I leave my apartment for a few days and I come back and this place is crawling with ****ing fruit flies. I found the source. Let a little bit of chicken in the sink go by when I was cleaning. Now there are a **** ton in my kitchen. My apartment is spotless and they are still buzzing around.

Any suggestions without having to get some insect killer?

get a bowl and pour in some vinegar. cover the bowl with plastic wrap. then poke some holes in the top. fruit flies go in, and won't come out. dumb little insects.

My place is near spotless and they aren't going away. I notice they take interest in old beer bottles.

I will try that. I need to grab some vinegar though.

Just wait the 12 hours and they'll die of old age. The trick is neutering the male flies.

They're breeding in your sink.. get some draino and pour it down the sink.. do you have a garbage disposal in the sink? If so you might have to talk to the Apt. people... I used to work in the club house at one of our Apts and we'd get calls all the time and usually it just meant a maintenance guy would go pour crap down the drain.. some would do bleach.. but I don't know if it's safe for all drains.

They could also be breeding in your empty beer bottles... ;)

Offer some beer and then take advantage of them.

Rent any Rob Schneider movie and play it.. The flies will flee the place, and whoever stay, will die in a few minutes.

Clean your house better. Bleach your drains, wash or toss out your dish rags and sponges, always use covered garbage cans in the house and remember to take any food garbage to the outdoor trash that night, instead of leaving it for trash day. Do your laundry, they'll lay eggs in your nasty, crusty underwear, or so I learned from a particularly disgusting freshman year roommate. THROW OUT ALL BEER CANS, THEY ARE LIKE FRUIT FLY BABY FACTORIES!!

The vinegar trap works really well, but the trick is to keep them from breeding. If you just clean really well, the lifespan of a fruit fly is 8 to 10 days and eventually without new food to eat, they will just die.

If you don't have vinegar, you can use paper, a jar and a piece of fruit.

Use the paper to create a funnel with a tiny hole in end. The idea is the same as the bowls of vinegar... the flys can get in, but not out. The fruit is bait and the jar traps them.

Get an AK-47 and go to town with that.

Escape in a dropship and nuke your apartment from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

fruit flies don't form from meat....

if so, they would be meat flies....lol

That being said, beer bottles and cans(especially limes left in Corona bottles) are your main culprits.

Take it from someone who raised fruit flies for a dart frog collection, yeast is a main ingredient in making a fly culture.....

all above tricks work. If you are saving cans for recycling, keep them rinsed and outside. If you aren't, then make sure all fruit is consumed within the ripe period.

Fruit flies just don't appear. Fruit fly eggs are actually on/in produce when we buy them fresh. It's only when they start rotting do they start to incubate and hatch. The moist, warm environment kicks them into high gear.

Kind of like how maggots will only eat rotting flesh....

just make sure that they're all fruit flies. if you have a fungus fly infestation AND a fruit fly infestation you may find that you'll see a lot less of them but they'll suddenly be in places you weren't focused on before.

I'd use a can of hairspray/deoderant and a cigarette lighter. Wide sweeping sprays should wipe them buggers out.

Stop being a fruit? I tried it out and it didn't do anything to the flies. It only made me explore my true feelings and discover many things about myself.

What helps me is always keeping the fruit in plastic bags...never leave 'em out on the counter top or in a open trash bin...especially bananas.
