View Full Version : "Elm Street" is going the 'serious' route.

And I for one, could not be happier. I always thought the first movie was the best and the minute Freddy started becoming the comedian that killed you, the series really went downhill.

I loved the comedian aspect of the later movies, but I would be all for a new serious take and just keep it scary.

I agree with you, Holeman. The first movie was great. The whole concept of the movie was awesome. The following movies were just dumb, though. It was more of a bloody comedy show than a horror flick. I'm glad that both Friday the 13th and the Elm Street movies will be going back to their origin of horror and not the bull**** or scary-funny movies that they became a long time ago.

Agreed 100% the first film was the best. I hope that Billy Bob Thornton is NOT. I REPEAT NOT CAST as Fred Krueger.....

Hard to get too serious when someone is killing you in your dreams. I'm up for seeing where they go with it though.

Fan of the serious angle. I'm not that much of a fan of jokes and one-liners coupled with murder.

Who are they casting as Freddy?

I seriously doubt it's Billy Bob Thornton.

Anyone know?? Holeman?

Wonder if Kane Hodder is in the run.

Serious could be good, as long as this movie is nothing like A New Nightmare.

I think the first one was pretty damn good...and scary when I watched it as a kid...

I saw them all through the years, and while some of the comedy made me laugh at the time....I always enjoyed the first one the best....

Depending on who they get to play freddy I would probably be down....after seeing the new 13th trailers I have more hope for these franchises

I like Ben Foster. But I don't think he could pull it off he was good in 30 Days of night and he played the angry skinhead role on My Name as Earl but if they want to scare people with Fred Krueger. I don't know who but he better be very frightening and more imposing than Ben Foster. That being said if they were to cast him I woudnt be not happy.

I watched the second one like 3 weeks ago and it was straight up horrid. If this retake of the series is going to focus more on gore, than it should be MUCH better

DragonVileHater
12-12-2008, 03:27 PM
why? Just curious....

Because, first of all he kinda resembles a child killer already. If you look at a pic of him and imagine burn scars and a fedora, that helps a lot too.

Then, I imagine him in all those greaseball rolls he's played so far (i.e. Bad Santa, Ice Harvest, Bad News Bears), but this time acting serious and scary. I can see it.

To me he's a little too young and small. He would be great acting-wise, though. Watch Hostage and imagine he's Freddy.

wasn't Freddy a pedophile originally?

wasn't Freddy a pedophile originally?

Why yes! Ever see that episode of "Freddy's Nightmares"? He was a pedo and a child killer. He also had a glove for every occasion! I'd like the see more of that line of thinking. No more spectral, super-turds flying around his head offering him immortality and all that. He's just a hatred and evil that just won't die. He kills you in your dreams.

That's a ****ing scary idea. A scary idea that has been undermined by lots of worthless, comedy, horror-lite sequels.

Robert Englund's take on Freddy died the minute "Freddy vs. Jason" came out. That Freddy is dead forever and thank god. Much like everything else about the 80's, it needed to be killed.

This new Freddy has the chance to take Wes Craven's idea and make a horror series that is truly frightening! The kind of movie that makes you sleep with the lights on.

I really hope they don't **** it up.

I agree with you Hole when you say that Englund needs to go, it would be beyond awesome to see a fresh portrayal of Freddy and he's been stale in the role for a long time now. But, I disagree with you when you say that they need to get rid of that comedic side of Freddy, isn't that part of his appeal? Completely getting rid of that and making the character nothing but a robotic killer hurts the character imo.

Frankly, I always thought his personality and sick sense of humour were what made him such an iconic character and really allowed him to stand out when compared with the guys from the other really popular franchises (Jason, Leatherface, Michael Myers, etc. who are just bleeping robots when it comes down to it) but I guess you don't see it that way.

What? the FvsJ Freddy was quite perfect if you ask me.

The "Vs." movie is what happens when two characters are so worn out, so creatively bankrupt that the only way to milk them anymore is to slap them together and let them fight. "FvJ" was the only Freddy or Jason flick that I hated outright. It was completely devoid of any imagination.

Englund's Freddy has had a good run, it's time to let someone else take over the role.

There's nothing that says he can't be funny. I just don't want the stupid ****ing cartoon we had in every movie after part 3.

The first movie is the best. He wasn't a 'robotic' killer in that one. He was genuinely frightening. That's what I want.

I guess I'm just one of the fans who likes anything with Freddy Krueger. But, I really did like FvsJ, I thought it was a great horror movie.

But like I said, I'm a hardcore Freddy fan, so I like any movie with him in it.

But I do agree that change does need to come.

I'm about to watch Wes Craven's New Nightmare for the first time.Picked it up at the pawn shop for a buck fifty today.

I've always been a fan of the NOES series, and I'm not sure why I never saw this movie before, but I've been on an Elm Street kick since Halloween a few weeks ago and have been wanting to check it out.

I'd love to see a more serious minded take on the series though, even if it means Englund is done with the role. .

I think he's too expensive of an actor to do this. The Platinum Dunes remakes casts lesser known actors. Example... Andrew Bryniarski as Leatherface. Derek Mears as Jason Voorhees. Most people don't know who these guys are(horror fans like myself know these guys.

I'd like them to get an actor who can bring fear and make the Freddy character scary again.

The Original A Nightmare On Elm Street is a great horror film. The sequels suck. I still don't get the love that everybody has for part 3 Dream Warriors. The sequels suck all f them.

New Nightmare is mediocre at best. Hopefully they get a guy who has the right build and features to make Freddy Krueger scary instead of a striped sweater wearing joke. :D

Because they fight back! It's an awesome idea. There are people out there who can lucid dream whenever they like because they practice that ****. It was a cool idea. I admit, though, that it may not have been a great movie. But it's okay to like bad movies sometimes.

Ah screw it, Kruegers been done before! Just give me a new, awesome horror flick to love for the next decade or so.
These reboots are starting to make me sad. Why don't the studios save a buck and just re-release classic movies that are already made and loved by millions? I hate it when they "MTVenise" a franchise to turn a dollar. F--- Michael Bay as a producer of horror films.

The concept is so scary, don't fall asleep or you'll die.

Right? I think Hollywood believes that all ideas have been exhausted. Now, the only hope is to remake everything. I rue the day when we'll see a remake of a remake.
