Well boys, another season is upon us. Here's hoping this year is better than last year.
Here's some notes..
-Released Sheffield
-Acquired OF Josh Anderson from Atlanta
-Dontrelle placed on DL with anxiety disorder
-Bonderman placed on DL with shoulder tightness
Today, Dombrowski announced Ryan Perry will begin the year in the majors in the bullpen and Rick Porcello will be the the #5 starter. Also announced was Miner will be in the rotation as well so Robertson will be used out of the pen. Also, Leyland has said Rodney will get the save opportunity on opening day if it arises.
So we're looking at a rotation of Verlander, Jackson, Galarraga, Miner, and Porcello.
4 days until opening day!

Still surprised that Sheffield got released BEFORE he hit his 500th HR. You are gonna pay him 14M this year, you might as well get him to hit his 500th HR in your uniform.
I think they (the Tigers) are trying to catch lightning in a bottle for the 2nd time with Porcello, and Perry, in trying to re-create the '06 season (Verlander/Zumaya)...and that season came after the WBC with Japan winning it, so hopefully, this is a sign of good things to come!!!
If we can avoid the yearly April swoon (2006 season not-with-standing), they should be in the mix the whole season, and into late August-early September, which is all you can ask every year......
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!

Guys, I've gotta' say, I'm very worried about this season. I'm typically optimistic, but the bullpen is one of the worst in the majors. The starting pitching isn't great either, but the bullpen is especially bad. If Ryan Perry isn't everything he's hyped up to be, we may very well blow over 30+ holds/saves again this year. I'm sure the offense will be fine, but pitching is what it comes down to.
Count on Rodney out as the closer within 5 appearances....mark my word.

Excited to get the season started!
Josh Anderson is starting in LF tomorrow with Guillen as the DH. Leyland expects a low scoring game so he figured Anderson could help try to manufacture a run instead of waiting for Thames or Larish to homer of Halladay.

I just don't see them getting it done with the pitching staff that they have. This could get ugly in a hurry, although I absolutely hope not. Verlander does not seem to be the #1 stud that we all thought he was gonna be. If all goes right with the starting rotation (Bondo gets healthy, Verlander returns to form, Edwin lives up to potential, and the rookie works out) then the starters could be solid. But that bullpen!!

I'm holding back my excitement this year. Last year I became so frustrated with the team. This thread started with so much excited last year too...I had to stop watching them in August last year b/c I would get so ticked off. Pretty much a waste fo the MLB season TV package.
Regardless, I'm still excited to see how the season plays out.

I'm excited for the season!
But I'm apprehensive as our pitching staff still has issues.
Verlander has got to be the man this season. Shame about Robertson, Willis, Bondo and ZoomZoom.

Lots of unanswered questions, this year. And last year was so frustrating.
Still, it's a new season. It's hard not to be excited. I'm planning on taking a half day on Friday so I can go to the bar and watch the home opener.

And dang, did JV get lit up yesterday or what? makes me wonder if any of last year's issues have really been addressed here.

Already lookin like the 2008 Tigers all over again. Verlander gets rocked yesterday and today Edwin Jackson throws a gem, but $5million piece of garbage Lyon blows the game, not once, but twice!
** Miner vs. Litsch Wednesday.
Just read that Josh Anderson will start in RF and Maggs will DH. Also, Ramon Santiago will start for Everett and Polanco will get Thursday off.

I know! What a drag! I thought we could win that game, given the way Jackson was pitching.
And is this on Leyland? Jackson's pitch count was only about 90 I think, and maybe he should have been given a chance to finish the game.

Wow, sorry for the absence guys. I had a nasty virus and just got it taken care of. With that being said, I agree with all the above. It was rough watching the past 2 nights of losses. Once again Verlander got rocked and the bullpen blows the win.

Pretty good performance by Porcello today for his debut. Should have been a closer game had Everett not dropped the ball on the double play after Porcello came out. I haven't been impressed at all by Everett's defense so far. The offense is inconsistent, but hopefully they will get that straightened out. I didn't think Romero was anything special at all today and yet they probably should have only gotten 1 run off him since the 2nd run came on a weird bounce off the carpet on Magglio's ball.

Went to the game today with my brother and mom, sucked up until the 8th but man was that a fun inning. Brandon Inge is looking great so far and I think we're going to see a lot more of Miguel walking his way over to 1st.
Oh, and the passenger window in our car got smashed, which was kind of pointless seeing as how there was absolutely nothing of value in there. Ruffled everything up and took the change in the center console. Happened to a bunch of cars too, there were a couple cars with slashed tires, luckily we just had our window blown out. Win some, lose some I suppose.

Dye and Konerko go back-to-back in the 2nd.......Tigers answer back with one in the bottom of the 2nd, with an RBI single by Josh Anderson. and now have the bases loaded with Granderson up.......and leave them loaded. 2-1 after 2 innings....

Looks like Miner was sent to the pen. I can't say I'm surprised, but who are they going to get as a 5th starter??? Seems to me the game was called today to allow the troops to regroup.
Dumbo has made some questionable moves in the last year... or three, but the worst of all was sending Jurrjens to ATL for Diarreah(sp). That move (along with some bad luck and other moves) really hamstrung the rotation.

HUGE WIN today for the Tigers.......9-0!!!!
Galarraga is just unreal, he is sooooooo consistent, and gives you 6 or 7 innings out it seems like every time.
Cabrera and Magglio looked great, and they pounded out 11 hits, all in the last three innings, pretty much. I went to pick up my daughter at school, and was listening to the game, and it sounded like the Pale Hose went to the top step, after Perry threw about four pitches up and in.
I think Cabrera is batting .500 right now, three hits today, with each hit going to different parts of the field......
Can the Tiger petition MLB to see if they can wear #42 everyday the rest of the season?? :)
On to the west coast......

Was at the game yesterday. What a great time, what a great park! Miggy's blast was one row in front of me and about 4 seats over. This dude was gripping it with 2 hands with the intention of giving it to the 1 year old boy sitting next to me, his first game. But this huge, beastly woman wrestled it away from him and gave it to her son. I've gone to plenty of games in my life and have never been that close to a HR ball.

Not a good game tonight! Should have definitely won this game.
Verlander fell apart after 4 perfect innings. Not what you expect out of the guy who is supposed to be the "ace".
The big 5th inning probably ends much better if Inge would make a good throw to the plate, he had all day and bounces it. The whole momentum of the inning would have changed and they would have never squeezed since there would have been 2 outs.
They didn't do a good job of adding on runs and putting Seattle away.

Dontrelle Willis allowed four runs -- two earned -- over seven innings during a rehab appearance with Single-A Lakeland on Tuesday.
The runs are no good, but Willis finally showed a bit of control. He didn't issue a single walk and saw just one three-ball count. Yikes. Ouch.
Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand classified Marcus Thames' injury as "major" on Wednesday and said he'll need "rest with no activity until it quiets down in two to four weeks."
Thames strained the intercostal muscle and cartilage between rib bones on his left side. "It's a grade three, the worst, with bleeding involved," added Rand. "The intercostal, bone and cartilage were all tugged on. That's tough when all that happens." Thames could be out for well over two months.

What a wild game! I didn't think it was ever going to end. Rodney had me pretty scared in the 9th inning with the winning run on deck.
Verlander really needs to get his crap together, he is terrible right now. Also, didn't help that Raburn looked like a little leaguer in the outfield tonight. Who know's how Verlander would have pitched if Raburn catches the ball and Verlander gets out of the 1st with a 2-0 lead.

Joel Zumaya (shoulder) will rejoin the Tigers on Friday, according to the Detroit News.
Zumaya pitched in consecutive minor league games this week. While he'll be back on Friday, he won't be activated until Saturday. It looks like he has his fastball back, clocking anywhere from 94-97 mph in rehab. Look for manager Jim Leyland to ease him back into the lineup initially. If he returns to the form of 2006, which is a longshot, he could take over the closer's role from Fernando Rodney.

Again...with Rodney, his numbers have been inflated, due to pitching in "non-save" situations, he gave up two against the Angels when the Tigers were up 4 in the 9th, and two again last night up 4 runs, so I guess until he blows his 1st save this year, I'll stay excited for him :)
I really thought that they would use Zumaya last night, since FR threw on Sunday.......so I guess that means that Rodnay is unavailable tonight???

Bad loss. Galarraga didn't pitch well again and our hitting didn't come up big when we needed them. We blew a lot of chances with runners in scoring position.
Dontrelle makes his season debut tomorrow.. hoping for the best.

Yeah, not good tonight with RISP. I know it was only the 1st, but I was hoping Leyland would sacrifice Clete and give Cabrera 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Instead Clete hits into a double play.

I didn't get to see the game, b/c we don't get FSD+ in our market, but knowing that situation is at hand ON THE ROAD, IN MINNESOTA, I would have thought long and hard about bunting in that situation, to try, and get a quick run, b/c as Tiger fans know, the Metrodome has always been a tough place to play for them......
Hopefully, Willis will be solid enough, to get into the 6th at least....

With Magglio Ordonez's slow start and millions of dollars in the balance, there are whispers that Ordonez might be released.
The Tigers would be on the hook for the remainder $18 million salary plus a $3 million buy-out next year, but they would avoid the vesting options of $18 and $15 million, respectively, for the next two years. The Tigers certainly aren't strangers to large contract releases as Damion Easley and Gary Sheffield can attest to, but this would be shocking. It's still rather early and if Ordonez can get hot, he would be one of the team's best hitters. Still, it's a situation to follow.

I think it's way too premature to be releasing Maggs. The best would to try and move him at the deadline. At least they'd get something in return.

Didn't Maggs get off to a slow start in '07, and finished the year at .360+???
Maggs is a "professional hitter", and "when the leaves turn colors", and whatever other cliche' they want to use...he will be near .300 or over at the end of the year........
Please don't discard him like they did with Pudge......as those two were the guys that got the ball rolling to get players to come to Detroit......

A lot of talk about releasing Maggs on the radio today. I say they should take the wait and see approach....way too early like jigga said. Also, I am very excited to watch Dontrelle pitch tonight. I am not getting my hopes up, but I just really want the guy to do well.

Real tough loss tonight. Can't really blame Lyon as he was out there way too long, he was in his 3rd inning and up over 50 pitches. He was probably just worn out which led to him hanging a curveball to Crede (I am not a Lyon fan at all, but think he deserves a break tonight). Amazing how crazy stuff always happens there. Nobody scores for 4 innings and then as soon as we score we go right out and give up 5 to lose it.
Overall, Lloyd didn't do a good job of handling the bullpen after Leyland was tossed. They're attempting to keep Zumaya healthy and he has him throw almost 50 pitches!

Wow am I glad I was at work during he game because I probably would have broken something. Seen JV pitched ANOTHER gem and the bullpen blows the game. (What's new?)
It's just something about the Twins, we just can't beat them.
Hopefully we can turn this around for when Oakland comes into town tomorrow.

I am hoping to make a road trip to Erie at some point this year, and hopefully, he will make it to Toledo by the end of the year!!!

Nice win last night...
Hopefully the Tigers will continue to add to thier 10-0 record on Saturday's and Sunday's this year, and Porcello continues to throw quality big league pitches!!!
Nice to see Magglio get three knocks last night. 9-12 from your 3-5 hitters is exectly what Leyland is looking for on a consistent basis.
Clete Thomas has looked pretty nice in the "3" hole, though I don't see it lasting too much longer...but he has shown that he is capable of having a good OBP, with some gap power....
Jackson has been brilliant this year....very nice pick up.

I've been thinking the same thing about Armando. The way he has been pitching, he very well may be the odd man on when Bondo returns.
Our pitching is going to need to be on the top of their games when we play the Rangers with Hamilton, Kinsler, Young, and company.
