Wow, thought everybody heard of Nomo. He was pretty good his first yr with the Dodgers in like 1995. Maybe the buyer is from Japan?

I'm very surprised that a lot of his cards would go that high, regardless of the count. eBay is a strange place sometimes.

A collection this large, would go well into a "master collection" for a Nomo collector. Also, consider he was one of the first really popular Japanese players to make an impact in the MLB. He may have been around, but he also played in a lot of big Markets (L.A., Boston, etc.) where collectors are immense as well.
I'm not really surprised his cards (or a large amount like this) are selling for this price.

I would be willing to bet the buyer is in Japan. Buying a lot like this to import there would really lower shipping costs, and he is still very popular in his home country. He was after all, one of the very first high profile players to come over, and the only Japanese pitcher to throw an MLB no-hitter. Japanese people are very largely very xenophobic and support domestic products (in this case the pitcher and not the cards) feverishly.
I also imagine getting MLB cards there would be expensive and hard to find.

"Nomo is one of only five players that have ever pitched at least one no-hitter game in both the National League and American League in Major League Baseball history."

doesn't surprise me. he had a rock star like beginning in the majors and those who still collect him are hardcore.
his certified auto cards out of packs go for even more astronomical numbers.

That makes a lot of sense. That's quite possible.

I'm in Japan right now and the following for Japanese baseball players is huge. Heads still check for him.

Imagine if McFarlane ever made a Nomo figure in the tornado wind-up. It would be a huge sell in Japan.
