Delhomme extended 5 years with $20 guaranteed. am i missing something here?
On Thursday, they proved it, giving Delhomme a five-year, $42.5 million extension that keeps the 34-year-old under contract through the 2014 season.
in other news, Reggie Wayne restructured his deal to save the Colts some cash. i applaud you Wayne. in an age of diva WRs you, sir, still care about winning.

$20 for 5 picks seems right. What's the problem.
$42,5 million with only $20 guaranteed.....Panthers made out HUGE in that deal.:)

They restructed Delhomme's contract as well to free up some money. He was going to cost them 10 Mil against the Cap next year.
So do you applaud Delhomme now as well?

The main reason Delhomme got the extension is to give the Panthers desparately needed cap space. They haven't been able to do anything with Peppers in limbo. Delhomme was going to make $9-10mil this year alone so when you take all that into consideration it's not too much of a deal. It's probably backloaded and the panthers get some cap space.

$20 guaranteed is BRILLIANT! The Panthers GM should be given the key to the city.

it's a good sign if he's willing to help his team financially . . . however, he hasn't actually helped them on the field, which makes me question why they'd even extend his contract or guarantee him $ in the first place. i thought they were a team looking for a potential QB in the draft, to be honest.

Restructures to help his team out, doesn't cry about not getting the ball after every game, Learned from one of the best WR to ever play the game. I'm glad Waynes a Colt i'd take him over 2 Owens and 3 Ocho Cincos.

With Julius Peppers killing them cap space wise right now the Panthers had to make a move to free up some space. Extending Delhomme does that. He is getting less per year now against the cap. So the Panthers got what they wanted (a good veteran QB for less money) and Delhomme got what he wanted (an extension that allows him to finish his career in Carolina).
This is a win win deal for both sides. Delhomme is better then a lot of QB's out there. 2 years ago proved the Panthers are in trouble without him.
Panthers can now sign their draft picks and maybe a free agent or 2. They still need to settle the Peppers situation though. He has until about 4pm today to sign his franchise tender if the Panthers are going to trade him before or during the draft.

Well said, Toight.
I don't know what you would accomplish if you were the Panthers by being reactionary and cutting Delhomme after his horrible game vs. the Cardinals. Especially when you consider that he still is and has been an above average QB for the most part during his 5+ years as a starter, that you have no viable alternatives to replace him and that you have no cap space to do it with.
It just makes alot more sense for Carolina to stick with Delhomme for another year or two when you still have the make up of a contender around him instead of trying to work in a rookie and putting your team in a tough spot. However, that shouldn't stop them from trying to find their future at the position through the draft.

Panthers should draft Rhett Bomar in the draft and groom him as the QB of the future. Bomar will be one of if not the best QB in this draft when all is said and done.

5 picks? Shoot, I could double that, and it wouldn't even have to be a playoff game. Let the bidding commence!

This!
He was going to count $11 mliion towards the cap this year. Anybody who thinks he'll see all 5 years of that contract is crazy. They have much needed cap space now. I don't think they should have guaranteed him $20 million. But oh well. I still love Jake. I'm definetly in the minority in Charlotte though. Most of the fans are ready to give him the boot. I have forgiven him for the bad playoff game.
