Actually, I did know that Pistol Pete went to Broughton, that is why I'm getting the fig of him to add to my NC sports collection. I didn't know the part about his dad though. He actually went to 3 different high schools-Daniel (Clemson, SC) and Edwards Military Institute (Salemburg, NC) were the other two.

Players who have played or coached in the alumni game Stackhouse, Carter, Jamison, Rice, Fox, Perkins, K. Smith, Wallace, D. Williams, Reese, Ford, Jimmy Black. Some dook, state and wake players. Hoping Felton, May, Williams, Scott, Manual and others play this year. Duncan and Brand where on the list one year, but where playing for Team USA at the time. Will post a list when I get one for the golf and the game.

I don't think he went to Enloe, I don't know if his dad coached there or not. I found this bio on ESPN Classic http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Maravich_Pete.html
Pretty interesting he played for his dad at LSU and check this out:

In an interview in 1974, Maravich had said, "I don't want to play 10 years [in the NBA] and then die of a heart attack when I'm 40."

Unfortunately, this is what happened. On Jan. 5, 1988, he collapsed after a three-on-three pickup game in Pasadena, Calif., and died of a heart attack. Pete Maravich was 40.

That is really freaky.

I'll go looking tomm. after school Ed. I'll shoot you a PM if I find you one. I know I saw a couple at the Spring Lake WM.

Also, I agree this is a pretty good series and this comes from someone who is no longer a hardcore NBA fan. I think they messed up with the 1st rd. being 7 games, so possibly you could be adding another 28 games to a teams's season. I bet some teams are happy to be chilling, getting ready for the draft.

P.S.-If anyone finds a Hawks Pistol and would like to trade for the white Bird give me a holla.

I got an autograph from former Reds' infielder D'Angelo Jimenez before the game last night at Five County Stadium. He was obnoxious and it was apparent that he was bothered by the request although he signed. I got a great pic of him last year in Cincinnati as he was crossing the plate after belting a home run and I wanted it signed was the only reason that I asked. It is amazing how some insignificant ballplayer in the big scheme of things could such a jerk.

A quick bump to let you guys know, at the end of June, the high school I coach at will be having a football clinic. My head coach said that Kerry Collins will probably be there again this year, since he just lives up in Troy, NC. Also Marcus Allen is speaking at the luncheon I don't know if he will be at the camp. Last year Tony Gonzales was there, when I find out more info I'll let you guys know.

Yeah, it's called Return of the Sith, what happens right before Star Wars: The New Hope. If you haven't seen the first two prequels or the originals you could be somewhat lost during this. I really didn't see many previews on tv. They were running the Burger King ads with Vader/Chewbacca and Pepsi with Yoda. I want to get and see Cinderella Man next, it has gotten good reviews.

since i am sweating my #### off, let me geek out and say that the scene where vader becomes vader is awesome...it had a frankenstein feel to it, which may have been what lucas was going for...on another note, my braves are the worst hitting team in baseball...chipper went on the dl yesterday, and estrada just got plowed over by erstad at the plate, and i think he is gone too...the run may be over...and i am not a bandwagon guy, i pulled for those boys starting in 1980...this could be a long year even though every other team in the nl east is around .500

bizquit1969

i saw cinderella man this weekend, and it is simply amazing...it truly is a great movie...the star wars movie was simply entertaining, this movie is a legit movie...people clapped during the boxing scenes, which were worth the price of admission alone

also saw the longest yard, while we are on movies, and that was pretty funny, and simply a mindless piece of entertainment...worth going to see if you just want to veg out at the movies, and are not looking for a real deep movie

what up all-

if you have not recieve your NBA Legends packages from me yet, no worries - they are on the way. My Post Office in the hospital had some "major problems" (I have no idea what that means - that is what the Post Office guy told me yesterday when I marched down there to find out where the hell my packages were). But the PO guy told me that they are "all caught up". So, if you have not recieved you packages by Saturday - please let me know and I will get your figures out via another post office.

So sorry for the inconvience - this has never happened through them before, but I am not going to send out of the hospital post office any more.

I know that some of you have recieved your packages - so to those of you with worries, have none - they are obviously out there.

Sorry I did not post this last night - but with the typhoon than came through my power was out at my house, and as of 5 am this morning so was the cable

ncstate, i took your advice and am reading the david thompson book "skywalker"

i didnt know this but he says that unc had something to do with ncsu getting probation in his sophmore year, the year they went undefeated but couldnt play in the ncaa's

the guy who was investigating them was a former roomate and good friend of bill guthridge when the were at ksu. so far its been pretty interesting.

also forgot this, but read that he and monty towe invented the alley-oop, but he couldnt dunk it back then, they changed the rule a year after he left. also when he was a sophmore, they then allowed freshman to play varsity, so he missed out of playing varsity for four years by one year

Welcome back kiapooh. We just pulled in from the mountains of NC. Went to see the Hickory Crawdads on Fri night, not a very good game till the 7th inning. Last night we went down to Asheville to see the Tourists, they got beat 10-6. But, the coolest part of the night, was that Radio and Coach Jones were there to throw out the first pitch. I got Radio to autograph a baseball and than both to autograph my ticket. Pretty fun weekend. Anyone get David Thompsons auto this weekend?

did the card show in greensboro this weekend. lots of people there were not...actually, it was pretty fun. bluedevils and zuba were there set up with the sp's...my table was right beside the place where bobby richardson was signing, so that was really cool. hall of famer was as nice as he could be to everyone that came to get his auto...he donated the money to charity which was awesome...i sold maybe 5 sp's, and a lot of cards...the sp's are not moving at all like they used to...if anyone is looking for anything in particular let me know. i may put all of them on the board to sell, and i will give them to you nc guys for what i paid for them. i have bought so much lately, i am ready for the semi-annual purge-of-product-get-some-money-to-blow-on-more-crap period...

Just seeing how everyone is.

Like biz said, the show in Greensboro was kind of disappointing. Seems like alot of SP collectors I used to see at every show have just stopped coming. Don't know is they've stopped collecting, or what. One of those things that makes you wonder...

For those of you in the area, here's an autograph opportunity... Austin Kearns (of the Reds), just got sent down, and will be in town playing the Durham Bulls this Thursday-Sunday. It's a great opportunity to score some nice autos. In the last week alone, I've scored: Ryan Howard, AJ Hinch, Howard Johnson, Ken Oberkfell, and pretty much the entire roster for the Norfolk Tides.

Of course, if you don't follow baseball, these people mean nothing to you. (oh yeah, Bucky Dent is the manager for the Columbus Clippers, and they're coming into town next month).

Anything else of interest out there everyone is seeing?

By the way...if anyone is going to see the Bats and the Bulls in Durham this weekend, Austin Kearns is a really nice guy. I got his autograph several years ago as I am a Reds fan and he is super nice. There are a couple of other guys on that team that will be in Cincy soon...Josh Han**** and Rey Olmedo. Joe Valentine a relief pitcher spent some time in Cincy earlier this year. In fact, the way the Reds pitching staff has been going, they could send the Bats entire pitching staff to Cincy...it certainly could do no worse than the current staff.

what is Shavlik Randolph thinking, he's not interested in returning to Duke now after he probably will not get drafted.

Randolph chooses uncertain draft prospects over Duke

06/22/2005

By AARON BEARD / Associated Press

Just about everyone expected Shavlik Randolph to end up in the NBA when he arrived at Duke. Few figured he would try to get there like this.

In a decision that likely ends a disappointing college career marked by injuries and unfulfilled expectations, Randolph has chosen to stay in the NBA draft instead of returning for his senior season with the Blue Devils.

In an interview late Tuesday, the 6-foot-10 forward — the owner of a six-point career scoring average — said he met with assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski to inform him of his decision that afternoon. Tuesday was the deadline for underclassmen to remove their name from the draft and return to school provided they had not hired an agent.

Randolph said he has not hired an agent and that he was prepared for anything, whether that meant hearing his name called in the June 28th draft or trying to catch on with a team as an undrafted free agent.

"Obviously there's an element of uncertainty and doubt," Randolph said. "But there's an old saying that the reward is in the journey, and I'm a firm believer in that. I definitely know I've got one heck of a journey in front of me."

Randolph said he had worked out for five teams — Charlotte, New Jersey, Boston, Washington and Orlando — and said he decided to stay in the draft after performing better than he expected. He also didn't sound interested in a rule that could allow him to return to school if he is undrafted, does not hire an agent or receive any money.

"I'm not one to discount anything, but right now (going back to Duke) is not what my plan is," he said. "My plan is to play in the NBA."

Randolph said he will look into hiring an agent and hopes to work out for more teams before the draft. He also said he plans to earn his religion degree, saying he is six credits short of completing his coursework.

"His mother and I made him look us in the eye and promise he would get his degree," said Kenny Randolph, Shavlik's father. "As long as he had his degree, if (the NBA) was his decision, we backed it 100 percent. He went to college to get a degree."

Coach Mike Krzyzewski was unavailable for comment, athletics spokesman Jon Jackson said.

Randolph, a McDonald's All-American, was the jewel of a recruiting class that featured J.J. Re**** and Shelden Williams in 2002. But while both Re**** and Williams flourished — both earned All-America honors from The Associated Press last season — Randolph has averaged just 6.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots in 92 games in his injury-plagued career.

His decision to enter the draft raised plenty of eyebrows. He wasn't invited to the NBA pre-draft camp in Chicago earlier this month, a good indicator of whether a player is even a blip on the radar for league prospects.

Chris Monter, who publishes an NBA draft newsletter five times a year and edits a Web site devoted to college basketball, said he didn't expect a team to draft Randolph.

"I would be waiting for the phone to ring after the draft and hoping someone would want to bring him in the summer league," Monter said.

Randolph had painted the decision to enter the draft as a way to evaluate his skills and get input from NBA teams. But his surprise declaration also fueled speculation that he was unhappy with his role at Duke, which returns six of its top eight players from last season's 27-6 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship squad.

The Blue Devils also add one of the nation's top recruiting classes, which includes 6-10 forward Josh McRoberts.

But Randolph said Tuesday night that rumors of him being unhappy at Duke are "just absolutely untrue."

Still, it's hard not to notice that Randolph — the grandson of former North Carolina State great Ronnie Shavlik — has never seemed to find his place in the Blue Devils' offense. He has rarely displayed the all-around game that he showed at nearby Broughton High School in Raleigh. Instead he bulked up from 215 pounds as a freshman to 240 as a junior to play mostly on the interior.

Injuries have hindered his development, beginning with left hip surgery after his freshman season. He played in all 37 games in 2003-04, averaging a modest 7 points while starting just 10 games for a Final Four team. Last season, Randolph missed four games with mononucleosis.

I think Shav would be better suited for NBDL or CBA for a few years.

06-23-2005, 07:34 PM
shav has nothing to lose...he would get no run at duke next year...he will be better off going to europe if he can get a contract over there...about 15 years ago, most of those leagues were loving big men from the states heading over there and playing, and it was a good way to make some money...i do not really know about how it is now...with as many europeans as there are in the nba, it seems like basketball is monster in alot of euro countries...

i think they make pretty decent money over their in europe, it seems as if his game would fit in nicely over there

appst70bull
06-24-2005, 05:24 AM
Yeah, I think he would do well in Europe as well. I heard something about the foreign players on ESPN 1230 last night. They were saying that the foreign guys are better drilled in the fundamentals of the game from when they start playing till they get drafted and that the game is kind of switching back to fundamentals. Now, I don't know how true that statement is because I don't watch a lot of NBA outside the Bobcats, Bulls and the Finals.

My dad and I are heading to Kinston tomm afternoon to see the Kinston Indians, than I'll be down to three NC stadiums to hit. On Tuesday I will be working the Jimmy Raye Camp all day (since it's at the hs I teach/coach football at). On Friday we will be leaving for Indiana, I finally get to go to the Louisville Slugger Museum and a Louisville Bats game. Than, I have to head up to the NC Coaches Clinic in Greensboro and might take a bit more time off and go up to Boone, NC and try to hit some TN& VA parks, since there is like 6 within 2 hours of Boone. Than I"m hitting Fayetteville July 28, Burlington-July 29 than leaving for Kannapolis July 30 for a game than to Charlotte July 31 for a game and I will have seen every active minor leage park in NC.Than it will be about time for our JVs first football game, August 18 and school starts Aug. 25. Left there and went back to the school for parking lot duty, saw all the players coming in in their limos, Escalades and best of all the F-650 driven my Ted Washington. Unfourtanely, only Lamont Jordan, Ted Washington, Ronald Curry, Joe Horn and a few others showed up, no Gonzales, Davis, Collins, Martin or Coles. Also, right when the kids were about to go onto the field to began it started pouring down rain, so we had to relocate to the gym. I didn't get any autos, but it was still a pretty good day.

the truth is, there is not really any way of knowing which of these guys will amount to anything. the guys that are willing to work the hardest and stay at it the longest, the ones willing to put in the work to continue to get better are going to last. think of all the "can't misses" that amounted to nothing, and vice versa. to me, the attitude is the biggest asset a young player can have. if a kid wants to get better, he will get better. jordan continued to work, and his drive was unmatched. all the great ones are that way. vince carter has made a living in the nba, but what a waste of potential. if he had worked at all, he would have been alot greater. jamison works his tail off, and it shows in his game. vince had a great year in new jersey b/c he wanted to. for every wade hinrich and gordan, there are a thousand kwame browns...i hope all the acc boys kick booty...even the jewel of raleigh/brooklyn...but i would love to see felton and may succeed for the home-state cats!

My bro is coming up for the show too, so we know for a fact there will be at least TWO people with SP's out there.

Also, I'm bringing out a bunch of Starting Lineups this weekend that have been just sitting around. If anyone is interested in buying them as a bulk lot, be sure to stop by. I think I still have around 150 pieces left, and would be willing to let them go VERY CHEAP.

Let me tell everyone about my boxes...

I picked up my package yesterday, and hit the mother load!

From my two NHL 8 cases I scored a Retro Linden and a Blue Belfour.

Then I open my Repaint box, and pulled both a BRUINS BOURQUE and WHITE YZERMAN!

Yeah, I got both from the Warehouse Find last week. The funny thing is, both NHL 1 repaints were in 1 box, so I had to chuckle and think that someone physically put BOTH in one box. If they knew the values of these (which they probably did), I can picture them saying... "Man, is this guy going to be happy!"

Not sure what I'm going to do with them yet. I'll probably keep them for now (since those were 2 of the 3 NHL repaints I never got when I was trying to get them all). Wish I still had my Amonte's right about now. Trade one for a Kariya, and then have all Four Horseman!
