So heres the story. I have been selling some of my collection on ebay. One of the figures I was selling was a loose DC Direct Alex Ross Joker figure. I sold it to a guy ending bid was $33 and then $8 for shipping. He paid through Paypal and I shipped it out. He got the figure and left positive feedback on my ebay account but days later files a Paypal Claim stating that the arm had broke and it looked as though it had been glued to cover it up and since I didnt state that in the auction he was asking for a $20 refund because the figure was "not as described" in auction.
Now, so ok? I bought the figure loose from a friend of mine way back when the that series had come out. I have had him displayed in my collection, NOT ONCE did his arm fall off or break in my care, so I explained this to him and I also put out there that I think this is just a scam for him to get a free figure or a figure much cheaper than what he is worth. I told him that if he is truly not happy with the item that he can send it back and I will give him a full refund.
So now he responds that he wants at least the shipping cost ($8) to be refunded. He also says hes been looking for this figure for a long time and intends on keeping the figure since he can fix the arm....
So what do you guys think? Is he trying to screw me out of the money he already paid or what? I already closed the case by stating I will grant a full refund once the item is returned to me.
Personally I think the guy is lying and trying to get his money back and keep the figure...

have him take a picture to prove. of course have him tag it with a hand written tag w/ date.

How do I do that if I already agreed to refund if I get the item back?
Thats the only way I figured made sense, was to ask for the figure back, that way he would have to send it if he was to get his money back. If he doesnt send it then no refund.

The new ebay feedback policy for buyers are allowing them to abuse the system now. I am seeing more and more sellers getting screwed because of this. It's a sad thing to see good folks getting screwed over because of this!

But since I bought it from a friend loose then I cant be 100% sure. What I did was say I would refund him if the figure is returned to me. This is my first claim against me so I dont know how this works. Did I make the right decision?
No you did the right thing. you wanted to help a buyer but i think the buyer is being a Ass.

Yeah, thats what I was worried about. Him sending me something completely different than the figure itself. Is there any way around that?
Item not as described is a black hole for sellers. There's no way around it unless the buyer claims it's fake where the buyer must get an authenticator to provide a signed document which can be difficult. By sounds of it, you played it as best as you can.
I believe if you actually closed the claim, he must send it back and provide a delivery confirmation to PayPal if you deny receiving it. By sounds of it, he doesn't want to send it back so you're in the clear. If he does, you don't need to refund return shipping from my understanding. Only hope he doesn't mail you a rock with a delivery confirmation.

ask for pics... the real red flag here is that he claims he can fix the figure so why doesn't he just do that since he's been looking for the figure for a long time as he claims

I understand that I could grant his $8 back refund, but the figure is worth more. Its worth more than what it sold for imo. I think the guy is just trying to get a HTF figure for cheap. And in that case I asked him to return the figure if hes unhappy with what he got (broken or not.)

EXACTLY! If he can fix it and it doesnt effect the figure when it being displayed, whats the big deal? That is if the thing is even broken! And how he claims he wants to keep the figure. Of course he does!..... lol

So now the guy has sent me an email stating that he is going to keep the figure. Damage and all. So He should be closing that dispute then....

Stand your ground and do not refund his money...if he wins the PayPal claim, he would be required to send the figure back to you to get his money back. Most buyers, in my experience (because several have tried this crap with me as well), will not ship the figure back...they were just trying to sucker you into giving them a refund for the figure so they could get it for less than they paid.

If he does carry on with a claim, and you end up having to refund it & get the fig back, I say snap a leg off ( if the arms already broken, why not?) and file a claim against him for the money back, claiming he broke it. ;)

LOL...No ****...but from the sounds of it the guy is pretty adamant to keeping the figure. We will see....He has till the 23rd to pot the DC number to Paypal.

Yeah I got screwed by a deadbeat bidder a few days ago. Sold my ML ares BAF for $81, Waited for payment for about 3 days and nothing. Then I decide to contact him and see when he is gonna pay only to find out that he is no longer a registered user with ebay. I mean damn don't bite off more than you can chew ya know....If you can't afford it DO NOT BID! It's that simple.
