strong number of people who are highly critical of it for the right reasons. I'm not saying that everyone who's disatisfied with the GH figures are angry because of the Spawn hiatus and the Fantasy cancellation but if you do recall the reaction not that many months ago during the GH announcement you'll understand my comment about the scapegoating.
But given all of the negative slant and the perception of the figures before a single one was shown, I can't be convinced that the data is accurate. I'm not saying that it's wrong or that there really isn't this much negativity based on the product itself. all I'm saying is that I have reason to doubt and I see areas where biases may be affecting the trending and giving it a more negative appearance than really exists.
Does that mean I'm saying it will turn positive? No. I'm fairly certain it's going to come up negative, just not as negative as the results are showing. And that doesn't mean I think it will drop 10 percentage points, either. I'm simply confident that it's not a black and white issue. Like I said, I think there's a lot of apathy lumped in with the dislike column and dislike is not the same thing as don't care.
We can see from many of the comments that this is the case. So when trying to use this data as an argument against GH figures, you need to be conscious of how the polling is actually skewing.
and I also think that there are those who haven't made up their mind yet. I don't know if they are a significant group, but they have no real reason to speak up to be honest.
is that a better explanation?
tatoman2525
10-07-2008, 07:21 AM
I understand your POV, I just have a hard time believing that this line is getting the heat it is because people are pissed about the cancellation of all other much worthier items. Although it seems like a logical theory, we cannot escape the fact that these figures just look bad and the interest level is overwhelmingly nonexistent. There will be that small percentage that will probably bite the bait on this line but for the most part, people just aren't eating these up for the simple fact that the figs look horrible and the line does not transition well into action figures, they way Halo has done. Not all games will produce great figures. This was a disaster right when the license was announced, before the figures were even unvailed.
Avatar_of_Chaos
10-07-2008, 08:03 AM
I think some of it is definately coming from the cancellations... hell even Halo has taken heat for the cancellations among other things. some of it for the impression that it's killed the rest of the year's lineup, some for the fans its bringing in and some for other reasons
the comment "they cancelled BladeHunters for this?" was used and echoed by many before the product was ever shown. More so with Guitar Hero than with Call of Duty. so for a lot of people, this hasn't and won't be able the quality of the figures. and a lot of those people didn't even know there were in-game characters to make figures of to begin with. but it definately got more negative once the protos were shown without a doubt. it's worth questioning rather than taking it at face value and not probing the information.
you're right, not all games will lead to great figures. I'm not a huge fan of this idea from a sculpting standpoint and to be honest my interest is in only in a very select group of characters, and Metalhead is the one I'd like more than the others because... well... he's a robot with a dome or TV for a head.

I also think that most McFarlane collectors for years have had great products made available (for the most part) and a broader variety. We have been accustomed to expect nothing but the best from TMP, therefore most of us have become very critical on lines that do not meet our expectations:o Also, the variety of products has taken a major hit recently, as well. While the economy is taking a major hit, companies are are cutting back (production being a major area), which is understandable for a business to stay afloat. Yet it seems that in the past we had a greater variety available for most of us to remain loyal buyers of TMP products.
It all started with Spawn, then Wetworks, Youngbloods, SP's, Movie Maniacs, and so forth. Little by little, plenty of these lines (some being great, some being mediocre, & some paving solid ground) began to diminish into the action figure graveyard. Of course, reasoning for cancellation on some of these varied greatly. Also, other lines were brought out to compensate the loss for those cancelled (Dragons, Conan, Monsters, etc.)
Lately, we seem to be getting stuck with Sp's, Halo, and lines such as GH. I would throw Call of Duty in the mix, but I think TMP played it cool in order to continue their Military line just to get it on Walmart's shelf;) After unveiling some very decent lines with great potential for those that are not anal about gaming, they decided to cancel most only to replace it with something like GH. Of course it angers most of the collectors who are expecting something out of one of their top prefered companies, especially when they are replacing multiple lines of decent products to give us one that is absolutely aweful. For this reason, I can see why people have not embraced GH. But the truth of the matter is, this line is just not good. Yeah, it adds to the equation that the majority of Spawn and Fantasy collector's are pissed and are even more critical, but overall they look cheap, they're uninteresting, and most of all, hilarious (no offense OCELOT;):D)
Just look at the reaction we got from SpawnFan1
