It was just a matter of time. They have too much talent to play the way they had been playing.

Yep, and the rangers are heading down the same road...I think Tom Renney's job depends on how the team takes to Avery's return. If he can have the same effect he had before he'll be safe. If not, well, they say you're hired to be fired.

DAY OF DAYS!!!!
This might make me think a God actually exists!!!
My three years of horror are finally over....REJOICE, REJOICE! FOR HE IS GOOD, AND JUST, AND RIGHTEOUS! (and even though he takes far too long to come to see an obvious problem) HIS NAME IS SHERO, AND HE IS A GOOD MAN!

I doubt you would be saying this had they beat the Wings last season.

I agree that the coach was part of the team's problems, however losing the guys they did didn't help the situation either.

It was obvious that something needed to be done. This is just the first step in the process.

I knew this was coming (), but if you check the Penguins thread over the past three years you would see that I have been calling for his head from day 1. I hate the guy and even during the playoffs he was NOTHING to me. good riddance. I am one penguins fan who NEVER gave the guy any word of support because I knew was the highest caliber of S.....well, you know what.
Check the Pens thread if you don't believe me, ask other Pens fans on the board. the man has never heard a glowing review come from my lips.

But, a Cup win changes everything. You may have been saying that for a long time, but no one, even you, knows what you would say had the Pens won the Cup.

Therrien "winning" a cup is a joke....the guy is garbage and frankly, the team did as well as it did last year in SPITE of "Dr. LineJuggle". That arse would need to save the world from Global Warming before I said anything good about him. I was on him during every game the Pens have ever played with him behind the bench. I maintain that my training from Hockey Canada as a minor league hockey coach makes me more qualified to coach the Penguins than him.
A cup win changes nothing....that's overkill to say it....if a guy is ****e he is ****e period. My only hope now is that they don't get some other retread in...some other rejected piece of garbage coach to come in and coach the Pens. Stick with Blysma! Please!
After that all they gotta do is get rid of Gonchar, Whitney and Jordan "Can't believe you passed on Toews" Staal.

Wow that's scary to think their hopes hinge on Sean Avery. They must be desperate.

I would personally like to see them stick with Blysma.....I don't want to see another retread behind the bench.

Retread??? LOL you're joking right? Pat Quinn has been a fairly successful coach in the NHL for many years. Wayne Gretzky respects him........surely that must mean something. Just because he hasn't won a Cup doesn't mean he's garbage. It's not easy to win the Cup you know.

Why are you putting words in my mouth? Did I once say that Quinn was garbage? I said he would be a retread......would he not? Hasn't he coached before? If the answer is yes, then he would be a retread.
I want others to have a chance to coach...am I the only one who is highly disturbed at the coaching carousel that is the NHL?

sorry man but retread is a very negative word in my mind.
Mats_44
02-15-2009, 08:01 PM
and there is coaching carousels in every league. That's how it is. Sometimes chemistry in a dressing room just stops working. Being a coach is about clicking with the personalities. Just because it doesn't work for the team you got fired from that doesn't mean it won't work for the next team you get hired by.
GMs are looking for coaches with experience and a proven resume. That's just the way it is.

oh...didn't mean anything negative at all. Quinn is a great coach in my opinion, but I just want to see some new faces around. My plead to God about not having him hired probably made you think I thought he was horrible though I think he is anything but.

idk, all of these teams instantly blame the coach for their problems, and does it actually work? Something needed to be done, but how about trading for some physical players instead of firing the coach?
seems to be a bandaid on a gaping wound to me...

right,Shero should take some blame on this too.
I would have waited until after the season.

Sometimes it isn't about the coach having bad philosophies or strategy, it comes from the team no longer believing in the coach. From everything I've heard, Therrien was ruthless with the way he treated players that were in this doghouse. Most of all was MAF. If your goalie loses all confidence because the head coach is taking shots at him while he isn't even with the team, you've got a locker room problem.
And since the team is more apt to signing MAF to an extension than trading him, the only other logical solutions were Therrien to change the way he treats people or they can him. Since the team was playing like crap anyways, the solution became obvious.

Exactly. Losing guys like Malone for nothing really has hurt the Pens.

I don't see how anyone could possibly say that Therrien should have been kept around...he was legitimately a bad coach. I'm not placing all the blame on him, I'm just saying he was actually a horrible coach, but plenty of blame lies with Shero for some of his moves, and players ike Whitney, Staal, Satan, Fedotenko, etc for being as "great" as Alex Stojanov. lol
Therrien blows. Hopefully this is the last anyone will have to hear of "Mike" in the NHL.

Therrien comments on canning; predicts playoffs for Penguins
Monday, February 16, 2009
By Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Michel Therrien, fired last night from his post as Penguins coach, cleaned out his office at Mellon Arena this morning but left behind some warm thoughts and a prediction the team's fans might like.
"I truly believe this team will make the playoffs," Therrien said today.
Therrien guided the club to the Stanley Cup final eight months ago at the end of his second full season with the Penguins after being promoted from their minor-league team in December 2005.
But with about two months left in the 2008-09 season, the Penguins are struggling to climb into one of the eight playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
Therrien said he was proud to coach young stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and work for co-owner Mario Lemieux. He praised the Penguins as having "probably the best staff in the National Hockey League."
"I tried to give my best to this franchise," he said. "I've been a Penguin for such a long time. It's a sad day not only for me but for my family."
