that and several other guys had injuries that shortened seasons that would have beaten out Pedroia easily (A-Rod, Quentin, and Kinsler come to mind)

he led in a few categories, had some hot streaks, finished .02 points behind the batting champ just wasn't a ball crusher like most MVP candidates and winners typically are...

Exactly...this is similar to Steve Nash winning the MVP over Shaq. The guys who vote on these awards are short white guys...they stick with their own whenever there is even a remotely defensible position to do so.

Pedroia did everything this year. No he wasnt at the top on RBI's or HR's but he had good stats in those. He also stole 20 bases. Led the league in hits. 2nd in average by a very slim margin. Gold Glove at 2B. Led his team into the playoffs.
Noone else in the MVP race can say they put the stats Pedroia did across the board. They may have had better power numbers but they didnt do everything else AND play gold glove defense.

Wait, so now defense matters for MVP? I thought Red Sox fans thought that Ortiz should have won MVP a couple years ago because playing defense didn't matter that much.

As a Yankees fan, I had the opportunity to see Pedroia quite a bit, and even I have to admit, it's well deserved. He's a hell of a ballplayer, and maybe it's time we started to look at a player's overall numbers and contributions, than just his power numbers when considering his MVP status.
And I agree that Hamilton deserved a lot better than 7th.

some of us admitted a DH shouldn't win MVP over a guy with comparable numbers who played the field.....I agree Arod deserved the MVP that year for similar numbers and the fact that he plays the field over a guy who DHs

I didn't say he didn't deserve it...just that he's fortunate that several other guys didn't get to play a full season for whatever reason. Read into that what you will.

It's pathetic that a Red Sox player won, let alone 2 of them in the top 4....Neither deserved anywhere near MVP and the team would have been fine without either also. if anything the only red sox to win it should have been Manny since the red sox bombed in the playoffs without him and then he literally was the only player to actually show up for Dodgers games and carried the team. Just proves that Baseball is still the most pathetic sport(even worse than the NBA...).

Im not too sure what MVP means. Is it the best player in the league or the best player on the best team in the league??
I dont think Pedroia qualifies for it one way or the other. He clearly wasnt the best player in the AL, that to me would be K-Rod, and the Red Sox weren't the best team in their division let alone the entire AL. Hands down it should have went to K-Rod, he broke the record for most saves in a season. He was the definition of shut down closer. I think he was slighted, and for the sake of arguin im neither a Red Sox, Yankees and or Angels fan

I feel that argument. I'd say by far and away Pedroia was the most deserving position player though.

Look at their stats when Kinsler got hurt. He was beating the hell out of Pedroia in most of them. It doesn't even look like Pedroia was THAT much better than him with Kinsler missing 6 weeks (only 16 more runs and 12 RBI in 36 more games, for example). Pedroia is better defensively, but Kinsler is better offensively, and the numbers would have probably shown it if Kinsler didn't get the hernia. That's obviously not Pedroia's fault, but it's easy to see that Kinsler could very well be the better player of the two.
Here are the numbers as of August 17th when Kinsler got hurt:
Kinsler .319/.375/.517 102R 18HR 71RBI 26SB
Pedroia .321/.363/.472 91R 12HR 62RBI 12SB
The numbers speak for themselves.

ROY to MVP in back to back years. Not to shabby.

Pedroia wasn't even the MVP of his own team, Youkilis was way more important, and he didn't it all year long, at different defensive pos., and he won a GG last year, so it's not like he's crappy fielder.
Kinsler was much better until he got hurt, but since his team isn't Boston or NY, people seem to think Pedroia was better.
Congrats to Dustin!!

I love Youk as well but after Manny got traded Pedroia helped carry the Sox to the post season where Kinsler and the Rangers never made it.

I think we all know why the Rangers didn't make the playoffs and it had zero to do with anything Kinsler failed to bring to the table. Citing team performance when deciding who is the "better" player always seemed like the ultimate fallback defense for the inferior player.
Whether or not you want to say Pedroia is "more valuable" to his team, I think it's easy to see how the numbers support Kinsler being the "better" player.

Fred Lynn and Ichiro won the MVP and ROY in the same year. It's not exactly unprecedented.
Who cares if he carried his team to the playoffs? Did Pujols carry his team to the playoffs? Oh no, he had a great season at the plate. Pedroia did not, he had a good season at the plate. Youkilis, Morneau, Quentin, Hamilton, Longoria, Kinsler, Mauer all had better seasons at the plate. Mauer won his second consecutive batting title, and his team was in it until the very last day.
Face it, this award was a joke. They gave it to a little guy who had a decent season at second base, who played for one of the most popular teams.

There was no clear cut player who was head and shoulders better than any other.Pedroia had an incredible year fielding and hitting but i cannot say that he was unanimously the best player in the AL.The writers who voted thought he was the AL MVP and thats really all that matters. He helped carry his team after Manny left and if not for that the Sox might have not made the post season.I admit i am bias since i am a Sox fan and watch him on TV every night. You mention him playing on a popoular team which doesnt mean much since a Sox player has not won a MVP since 95.(Mo Vaughn) Also i would not put Ichiro as a true Rookie and would be interested in knowing how many times in the history of baseball that a player has won ROY and MVP in consecutive seasons?
