I just returned from the Bulls-Bats' game in Durham tonight. Jeff Niemann carried a no hitter into the eighth before a double to center ruined it. It was an interesting game. The lights went out in the fifth inning and it also featured a spirited argument between the Bats' manager Rick Sweet and the home plate umpire on balls and strikes. However, there was a very small crowd there. I would guess perhaps 3000 people. I got Matt Maloney's autograph before the game on a photo. Then I caught Homer Bailey coming out of the DBAP after the game and he signed my poster print of him pitching in Durham last season. He personalized it too which was fine with me.

Man, how the hell did Duke lose that game? Nearly 500 yards of total offense. They dominated time of possession, only turned the ball over once which didn't hurt them. They dominated in passing and rushing yards and kept them to one score in the 2nd half. Strange way to lose.

If you go to any of the games to get autos, be prepared for a ton of people. Last night, there was probably 35 people there. Kennedy, Hughes, Igawa, and Wright were bombarded by people.

David Price had the misfortune of coming out of that entrance too, and got caught by everyone.

They're expecting even more people starting tonight ou there. Wouldn't be surprised at all if more than 50 are there.

Another high school football player dies...

Rose player dies after collapsing at game

Friends and teammates reacted with shock and grief to news of the death Saturday of a J.H. Rose High School football player who collapsed on the sideline during a game Friday night.

Jaquan Waller, a junior running back, died after being removed from life support equipment at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, an official there said.

The PCMH nursing coordinator did not reveal the cause of death or the exact time. Waller was listed in critical condition by the hospital earlier in the morning, but by noon, hospital officials revealed he had died.

“The family told us that they had decided to remove him from life support,” said Heather Mayo, information officer for Pitt County Schools.

After Waller was pronounced dead Saturday morning, teammate Josh Gurkins huddled close with his fellow Rampants outside Waller’s room.

“We’re going to have to come together” Gurkins said. “We need each other right now.”

The team held a meeting at 3 p.m. Saturday at the school. Additionally, the school made counselors available to the students over the weekend and will keep them available for as long as needed, according to Travis Lewis, executive director of student service for the school district.

“People respond differently to grief. For some students it will pass in a few days. For others it might take a week or a month or longer, so our trained counselors and crisis management team will be ready to provide needed support for our students,” Lewis said.

“This is a great loss for our school and community,” Rose principal Dr. George Frazier said in a release. “Our students and school family share in this loss. We’re trying to comfort the students and parents. It’s all about them right now.”

The students seem stunned by the loss.

“It’s crazy how he was playing in the game last night and you come to the hospital today and he’s gone,” said teammate James Carney.

Gurkins remembered Waller with affection.

“I’ve been playing with him since middle school, but he was close with everyone on the team,” he said. “He was a good player and a good kid.

“I just saw his mom,” he said. “She’s hurt but in good spirits. All we can do now is pray for him and his family and let God do the work.”

Mayo confirmed that Waller had sustained some kind of injury during Wednesday’s practice.

“He was tackled and had to be helped off the field,” Mayo said. “He was examined by a licensed injury management specialist. All indications were that he was OK, but his mother was contacted and took him home.”

Waller was not examined by a physician, however, between that time and the Friday game, to the best of Mayo’s knowledge. She could not account for whether Waller’s family had him examined by a doctor during that time.

“The next day, Jaquan was at school, feeling good, and practiced that afternoon,” Mayo said. “He was at school Friday and was examined again by the injury specialist that day. All indications were that he was OK and ready to play in Friday’s game.”

“He went in to run,” teammate Carney said. “His first run was all right. On the second run, he didn’t do too well. A second later, he got up and went off the field. When I got off the field a second after that, he was on the ground. He was breathing, but it wasn’t good.”

Teammate Dominique Sherman was also at the hospital Saturday and explained what he saw at the game.

“The last thing I saw, (Waller) was handling the ball and then put his head down and fumbled,” Sherman said. “I thought he was all right when he went off. I had to go in, but it was three (downs) and out. When I came off, I saw them taking him away on a stretcher. Last thing I heard at the end of the game, they were trying to stabilize him at the hospital.”

Two doctors were at the sideline with Waller at the game, and trainers kept his head stable until medics could get him onto a stretcher and into an ambulance within minutes of his collapse, Mayo said.

It is hard to "cry" about fantasy football when we see another high school kid taken too early...there have been a few deaths of high school football players lately...really sad for those families and schools...

As a high school football coach and having played against JH Rose, this hits me pretty hard. I've never had to deal with a player dieing, but having some lay on the turf for 30 minutes or so with neck injuries, is very nerve wracking. I couldn't imagine having to deal with that. That is the 3rd football player who has died in NC already this year. May they all Rest in Peace.

I have been off the boards for a day or so. I went up to the Quarterback Club in Falls Church, VA. I had lunch with and got the autos of Shawn Springs, Malcolm Kelly, Shaun Suisham, Randy Thomas, Chris Wilson, and one of the Redskins' old timers, Pat Fischer on a Redskins' mini helmet. Also met Mark Washington, a former Cowboys' player...he said that he knew how Tom Landry felt in that American Express commercial years ago when he was "surrounded by Redskins". Nice guys and a great time!!! My wife gave me a fan experience for Christmas last year and we went up to D.C. for a couple of days.

There are two cases in KB that are above the pegs. There are only Favre's and Romo's in those boxes. I did look at the Romo's to see if there were any clean ones and there were none. Someone had already taken one fig from one of the cases. I cracked open the other one.

I did not go to Chapel Hill tonight for Hamilton. I already own an autographed baseball, an autographed Reds' mini helmet, and an autographed Beckett Baseball Card monthly from 2001. I got all of those signed in person last summer when he was with the Louisville Bats and they played the Bulls in Durham. He is a great signer!!!

You can get there at 10 - 10:30 still find a good parking spot. I was there for the killing of the chiefs a couple weeks back

A Baptist Church near Johnson and Wales University charges $10 to park and it's only 3 blocks from the stadium. I have parked with them the last 3 times I have been to a game in Charlotte. They are the cheapest around and have security the whole time as well as a nice spot to tailgate and they have the restroom facililties open as well.

I will try to find the exact street names later. Think it was Front street then 5th anyway. I will send you a pm once I find it.

The Wake Forest basketball team will be signing autographs today (Sunday, October 26) from 2-4 P.M. at Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem. I am assuming they will be signing just outside of the Deacon Shop. Coach Gaudio, Harvey Hale, and L.D. Williams will not be there.

I have no problem at all with a black (or half black) President. My problem with Obama is that he seems to have a very shady past and will not give you a straight answer on any of the claims against him when asked.about it. Religion is another issue with him. He professes to be Christian but would not salute the American flag nor would he wear the flag pendent.

I hope he's a great President and that I'm very wrong about him. If I offend anyone here who is a supporter of Obama, I apologize.

Well, our high school football season ended last night. We finished 0-11 for the first time in school history. I now get to move into bowling, the AD talked me into coaching it for some decent money though. Maybe I will have more time to post on here and figure hunt since football is over.
