I was watching a show on History channel, and they were trying to find giant spiders, because there have been numerous reports of giant tarantulas in the area, supposedly killing small dogs in teh area. A local in the Amazon said a large spider killed and dragged a small dog into the forest.

What would you rather have?

A giant spider that eats house pests?

OR

A giant Silver Fish that eats everything in your house?

Just remember that an icky spider is eating a really icky cackroach or an annoying silverfish for dinner instead of destroying your house and possessions, spreading diseases. ;)

They gave that show late last night. I think those people were exaggerating, though.

yea, more than likely. if there were arachnids that large still around we would more than likely find evidence of them.

Awesome ! I'd freak out if I saw such a big spider in our house/ garden/etc., but I wouldn't kill it for sure. I'd take some photos, catch it alive and let it free somewhere else.
Killing those animals makes no sense at all. It's life after all.

Mantises are cool but I am no fan of spiders.

I found this guy or gal in our front yard, I'd say maybe 6 or 7 inches long:

Yes.

These things were all over the property my uncle used to own when I was a kid.

You know how scientists say that spider's web is stronger than steel? Well with THESE thing's webs, you get to truly understand it.

I threw a tree branch as thick as my arm into a web, and it just hung there.

Didn't break a single thread in the web.

The spiders too are half as wide as a fully outstretched adult hand.

...and yes, Australia IS the realm of real nightmare creatures. :p

I've had that happen to me, but fortunately, the spider wasn't nearly as big as that bird-eating spider. I would seriously **** a load of bricks if something that huge fell on me.

I thought so too... that's caused by the light somehow, if you see them at night the eyes are entirely black.
