I am thinking about looking into this field. I would like to know, what I need to do, to become a Police Officer.

you will need to apply and take a pre fitness test, then if you qualify they will then interview you and then if you pass that then you go to the academy

If you need to ask, you're probably not police material. :D:eek:

You don't have to, but it gives you a better chance of getting hired if there are a lot of applicants.

Some departments require a criminal justice or similar type of degree that you can get at a local community college. Best bet is to check with your local department and others in areas that you are interested in applying and see what they require. Most will send you to the LEA after they hire you.

most of my buddies back home in Upstate NY are cops. One is pretty high up in the SWAT team.
He was showing me all his crazy ass cool gear he has.
He has some thermal thing that is bad ass... you can see foot prints or a hand print on a wall of something someone touched a few minutes prior.
Dont lie on the psych exam either... they catch you lying and you def are not in the door.

Hey cool. I have a few friends in NYPD SWAT. Thermal FlashSight. Good stuff! Got to see it used during a DHS exercise.

100% sure Beefeaster isn't a cop. But I wouldn't want to fight him. I hear he has the mutant ability to turn your food into Arby's Cheddar's Melts right as you bite into it.
Gross.

im looking into the field too, but where I live,Chicago, has not given out applications since 2006 and I dont see it happening soon unless we get the olympics here in the city. I already bought books on how to take the tests and know exactly what the fitness test consist of. All im doing now is getting into shape so I can pass the physical and just worry about the other tests. I might just try to join a suburban police department but it may not be as exiciting as the city, yup I know that sounds crazy.

I have a B.S. in criminal justice and it helps you, but not that much. Also some guys resent you because you have one. Typically you have to run a mile and a half in a certain amount of time.

Does the degree give you a faster promotion compared to people that doesn't have it?

No, but it guarantees you're hired on at a higher salary.

Cops rule....except for the gobs of ****ing jagoff rookies. :D Rookies really are the devil's a-hole. **** rookies.
If you're a porker, just rent "Paul Blart Mall Cop" and live your dream that way. That's my best advice.

yeah the promotion thing is more of what you show them and your leadership skills as opposed to your education. You probably would start out a little higher in pay, and that is why a lot of guys resent you. It really just depends on the department and if they want to pay you more because of your education.
The great thing about education is it will help you get federal work. With experience and a BS in accounting, political science, computer engineering, or something like that and have a minor in Criminal justice, you would be all set.

Look around and find out what the physical requirements are. The Illinois Power test requirement depends on your age but I believe its something like 37 sit-ups in a minute, bench press 98% of your body weight, and run a mile and half in under 14 minutes. Theres a few other tests, but thats the bulk of it. I doesn't seem hard, but dozens of people fail the test each group.

It's really political too.
You can qualify across the boards, but if there are only 12 or so "finalists" you can bet the Mayor's neighbor's son is getting in before you do.
I befriended a local detective while working on his kitchen and I was telling him about how I wanted to get into the field, etc. He looked me square in the eye and said..."don't bother"
He basically stated that being an officer this day and age is worthless. You have to watch EVERY little thing you do to avoid a lawsuit or a racial case. He said as a detective, 10 years ago he would close 90% of his cases in a minute. Nowadays, cases take YEARS to close due to small loopholes and criminal rights BS.
If anything, try and go for a specialized field like forensics or computer law. A family member is a "cyber officer" who chases predators all day online. His facebook the other day said "Off to the library to chat with my 40yo boyfriend online" lol

Eyup what he said. Just find out which PD's, Sheriff's, or HP is hiring and apply. Then get ready for the academy beatdown PROBY :D
My recommendation is that if you have a degree, look to the feds and/or a specialization like CustomCreator said.
Definitely answer the questions on the psyche test EXACTLY the way you would if you were talking to a buddy.......without the profanity :p Seriously, they are written off a biographical index; you answering, "yes, I have chased an emergency vehicle to get through traffic faster" is an answer some shiite-hot super cop or fed answered on his.
Drop me a pm if you have local or fed questions.

I don't know that for a fact, I just know that when you hire on for a city or state job, having a degree automatically bumps you into a higher pay bracket than people who don't have a degree.

For Chicago Police you're required to have at least 2 years (credits equivalent) of College. It can be any subject form what I understand, but most take Criminal Justice.

Not always true.
Nothing is a guarantee in regards to law enforcement.
Now in California the only requirement for most Sheriff's Departments and Police Departments is a High School Diploma, no felonies and such.

What I'm saying is that if you look at the hiring roster FOR ANY State or City job (which all police tend to fall under) you'll notice that the job pays more for people who have a degree (especially master's degrees) than someone with just related experience.
It also makes negotiating your salary a little more flexible too. Although why anyone would want to take the trouble to go to college and possibly get a master's degree only to take a low paying, civil servant job is completely beyond me.

Bachelor's Degree
Under the age of 37
Willing to be stationed anywhere in the U.S and it's territories
You cannot be stationed in the city from where you apply
You will mostly likely be assigned to a big city (Miami, LA, NY, etc) field office your first go round
The academy is 16 weeks; you find out your first field office on week 7
You must pass a polygraph, physical fitness test, written test (a B-I-T-C-H), and a panel interview
All you had to do was ask ;)

I hear you on your last notation.
However in SoCal things are different I guess in regards to pay.

lol no no no, I was at the written test part, which has the psych already implimented in the exame and they claim to base the polygraph off some of your answers...I also got a no-go on the written testing procedure....guess I do not think logically enough for the FBI...
