I don't get why people care if other people vote, or make it a point to tell them to do so. Why don't you just cast your own ballot and be done with it?

Yup.
Don't exactly know how the process works since last time I voted was the presidential election 4 years ago. That was also my first time to vote.
This year my mom and dad's voting. They're both registered. My dad just didn't get his voter's card. Like I said, I'm not sure of the process so I'm not sure if you really need your voter's card to be able to vote.
I'll just tell my dad to go with my mom with his license.

Obama will probably win, that or every red neck will vote for coughPalincough.... i hate Palin, i hoped it would give good light on alaska, Yet, she is ******ed there, she cant even tell what Newspaper she reads, i read a damn paper Every frickin morning! LOL :D"Vote for McCain cause she's hot.":D That's frickin' stupid!
There was a history class this one time and everyone was heatedly talking about how they hated big corporations and the upper middle class.
One guy, a really jock looking guy, stood up and said "How about we take all of the big corporations and every single so-called "hard working" non middle-class tax payer and ship them to another country or the Sun. That way they can stop controlling everything. America would finally achieve greatness."
The whole room got real quiet for a second, then somebody said "Dip*****" from the back of the room.
"I don't think that would work", said somebody else.
"There is nothing more selfish than somebody that thinks they should keep most of the money they work for. I can't remember if Obama said this or McCain said this",said the jock.
The room gets really loud now and the jock is getting getting it from everyone. He holds up his arms and waits for the screaming to stop. After a few minutes the noise dies down, but not completely.
When it gets quiet enough he opens up his jacket to reveal an internet address printed on his shirt.
"Now that I have your attention, do you think you can go to this website and buy my custom t-shirts?"
:D That guy had a pretty good angle to get people to look at him.

Because Americans have died to give us and preserve that right. It's the least we can do to pay them back.
Americans died so I could vote, eh? Just.... when was that, exactly?
When was the last time an american died so that you or I could put a pen to paper? Can you single out a date or a name? Have our voting rights been in danger since.... oh, I dunno.... 1776?
Soldiers die to protect the investments of our elected official's lobbyists and to prolong America's dominance over other nations of people and usurp their resources so that we can sustain the lifestyle we think we're entitled to while half the world starves. Soldiers die for these things because they are promised good pay and "education", and the kids who enlist most often come from situations where they would not receive either otherwise.
That is why we fight. Our vote is not in jeopardy.
I'm not singling anyone out, but if you intend to vote, you should make sure you're educated on the matter. And for all it's power and aggression, this country does not pride itself on education.
Voting's not why soldiers die. Soldiers dying is why we should vote.

It could be argued that for everyone who is not pasty white there have been many well known americans who have died recently for their right to vote, but I digress.
Although secretly I have to admit that I'm of the opinion that if it takes something like an online forum post or a poster to convince a person to vote I'm not sure that I want them to be voting in the first place.

Kind of an upsetting statement. I would say that there is a certain symbolic importance attached to the right to vote and technically the first election didn't happen in 1776, that's just when we declared independence from Britain the first election was in 1789. I'd say if you're gonna be breaking things down to semantics you should try to be specific.
The war of 1812 could be considered a threat as that war actually occurred in the US (partially) and had we not finally gotten off our asses and gotten into WWII (which is a shocking story in and of itself) the threat could have been pretty real. Had D-Day not succeeded history could have been VERY different.
Your statement on why soldiers die now is true enough, but I feel like it takes away from the actual and symbolic sacrifices that people have made in the name of our country.

I am not voting, but just to point this out, my reasons are good.
1: President- Personal reasons. Don't support a super majority, and don't support McCain. Catch 22.
Also, I am a college student, registered in the town my college is in. I do not feel right voting on things here, because I will be gone in a year. That is half the ballot right there.
I suppose I could vote for out Reps, Govenor, and the such. I honestly have not been following it enough to make an informed decision. I am not going to lose sleep over it.
If voting was a law. then people wouldn't care any more than they do now. It would be a show up to not get fined sort of deal. Honestly, I don't think I would appreciate being forced to exercise a right.

The rest is a copout and I disagree, but it's your choice. No worries.
As for the part I left, I also disagree. Being required to do something demands at least a little cognizance to be exercised. It might start with a lot of people as a compulsory act without thought, but I guarantee you it'd become a damn important thing to the great majority of them before long.

I think that not voting could be used as a vote and/or protest so making it a law could be a problem, but I think that honestly people who won't at least take the time to write in their vote for someone should just be ashamed. If you have a legitimate real reason, fine, but if you're just, "I can't be bothered, I don't have time, etc. etc." that's pretty lame. You get ONE chance to affect the way this country operates USE IT!

That's the beauty of a free country, my friend. We're not forced to do anything that we really don't want to do.
Whether people decide to vote or not, it's their choice. Should they? Absolutely. You can argue the yays and nays regarding voting, but you really have no place for an opinion if you do not excercise your right, when the aftermath of the election arrives. I just hope we get it right, regardless who wins. After the last couple of elections other countries and people from other countries (like our beloved aussie here) see us as a country that cannot even get an election done without a circus act. Then we have to sit here and listen to this type of s***.

America won tonight, not just Barack Obama. Republicans might not realize it yet, but they won too. Electoral defeat is a tough cookie to swallow (I'm a Democrat, so I know), but the man we elected tonight pledges to be President of the UNITED States of America, not just of the people who voted for him. That's going to be a refreshing change.
Good night, nation. We did good.:)

Then we have to sit here and listen to this type of s***.
lol oh well i think the right one won. :D
there was a great radio program on today about the differences between our two countries' electoral systems, and the correspondents from the US were saying how complicated and convoluted the system is over there, and how its easy to find yourself waiting hours and hours to vote, and each state has a different system and some of them are ridiculous.
here it takes about 30 mins to vote, and its soo damn easy - u just waltz in, show sufficient ID and put a mark on a piece of paper. in fact u can even do it by mail these days, and that means u dont have to go out on the day with the crowds. its great!!
