View Full Version : NOOOOO! My action figure income may be stopping very soon...

After nearly 5 years of consistent plasma selling, I think my body is starting to reject it. They've been having trouble getting a good stick for several weeks. I lost some blood last week because for some reason I couldn't take the return (if you have two red blood cell losses within 8 weeks you get deferred for 8 weeks). Then on Wednesday, I REALLY wouldn't take the return as the blood started leaking out of my arm almost faster than the phlebotomists could shut off my machine and soak up the blood. This led to a "reaction," which basically means I got really dizzy and sweaty and my vision was really blurry and had to have an ice pack on my neck as I tried not to pass out while they unhooked my left arm, put the blood back into my right arm, and simultaneously took my vitals. I wasn't really in any danger--it just sucked. So I'm going to give it one more shot on Monday, but if it doesn't go well, I'm retiring. So I'll potentially be income-less for about 4 months. Granted, this is JUST my action figure and statue income...but still, that'll suck.

you mean to tell me that you make your figure money by selling your plamsa?
I'm O-neg... I could make a fortune
that really does suck though. Do they have any idea why? are you ok?

How much do they pay you for plasma?

Blood type means nothing for plasma--you get to keep your blood cells.
I bank $60-70 a week plus occasional bonuses.

I always seemed to get really sick after giving blood, so I haven't done it in a while. I guess that's the problem if you're overworked and underslept.

I would like to try this.
What are the requirements for giving away this delicious red-juice of life?
$60 per week doesn't sound too bad. How often do you have to show up to bank that kinda cash?

Twice a week. Be healthy. Don't inject drugs into your body. And several other things (same list of questions for donating blood). If you're not a prostitute or a druggie, you're probably fine. And on some of the questions, you can lie (tattoo/piercing in last 12 months).

i gave blood for a while years ago when i lost my job, it's not a bad way to make extra cash. i couldn't do it now even if i wanted too.i tried a few years ago when i was kinda broke and it turns out that they use citric acid in the saline solution or whatever it is they give you and im allergic. plus i take vicodin occasionally for pain and you need to not take that for a month or so.

AB are universal plasma donors, A are universal platelet donors and O-neg are universal red blood cell donors.
it does make a difference, especially in how often central blood bank will call to remind you to schedule an appointment if you donate or how often another collection facility might encourage you to keep coming in

Too bad I hate needles. :( I gave blood (like a blood drive) last year and the dumb bastard poked through the other side of my vein and my whole arm bruised for about a month. I hated needles before that, but now I don't give/sell blood to anybody. If a family member or friend needed it, ok, but aside from that, no thanks.

Wow... I think it's a brilliant idea, and it's a way to help people out while getting cash for your collection.
Seriously, that's just too freaking awesome. Sorry you're having a bad reaction to it. You may just need to give your system a few weeks to rest. :(

I couldn't do it even if I wanted to. I contracted infectious hepatitis in 1972, and I can't donate blood or the person receiving it gets hepatitis.

truthfully, anytime I've ever donated it's taken about 7 minutes max. then I got a cookie.
I imagine that when you're providing whole blood and are just giving plasma, platelets or double cell that it takes longer, but the important questions is whether they give you a cookie or not

At the place I go, everyone gets paid the same regardless of blood type. They don't care how often you show up--that's up to you. They don't send out encouragement.

Anyone who meets the health requirements. And I donate (sell) twice a week. That's the limit. They don't actually take any blood, just plasma, so you can do it a lot.

It takes about an hour once you get hooked up to the machine. It's roughly 10 cycles of taking blood out, centrifuging it to separate the plasma, mixing the blood with an anti-coagulant, then putting it back in. When you're done, you get saline.

double red cell is similar, but the interval between times you can give is something like 112 days

I've got nothing better to do with all that blood. I figure if my body essentially creates an endless supply of something for which people will pay me, I'd be stupid not to.

Maybe you should wait a week, let your body bounce back, I've never heard of people who normally give all the time having to quit. And actually thats really cool to that you fund your toys that way, talk about blood money.

You mean you can't say the sperm word, that's what they pay you for there, not masturebation, that is one I personally would not do for money, cause then its weird knowing I have kids who I'll never know or see, and I used the money I made to buy toys. With blood or plasma its different. Also there is nothing wrong with not liking needles, its not exactly normal to have metal inside you.

Its more of, I would rather get paid for spankin it, then by getting a needle stuck in me. But I get the whole, kids you don't know thing. Everyone just sees it different.

You likely wouldn't make it passed the initial screening. Most donors don't.

I think I am going to take a week off, but I'm pretty sure the integrity of my vein, coupled with the spot of scar tissue, is just starting to make donating hard--maybe too hard.
Doing a little math, in the past 5 years, I've stabbed my left vein roughly 230 times (give or take several). I think it's tired of being stabbed.

Well, druggies have been known to have to find different veins to shoot up with, stands to reason having plasma taken excessively would have the same effect.

Hey Ed, you're a reverse druggy lol. You put a needle in your body to take stuff *out*, instead of put stuff in, and you get money for doing it, instead of paying money for doing it. :D

I tried donating once to a blood drive when I was in high school, but on the questionnaire asked if I had spent 6 months or more in the British Isles in the late 80s/early 90s. My family lived in London for 6 months in 1990 when my dad was on sabbatical there, so I answered "yes". No blood donating for me, because of the risk of exposure to Mad Cow Disease. The nice lady still gave me a cookie, though.

Same arm or do you alternate, cause maybe you need to switch. But yeah take some time off and wait and let your veins get some time to rebuild.

I avoid using my right because it's off center and hurts a lot. I've only used my right a handful of times when it was necessary. Plus, I don't want two scars. I just had 6 weeks off for winter break--I don't think rebuilding is the main issue.

Me too. I'm afraid of needles. And there's a chance they'd poke a median vein instead of the median cubital vein...
Which is a big ouchie.

I donated blood once in high school, pretty much because it got me out of class for the day. Wasnt all that bad, cept the anti-coagulant stuff on the needle burns like hell. Its been like 5 years since I graduated, but my parents still get monthly phone calls at their house for me from the Red Cross wanting me to donate since they really need my blood type. The thing is, I dont even know what my blood type is, they never told me when I donated. Anybody know which of the types is always in such high demand? I think I remember something from one of the messages about being a "universal donor" or something.

Universal donor is Blood type O, having no antigens (I think).
