It's been a while since there has been a non CGI animated film. Do you think CG animated films will run it's course and tradional will return or the two will mesh to become something entirely new?

it would be nice... i think... I'm not 100% sure but I believe it takes them longer to hand draw each cell than to do the animation... i could be totally wrong

I had this conversation with a coworker a while ago and he also told me about the Disney film that they are going to release. There was Enchanted....which seemed like they were testing the waters for classically animated films.

John Lassater has stated that the last few traditionally animated Disney films didn't fail because they were hand drawn but because they were bad films, and likewise that Pixar movies aren't successfull because of just the computer animation but because they are good movies. He has talked about bringing a new attitude to the traditional animation studio at Disney and focusing on making quality movies and not pushing out low quality sequels to generate easy cash. The Pixar documentary on the Wall-E DVD was very informative, and provides some insight into his passion for animation and what he hopes to accomplish at Disney.

As a fan of animated Disney movies from my childhood, I am excited about the potential and vision that Lasseter has brought to Disney.

Take it from someone who's done both: it's much harder to do animation the old-fashioned way. The actual animation of a 3D character is a lot easier than people think it is.
Unless you do it by doing just keyframes and getting an Asian company to do the fill-ins... but if you're doing all the work yourself, yes, hand-drawn animation, or cell animation, is much more labor intensive.

I don't think it has died, I still watch traditional all the time. I don't like computer animation much. I even took a course on both, I did much better in traditional.

agreed with the above, if Pixar came into the scene doing hand drawn then it would be a different story because its been their successful stories moreso then the animation but i imagine it doesnt hurt. I mean look at the disney movies they did in 3D that arent as successful as Pixar.

When is that hand drawn new ultra violent GI Joe animated film coming out? That looked amazing from the bit of leaked animation I saw.
Disney is still doing cell animated movies but they have all been direct to DVD. Frog Prince is the first they have put the effort into making it worthy of the big screen. Bambi 2 was actually not that bad to be honest and one of their better direct to DVD efforts.

I've been thinking about that recently, was flipping through the backs of some old spawn comics and they were talking about the award winning McF productions animated music videos and HBO Spawn.
And just wish someday detailed animation will come back.
All the saturday morning toons look like Flash Animation and you can tell nobody actually hand draws the characters anymore. The draw the characters once and just recycle for finance purposes.

for my 3d work, animation, and character designs....
wondering if anyone had any ideas/cheap solutions for this kinda thing.
I learned how to create my own flash slide shows and stuff in school, but I really want this to look professional. Anyone know where I can get some templates or something and a cheap way to host the site?
Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Its seems that american studios dont want to spend money in traditionnal cartoon, but japanese studios always bring great 2D movies.
They are the best in the business so im not afraid.

They'll probably find a way to draw it on a computer, while it looks like traditional animation. If they haven't done that already.

You are correct. I actually went to school for 3-D animation and the cell animation or 2-D process is much more extensive. Just think, for one second of film, it takes approximately 30 - 34 drawings or cells. Multiple those 30 drawings per second by 90 minutes or so and you should get an idea of how extensive the work is. Although there are large amounts of animator involved in 3-D, many more are needed for a 2-D animated film.
Although 3-D animation looks amazing, the true artistic factor is minimal in comparison to 2-D or traditional animation, which is why I like traditional animation so much more.

I heard at one point that they were working on doing another Heavy Metal movie. I hope it redeems them for that god awful Heavy Metal 2000.

Imagine what they could accomplish if they made a game like Earthworm Jim with next-gen engines! Still animated the same and still a side-scroller. But with no limits for the gameplay.

I watched a Macross movie where they tried to marry the 2 together and I hated it. The CGI looks too 3D and threw it off. Just looked fake.
