I am relatively new to the ice hockey goalie scene with roughly 3 years of outdoor pickup experience and I have recently been in the market for some kneepads to wear in my pads. I would also like to replace my thigh blocks with some thigh guards as well.

I tried both the Vaughn VKP7700 Knee & Thigh Guards

And the RBK Pro Knee Protectors
http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-90879101131287_2044_24288308
I noticed the RBKs appear to have a spot to attatch them to the pants, butI have the Itech RX9 pants and can't find anywhere to attatch them.

How well do the kneepads stay on if they aren't attatched to the pants? Also when it comes to the RBKs how much of a difference do the plastic caps make?

Has anyone had any experience with either of these kneepads, or have any suggestions on others.

I really don't have much idea when it comes to these, I just know those were the two I liked the feel of the best when I tried them on, but I was just in store and wearing jeans.

I've only had it happen two or three times luckily, I wear volleyball kneepads so it helps some. I just have issues with the kneepads sliding down or twisting and don't feel like coming in to take off all my equipment just to adjust them.

I also have Itech x-wing pads and they have a massive strap for the knee lock and figured some knee pads would help with the fit.

Get a garter belt.

Or get these. They're bullet proof.

Would a garter belt reach that low? And wouldn't the straps/clips interfere with the pad when I drop down?

I asked about the RBK Premier 2 and the guy at the store I was in said they wouldn't work for anything but a set of RBK pads he showed me. I can't remember the model of the pads though:o I really liked the idea of them though.

Nevermind I just realized how they would never even touch the pad going down.

I started wearing these about 3 months ago and I love them. I trust the protection and they're starting to break in nicely, but they were stiff as hell when I first put them on

Do those cover the thigh as well? Also how is the plastic cap, do you feel it on your knee at all?

To be honest I would prefer Itech to match the rest of my equipment but have pretty much accepted the fact that I will be miss-matching from here out.

i have ccm vector goal pants and they came with knee pads, i just had to use old shoe laces to tie them together.... knee pads make all the difference, you could always take a pair to a seamstress and see if they could sew them into your pants...

I simply took player shin guards and took the bottom part off and kept the knee part, I just use sock tape and attach it to my knee/thigh are. It covers my knee and exposed thigh, and my goalie pants take care of the rest. Removed the thigh boards. Inexpensive, and just as effective. And your movement won't be affected like in goalie knee guards.

Any real hockey store should be able to help you out, sew anything you want, suggest different things.I say that is your best bet for info....and not some big department type store that just sells hockey equipment

go without , take it like a man. I use to wear them but never liked the feel, so I just go without. For the couple of bruises a year it isn't worth the hazzel. My opinion of course.LOL

Mine do cover my thighs as well. If you have a proper and decent set of goal pants, this style of knee pad will cover more thigh than the thigh boards on the leg pads because your pants should come down to just above the knee anyways, and I don't even feel the hard cap at all. I also wear volleyball kneepads (with almost no pads at all on them) underneath the Knee pads to help with the fit as even at 30 years old, I have skinny legs. And under the socks, nobody sees them anyways.

i used to wear vball kneepads as well but there were times that i stil smacked my knee good because the knee pads arent really meant for goalies. worst was when i was dragging my knee along the ice in the butterfly, felt like i was scraping my knee on the ice.. they hurt and took along time to heal.

i eventually picked up a set of koho knee pads and they are awesome. they might feel weird at first but once you get used to em they're great.. helps with the confidence knowing you're not going to hurt yourself anymore.

i dont find they affect movement at all. not once you give them the proper chance at least. but to each their own.
