View Full Version : Official "Guys Who Won't Sign Certain Things" thread

So, the idea for this thread is to be a running Q&A on what certain athletes will and won't autograph.
For instance:
- Whitey Ford usually won't sign anything "Chairman of the Board"
- Bo Jackson won't sign any Tampa Bay Buccaneers merchandise
- Steve Young is usually leery about signing Bucs merchandise, and it has been rumored he won't sign anything already signed by his former Bucs coach, Ray Perkins.
- Lou Holtz won't sign anything that has already been signed by the guy who proceeded him at Notre Dame (and vice versa).
----
Now a question, does Terrell Owens still sign 49ers memorabilia?

That's really strange. I have seen Portis at several signings and he has always been cool about signing UM stuff.
Back in the day I had a pic of Charlie ward getting lit up in a game against Miami, and believe it or not he wouldn't sign it.

Sterling Sharpe wouldn't sign anything for free. I walked up to him at training camp when I was twelve and he basically told me to go take a hike. Jerk.
Gave me more time to get autographs from Mark Brunell, Ty Detmer, George Teague and some guy named Reggie White.

You get quite a few baseball player's now refusing to sweetspot baseballs. They save that for paid signings.
I've heard now Curtis Granderson who is a great signer. Signs his IP stuff in very corner of stuff. I believe he is Locker Room Memorbilia exclusive now. That might be part of his deal.
Then you have guys who will find the worst spot to sign pictures when they are signing for free. I've seen people get Oveckin stuff and he signs in the darkest area. Same for Roy Oswalt. So really can't even see the auto that well.

Is this the show coming up in Chicago? I heard he was going to sign it, then heard he wasn't. Does that photo then have a special jacked up rate for him to sign it then.

Really? The Sun Times show coming up says he will NOT sign them. That's strange that he would sign at one show and not another. I wonder if it has to do with the promoter.

I was told that Jonathan Toews WILL NOT sign anything that Patrick Kane signed before him.
He'll sign photos of both of them, but only if he's first. Kinda weird.

Similar to the Ventura/Ryan photo. The one where Frank Gifford is laid out cold, I don't think he signs that one.

One that is obvious, Joe Theismann will not sign photos of him getting his leg broken by LT, a guy at a Golf Tournament brought one up to him a few years ago and Joe started freaking out, he said he had never seen it before and turned away and left the area.
Not that I blame him.

As far as I know, Lawrence Taylor will not sign such pics either.
Gary Carter will not sign baseball cards. Something to do with a contract he has with the Leukemia Society of America.
I can understand Taylor and Theismann not signing that particular pic. However, if Bill Buckner will sign pics of his error (I have one), then there is no reason why anyone else would have things they won't sign.

Yeah, it is all about the money... both ways. I would get a little frustrated too see a vast majority of my "free" signatures turning up on ebay. Not to defend the athletes since they should make enough all ready to be happy but I can see their point a little bit.

That's changed. Both Theismann and LT signed the photo at the National this year. I saw it done in the back room. If I remember right Joe inscribed it "Ouch" and LT inscribed it "Gotcha". They have to be out on the market. Check Ebay.

I think it goes for dealers. Well, I got this tidbit from a dealer. So, maybe Toews knows the value of multi signed items and won't sign for dealers. I thought it was weird too.

Promoters and player's are smart. If it is known a guy won't sign a certain item. The promoter can try and get a deal in place for there show to have them sign it and player can $ in doing this. But if all of a sudden if said player starts signing the stuff they wouldn't in the past, no premium would be put on it.
Someday Bartman will be able to get the price way higher if he ever comes out in the public. I could see him appear at National and get 100 K to do a one photo signing. He should get paid for the crap he has put up with.

He should but he won't. He just wants to be left alone. He's not looking for any money.

No. Back in the day there wasn't an easy way to take a signed piece and resell it for a profit. I don't blame athletes for not signing certains things or for certain people. You even have collectors making their kids to the leg work and then turn around and sell it on Ebay.
