View Full Version : Way OT: School Shootings

Well, up until today I had for the most part been one of those that thought like most others. I would think "Odds of a school shooting becoming a reality around where i live is slim to none" Mostly because I live in a really small town, and it just did not really seem likely.
Today at around 11:30 or so were informed some guy is on campus with a gun, so the college is locked down. Apparently he pulled it in the parking lot, and started following the people into some building. So they ran in screaming, which led to the school being locked down. Until the situation was taken care of.
No one was shot.. but its kind of like wow, and im still in shock and disbelief in some ways. Which I should not be, because I am a certified officer here in the state of NC. Been through hours of school shooting scenarios. Know how to handle the situation from the law enforcement aspect of it.
Today when the role was switched.. and i was a student in the classroom.. knowing a gunman is on campus. Knowing I am not armed, and that their is nothing I could do to protect myself or anyone else if needed. Had to be the most helpless feeling i have ever
experienced.
Which brings me to my next thought is why are selective teachers not allowed to carry concealed at schools. Or why are certified officers not allowed to carry at a school. Unless they are the SRO for that school. As long as the person has been through some extensive training and shoot a professional qualification with it, it should be considered.
Anyways.. been stressing over this all day... so just needed to let it out

29 CPS (Chicago public school) kids have died so far since the beginning of the year. I know its not the same thing, but it is still alarming.

i agree certified officers or teachers should be able to carry.
a guy i work with has 2 concealed guns on him at all times and everyone i work with knows it and knows that he does it in case some actual nut comes in a tries to rob the place or do something like that. i mean hey i work a Mercedes dealer so who knows if some guy will come in and pull a gun and demand keys to a new car or something, i like the fact knowing he has trained with SWAT members and he could probably diffuse the situ himself. with that said a trained officer or teacher for that matter in a school should be able to carry to aid in taking care of something like this.
How is the security at the schools where you all live?
I ask that, because I am an off campus coach for the distance runners in track at one of the high schools in town. Everyday I park my truck, and walk right through campus to the track with a backpack while nobody has once questioned me in the 3 months I have been coaching there.

After the incident they tried to beef up security, but really its token security...

The security at the college is a joke.. really.. We have one armed SRO... then a couple old men who ride golf carts around. All they have is cell phones.
The college got the SRO this year, but if they are gonna have security they at least need to be armed. What can a unarmed guard really do? Besides dial 911

I really don't want to sound pessimistic but your head would fall off if you knew how many people (or students) are carrying guns, driving without car insurance, or driving drunk. There is simply nothing that can be done and you can do your best to be preventive but it's really out of your hands. Depressing, right? People suck.

I DON'T agree that teachers should be able to carry, that would just make them targets for people looking to obtain weapons
go in without a weapon, take the person that has a weapon, just because someone's holding a gun doesn't mean they know how to use it, nor does it mean they can protect themselves
and just because YOU don't have a gun doesn't mean you're useless or hopeless or helpless.

anyone who wants to carry concealed in schools should be allowed to do so.

What? If you're licensed to carry a gun, I'm pretty sure that you know how to use it properly and you can protect yourself and others.
Also, you're pretty helpless without a gun. What are you going to do? Deflect the bullets with your hand? It will take police a few minutes to respond. You're screwed until then. Shotgun or pistol >>>>> bare hands and cell phone

You give people with guns too much credit, anyone entering a school with a gun to shoot people without the guns doesn't really have much balls.
And having a license to carry a gun doesn't mean they have a license not to have a panic attack.

I don't think that having weapons in school is the answer to protect people, could just cause more problems. It is something that I've thought about quite a bit over the course of the last six years. You see six years ago, one of my middle school students shot our principal and then himselft in front of a room of 8th graders. It rocked our community completely. At the time, we had a part time SRO, but now have a full time one. My only comment is to keep guns out of school, things only could have been worse if another weapon was in our school that day.

In my district in Utah, I can carry my gun because of my concealed permit. However, I can't use the districts property to store my weapon, ie. my desk or closet, etc....My concealed instructor said, that he doesn't let people know he carries at his day job, because if someone knew that, they might want to take him out first to get rid of the weapons holders. The University of Utah tried to ban concealed permit holders from bringing their weapons on campus. The suit went all the way to the Utah Supreme court where the U of U lost. I have taught middle school and now I'm in a high school. I have always said I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a student if they were shooting at others. But I bet that would take a heavy toll on your mental process if you had t kill a kid, even in those circumstances.
