Went by TRU Greenspoint on the way home today...no NFL 12.

They did have a bunch of the new 3" NBA figs...yeah, I know...not too much demand for those!

They had some NFL 11 regs (looked like they may have put out a case this morning or yesterday because there were over a dozen, and when I went last week, there were only 4) and PLENTY of Legends regs.

Also, tons of 12" of everyone but Aikman. No Deion/Rice 2 pack either.

by the way, I'm still looking for a Julius Jones reg (along with the harder to finds Alex Smith and Jason Elam). Post here if you see some somewhere por favor.

I'm excited about NFL 12 because I only want 6 figures (all regs - Dillon, Tomlinson, Brees, Mawae, Arrington, and Boldin). HOPEFULLY, those shouldn't be too tough to track down at retail, with the possible exception of Boldin.

I'll also be looking for a NBA 9 Nowitzki reg and chase (if there is one) figure when they come out, so any help of spotting one or both is appreciated!

If they get the first pick, they should trade down for multiple draft choices. Bush only makes sense for teams that are one player away from contending. That ain't the Texans, they're basically starting from scratch. They need as many quality players as they can get.

Look at what San Diego did a couple of years ago, they traded away the rights to Michael Vick and wound up with LT and Drew Brees. Who would you say got the better of that deal?

Drew Brees was the first pick of the second round (ie same as Jabar and we should have that pick along with the 1st pick next year) and LT was the 5th pick, trade down to 5 and who do you take? Our GM has blowen more picks then anyone in the history of the NFL.

Who's going to open the gaping holes Bush has become accustomed to seeing at USC?

The Texans need to shore up their lines on both sides of the ball before they can worry about adding playmakers.

sigep001
11-29-2005, 01:06 PM
Charlie Casserly wouldn't make a good pick if he had all 32 picks in the 1st round. I still can't believe they drafted David Carr. Nobody thought he'd be a franchise QB! He may be a decent starter, but nobody thought that guy was gonna be Troy Aikman. They should have gone with Julius Peppers there.

I think Casserly is fired in the offseason along with Capers. There is nothing worthy of keeping in the front office of this organization.

I say you try to trade down, but if you don't get what you believe to be decent value, you stick to your guns and draft Reggie Bush.

They should focus their FA efforts on the OL/DL. Even if they draft an OL or a DL, it will be several years before that player is making a consistent, positive impact. Look at Robert Gallery...he's starting at RIGHT tackle, and he's still been only average, and he was by all means more highly regarded than D'Brickashaw Ferguson coming out of the draft.

If it was possible to fire most of the team, I would.

I think I'd only keep Andre Johnson, Domanick Davis, Dunta Robinson, Antwaan Peek, and Travis Johnson out of just about everyone on the team. Everyone else can leave.

The problem with drafting a rb when you're in rebuilding mode is that rb's tend to have fairly short careers (especially rb's on bad teams). By the time the team gets good, you're looking for a new rb.

Running back should be one of the last pieces the Texans add, not the first. Davis is a serviceable back who can carry the load while they rebuild.

If we can promise to Reggie Bush that he will have a 12 foot wide hole to run through like he does now, then by all means draft him. If we want him to return punts, then hell no, cause he sucks at returning punts. If we want him to return kicks then double hell no, because he's one of the worst kick returners in America, which is hard to beliebe with his supposed blazing speed and moves. He ranks somewhere past #100 in the nation in kickoff returns.

I;'m not even sure if he's the next Brian Westbrook. He might be the next Leeland McElroy as far as I am concerned. I will absolutely not watch a game all of next year if they waste the #1 overall pick on a glorified Leeland Mcelroy

Actually, the consensus view at the time was that Carr was a franchise caliber prospect:
http://www.nfl.com/draft/2002/QB_analysis.html

DAVID CARR, FRESNO STATE

Height: 6-3 Weight: 230 Birthdate: July 21, 1979
ANALYSIS Carr is rated by most as the No. 1 QB prospect in the draft after an impressive season, followed by a stellar showing at the Senior Bowl. Led Fresno State to an 11-2 record while throwing for 4,299 yards and 42 touchdowns. Is an excellent passer with a strong arm; he throws the deep ball well. Named the 2001 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner. Has been compared to former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman. Was thought to be an early Heisman contender after he led the Bulldogs to wins over Colorado, Oregon State and Wisconsin, but losses against Boise State and Hawaii hurt his chances. Makes good, quick decisions and proved durable and consistent during his career at Fresno State.
http://images.nfl.com/draft/2002/images/carr_mug.jpg "Everything about Carr indicates he's a franchise quarterback ... He possesses excellent touch, timing and precision. He also has the presence and leadership qualities you look for in a QB. Carr was the most consistent quarterback in college football in 2001, and he took that consistency to Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl."
— Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN
"David Carr has all the things you're looking for in a franchise quarterback -- the arm, mobility, head, toughness and leadership ability."
— Vinny Cerrato, Redskins director of player personnel

David's problems have been the result of poor a supporting cast, and nonexistant coaching. Upgrade both of those, and he can be one of the better qb's in the game.

I had a feeling someone would bring this up.

My gut reaction to your link is that those talking heads ranked Carr so high BECAUSE he was about to be picked #1 overall. I'm just not a big fan of the..."we're picking #1 so we should take a QB since that's the most important position. Who's the best QB?" plan. Kiper is probably going to say that the top 2-3 QBs every draft class are "franchise QBs"...that's not a big surprise.

When you pick #1, you should take the best player regardless of position, and in my opinion, that was Julius Peppers. The team that has long-term succes is a team that doesn't throw away their picks in which they should have just gone with the guaranteed best player available. The Texans were far too antsy to get a "Face of the Franchise", and they overlooked the fact that David Carr wasn't a dominant prospect. He could very well have been the #3 QB in some draft classes.

I would much rather them have signed a veteran QB and build from the trenches first. It's much easier to develop playmakers when they are not running for their lives, being crucified in the media, getting injured, etc.

David Carr will make pro bowl teams before his career is over. You can take that any way you like it. He's a damn good quarterback. He's been put behind the eight ball with an expansion team, in addition to the horrible front office moves. The Texans offense, on most Sundays, resembles the offense i ran at the Baytown YMCA back in 1983. The Baytown YMCA may have even had more complex offenses. You cannot realistically expect him to look good when he is throwing 5 yard stop patterns 98% of the time. Anything beyond a 3 step drop gets him killed. Joe Montana would look like Heath Shuler in this offense.

I'll just say I disagree.

And how long will this team still be referred to as an expansion team? This is year 4! I know the Carolina Panthers aren't still referred to as an expansion team, and I doubt they were in year 4 of their existence.

I just think it's time to stop using that excuse despite the fact that they're playing like an expansion team.

I really think you're applying too much hindsight to this. At the time he was drafted, Carr was generally considered to be a can't miss prospect, a franchise qb a team could build around. Imo he may still be that kind of player. Until he has the support system in place, we won't really know.

I'm sorry...I just don't see it. I know I was actively hoping for Peppers before the media made it seem like Peppers couldn't thrive in the 3-4. Well, maybe you need a different system if you're going to eliminate a certain group of players from being productive in your system.

Carr, while not being given much time, has still shown horrible decision making. Half of the sacks he has endured has been because he didn't get rid of the ball quickly, and quite a few of those are when he just runs out of bounds (UNACCEPTABLE!). Why run out of bounds when you can just fling it back to the line of scrimmage and not lose yardage?

It's this kind of decision making (or lack thereof), coupled with his inability to audible into a productive play that irks me. Whether it's because he lacks the authority or just doesn't know what he's doing, I'm not sure, but a franchise QB (ala Aikman, Elway, Brady, Manning, etc.) would audible the damn play regardless of what his coach will say on the sideline.

He actually said on the radio the other day that he'll only audible from a running play to a different running play! WHAT?!?

David Carr a Pro Bowl QB...Now thats funny...The man can't read a defense but i am sure he could be an all star for the Baytown YMCA.

How do we know what he can do? Everytime he tries anything requiring more than a three step drop he gets plastered.

Carr has the tools to be an elite qb. What he needs is some help.

Look, no qb would be able to succeed with the subpar supporting cast the Texans have assembled. Put Peyton Manning out there, and the results would be pretty much the same. It's true that Carr has developed some bad habits, but they are in no small part due to the pounding he's taken in the last four seasons.

The audible thing you're refering to probably has something to do with the general simplification of the offense that has occurred since Chris Palmer was sent packing. The fact is this group of players simply isn't capable of successfully implementing a more aggressive off. scheme.

I promise you this - if he is cut loose, someone will snatch him up asap. Imo the Texans would be making a huge mistake, there's simply too much ability and potential there to give up on Carr at this stage.

I agree with you partly. Somebody would snatch him up, but the difference is that expectations would be much lower. A team like Baltimore or even Dallas would love to have Carr in the near future, but I bet they'd be willing to admit that he has the capability of being a decent QB.

Houston should consider releasing him because they'll have to pay him $24M over the next 3 seasons. That's expensive for ANY QB, let alone one that hasn't done much in the NFL as a #1 overall pick. I think the only reason Houston won't do it is because they feel they've invested too much time in him, and they think it would be embarassing to let him go. He's a decent QB, easily replaceable either through the draft or through FA, and whoever they replace him with will come much cheaper than $24M over 3 seasons.

I said from an expansion team, which is the excuse for the first two years, to a team with a horrible front office, which is the reason we are where we are still.
The front office has gotten us into this mess. Carr will make a Pro Bowl or two. There's no doubt in my mind. Until this absolute meltdown of a team we have this year, his career numbers were eerily similar to John Elway's after 3 years(Elway wasn't on an expansion team either). He will be a very good quarterback in the NFL. I just hope it's not for some other team.

Please don't release him. Johnny Unitas reincarnated would be doing exactly what Carr is doing for this team, if not less. At least Carr can scrambvle around a little bit when his offensive line starts the fire drill method of pass protection after the snap.

Listen to me know, believe me later.. All you Bush haters will be kicking yourselves if we pass on him. We need a playmaker on this team, yes we need a ton of help on defense but you can build that through free agency. What is the point of trading down for extra picks? This team has pretty well blown every 2nd and 3rd pick to date. Why trade away a can't miss for a couple of Jason Babin's? As far as the SC line opening gaping holes, I agree but Reggie only needs a small crease to break one off. Honestly, how many of you guys actually watch much PAC-10 football? just curious. Being a west coast transplant I like to catch as much late night football as I can, but it seems not many folks east of the Pacific time zone pay much attention to it. My prediction is Reggie will end up being conisdered "Baby Barry"!

I've seen USC play Notre Dame, Fresno State, Arizona, Arizona State this year.

Barry Sanders type backs are once in a generation. To be that type of back, you would generally need to be pretty damn good at punt returns and kick returns. Barry Sanders would have been the greatest return man the NFL has ever seen if he chose to do that. Those types of moves in a guy lend themselves towards breaking away on returns. Barry Sanders averaged 31.5 freaking yards per kickoff return in 1987 at OSU. The same year he averaged 16.4 yards perpunt return. The argument cannot be made that he was on a better team, like you could with Reggie Bush.

Let's take a look at Reggie Bush's return numbers for this, his alleged Heisman year, shall we?
Reggie Bush is averaging 10.5 per punt return and, check this out, 17.2 yards on 22 kickoff returns this year. Absolutely putrid numbers compared to even Wes Welker, much less Barry Sanders. Reggie Bush might be a lot of things, but a lethal open field runner is not any where on the list.

Good running backs are not always great return men, but in the case of Bush, all of his running back skills are supposed to be predicated on speed and moves, which are skills that should lend towards being a good return man. That is if the speed and moves are what they were built up to be.

I think you're reading too much into return skills. Bush was one of the better return men in the country last season. You mean to tell me that he's just bad all of a sudden? No...it's that the sample size (only 22 kickoffs this season) is too small.

Regardless, Jerome Mathis has proven that he's a capable return man, so there's no reason to bring Bush to Houston as a return man anyways. You're bringing him here as a running back and a pass receiver.

A talent like Bush doesn't come along very often. The Texans will be kicking themselves in a few years if they just completely ignore Bush because they have Domanick Davis already. One of the smartest things the Bills did was draft Willis McGahee (and they did that with Travis Henry already).

I think you just hate USC and won't give them props whatsoever.

panamamyers
11-30-2005, 12:45 AM
22 is a decent sample size to get it past 20 yards per return at least. Fresno St kickedto him on purpose....
I dont him as a returner....I just think someone who is billed as electric and lethal and can take it to the house ata ny time would be able to make yards outside of the confines of the system known as the USC juggernaut offense.

I like certain USC players, but I do think they get a wee bit overhyped, like Mike Williams for instance

HOUSTON UPSETS No. 25 LSU 84-83

Oliver Lafayette torches the Tigers for 32 points.

Nov. 29, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Oliver Lafayette had quite a homecoming Tuesday night.

Returning to his hometown, Lafayette scored 27 of his 32 points in the second half and Houston rallied for an 84-83 victory over No. 25 LSU.

Lafayette, who was 2-of-7 from the field in the first half, made 10 of his 13 second-half shots - including five of six from behind the 3-point line.

"It was great to come home and play like this," said Lafayette, the Division II Junior College Player of the Year last season at Brown Mackie before joining Tom Penders' squad. "Coach got on me at the half and told me to shoot the ball.

"He told me to play like Allen Iverson. I felt like the basket was 10 feet wide."

The Cougars (2-1) trailed by 12 points at halftime but outscored the Tigers 18-3 in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the second half to take a 49-46 lead. Lafayette scored 11 points in the run...

...With the win, Houston won its first road game against a ranked opponent since beating 15th-ranked TCU, 84-65, on February 25, 1987 in Fort Worth. The victory also is Houston's second win against a ranked team in the last two seasons and gives the Cougars a 2-2 record against nationally-ranked teams in the last two years under head coach Tom Penders.

The Cougars return home to play host to 13th-ranked Arizona this Saturday night on the Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion at 6:00 p.m. This week marks the first time the Cougars have played back to back games against nationally-ranked teams since playing against UCLA and Kansas in the first two rounds of the 2002 Maui Invitational.

Speaking of Heisman, who do you all think will get it? Even though Leinart won it last year his numbers this year are better than lasts and should be considred a strong candidate. However his teammate, Mr. Bush, is making opposing teams D-lines look like childs play this year. He's really been steppin' it up when the team needs him to, another strong candidate. However if Young can lead the Horns to the Big 12 Championship this weekend I think he'll be a frontrunner. He's really pulled it together this year! Hopefully he can keep it up in the NFL. By the way, does anybody other then me think they're just going to totally destroy Colorado?

Also, who's our next head coach next year? Predictions anyone?

I think Reggie Bush will win it. I don't necessarily think that he should though.

I never think Texas is going to destroy anyone, no matter who they are playing. I am always scared. I will be there though, and I sure hope they pound them. I don't think I can take any close calls right now.

On today's version of "Mike and Mike in the Morning" on ESPNRadio, they came up with some football related xmas carols. One in particular really stood out (sung to the tune of Do You Hear What I Hear?)

Said David Carr to his offen-sive line,
"Do you see what I see?
A blitz package coming from the out-side,
Do you see what I see?
Do you see what I see?
stars, above, swirling all around,
As my stats continue to fall down,
as I find myself laying on the ground"

I need this for a present, so it would need to be before xmas. My office is on the NW side (610 North @ E TC Jester, about a min away from where the loop joins Hwy 290). I live on the SW side (Sharpstown area), but I'm not there much except on weekends. Let me know what works best for you.

I heard something on 610 yesterday korning that made me laugh. Imagine this scenario for the upcoming 49er's/Texans game. Can you imagine what would happen if the Texans fumbled the ball? Who'd go after it? You'll have a bunch of lineman standing around looking at each other waiting for someone to pick it up...lol!

Looks like everyone that posts here has one but, just in case, there were 12 Rice/Sanders 2-packs at the TRU in Humble at 5 PM today.

Also, I've got a buddy interested in trading away a MOMC white Bettis chase. I think he's more interested in quantity vs. an even value swap for another chase figure. He's an opener and needs all of NFL 11 except Roaf, and all of NFL 12 except Mawae and Arrington. I'll talk to him tomorrow to see if he's interested in any of the chases from those series.

Post or PM me with any offers that I can pass on.

Thanks guys.

Considering that he could also play in the infield as well, I'm all for signing Nomar. I think that he could still hit 20+ hrs and drive in 70 or so runs playing in Minute Maid. As much as I love Bagwell, I think that the Stros have to have a plan in place in case he can't play.

Also, I wish that I would have checked the board earlier, I really want a Sanders/Rice 2-pack. Hopefully, there will still be some left.

There's not really any room for Bagwell anyways. The Astros are in a bind because they need to add a bat, but there's already nowhere to put that bat.

In all honesty, signing Biggio to return just muddles up this team even more. Without Biggio, this team could have gone after Brian Giles or someone like that.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was talking to a fellow boardie and Houstonian about this idea earlier and wanted to get you all's opinion on it. Also, wanted to see who'd be interested in doing something like this.

I'm wanting to start a group(not sure what you call it) where you have a certain amount of people pitch in an established amount of money every month in order to get a case of their choice. I know this has been done here on the board in the past and they've gone over very well.

The number of people would be 7 and the amount is going to be $20. That should be enough to cover the price of a case and shipping. There are enough of us on this thread to limit this group to just Houstonians as well.

The way it'll work will go like this, once the group is established a designated person will be the "treasurer" to be in charge of the money. Once all the money has been collected they will be in charge of ordering the case and making sure it get's to the appropriate person. Obviously, in order for that to happen the entire group would have to email their respective addresses to the "treasurer". The "treasurer" would also be responsible for keeping track of everyone in the group and who's turn it is to get the case. As for the money, there's going to be a "due date" in which it has to be in. This will remain constant for every month. If you miss the "due date" you forfeit your turn and will be placed at the end of the line. Also, once you've been selected to be in the group there's no quitting. Once you're in, you're in for the long haul. Quitting only screws the next person in line and doesn't do your rep any good either ;) Once the cycle has been completed only then can you opt out of the group if you choose to do so. The group won't start up again until the vacated spot(s) have been filled.

Sorry for the long read guys but that's the jist of it. Most of us have been on here long enough to know each other by name and trust one another. As we all know there's just so much TMP is putting out now it's getting hard to keep up with everything, let alone our own collections. I figured this would be a fun way to fill some of the "holes" and cut down on cost a bit.

So in closing, if you like the idea and would like to participate please post. Only the first 7 people will be chosen. However if there's enough interest and enough people there's a possibility of having 2 groups. With all that said I'm going to be the 1st person signing up :D Only 6 spots left guys....who's with me? :)

TEXAS33 -

There are 30 figures (27 are chase figures - the 3 non-chase figures are McNair, Ogden, and Moss Raiders).

Chase figures are (all in great condition unless noted):

Series 2 - Culpepper (slight INNER bubble damage), E. James (slight INNER bubble damage)

Series 6 - E. Smith (Cards), Alexander, Alstott, P. Holmes (red/red), Bledsoe, McAllister

Series 7 - Favre, Portis, Shockey, Peppers

Series 8 - McNair, A. Green, Holt, T. Brown, J. Lewis, Manning

Series 9 - Holmes, C. Johnson, Urlacher, K. Bell, Culpepper

Series 10 - Moss, Ri. Williams, Owens, T. Green

Willing to sell all 30 figures for $300...that's $10 a figure. I had every chase figure made, and I decided to sell off all of them (this is what I have left). I'm not interested in selling piece by piece for $10 (just because several of them are worth quite a bit more than that (i.e. Culpepper1, James), and I don't want people to take too big of an advantage over me).

Firing Capers, while allowing Casserly to keep his job, is akin to firing a race car driver because the engine fell out of his car. The person who should go is the idiot who built the car, not the poor sap stuck driving it.

My local Wally got a case of Napoleon Dynamite but have not had NFL SP's since 2004.

Edit: With the exception of some of the NFL 2-packs..last was McNabb/Strahan

Go check your local walmart. I cracked open a case of nfl 12 at Meyerland and pulled a favre chase. Was hoping for a mcnabb nh since nobody has found them yet. Anyway, I checked westheimer WM, Greenspoint WM, and one out on 10-E by the beltway. Nothing at all 3. I'm sure a few more in Houston had to get a case.

If you ever find anything at that Greenspoint WM then I'll have to give you a round of applause. That place makes me depressed even going in there. I went to a load of WM's Friday night, but nothing to be had at any of them. Quite a few have cleared out theirsp's pegs, so it looks like they could be getting something in, but nothing yet. One of the WM's on the northside got in the new NHL line a fee weeks back, but no football.
