This is the worst metal thread ever.

Excuse my saying so, but of all the bands mentioned so far a vast majority was not even metal.

Let's start a new 'theme', everyone post their top 5 metal bands. I'll start.

Funeral Mist (painfully awesome black)
Diabolical Masquerade (avant-garde black that is mind-blowingly awesome)
Swallow the Sun (best melodic doom/death on the market)
1349 (new black with old black vibe)
Ahab (it will crush you)

And there we have it.

Sorry "top 5 metal bands at the moment" is what I meant.

My top 5 will be different by the time I wake up tomorrow, haha. Save for Funeral Mist, they're always on there.

Black metal is as bad as most everything else listed.
Just because they come from Norway, play as fast as humanly possible and can gurgle their phlegm the lowest and loudest doesn't make it the best of metal. Just makes it derivative and typical. Death metal has totally lost its edge. It became "commercially" viable over a decade ago. It's a joke now.
The smartest people either found something else to do or, in the case of Chuck, died.

The kind of metal you're talking about is something far-removed from what metal really is. That's why there are countless sub-genres in the style. And the stuff you listed falls near the bottom, where most of the sludge and mess falls.

Honestly, how many songs about defecating the shredded entrails of the fallen on their newborn starving babies in the crushing heat of flames from violent bloody conquest and rape must we hear before they figure they're a punchline? Death is really not that interesting. And rage should not be so sustainable.
And the bands that try to transcend that typical image by adding some kind of stupid humanistic message into the usual guttural maelstrom are just as laughable.

I've been hearing that stuff for around 20 years, and while I dug many of the early purveyors, it's just not interesting anymore. It's as cut-and-paste as pretty much everything else out there. It really is hard to find good music these days.

As far as metal in terms of "heavy metal", there hasn't been a good straight-on metal band in a long time. In my opinion, metal itself is long dead. It's merely an influence now for other approaches.

I guess I'm just a different era...

I just found out one of the bands I used to listen to put out a new one this past summer.
Laaz Rockit. It's pretty much a standard thrash album, but it is kind of nice to hear a group that knows what it was do it again. And it's heavier than they used to be which is odd. But it sounds okay.

This, is why no Metal thread will never last as long as a Hip-Hop thread. Death Angel, I mean no offense to you, but I knew this would come up. In the Hip-Hop thread, everybody embraces all kinds of hip-hop, whether it's mainstream, underground, Lil Wayne, Run-DMC, whatever. But in every rock thread somebody always has to put down other bands and say they're not Metal. Really, who give's a rat's ass? At the end of the day, I'm sure most of us in this thread can agree that we'd rather listen to any of the aforementioned bands than hip-hop no?

I love Slipknot, some people consider them Metal, some people don't. Frankly I don't give a crap, I'm gonna listen to whatever I like and you can call it whatever you want if it makes you happy, I'm not gonna care if you call my favorite band nu-metal or mallcore or whatever the hell subgenre people call it now. But considering the hip-hop thread has all these rappers that span a huge timeframe and different kinds of hip-hop, why can't we talk peacefully about bands that are just...I don't know, anything heavier than what we usually hear on the radio?

Sorry, I had a night that could've gone a little better and that's all I got to say about dat.

Easier to just say metal is dead. No one has asked the horse yet, though.

Truth.

Seriously, that should be one hell of an aneurysm from being that pissed off for that long. I'm honestly surprised that more of the screamers haven't keeled over right then and there.

I hate the fact that so called 'sub-genres' even exist in metal. A new catagory is created for every new band that comes out!

Hip-hop is more welcoming to other artists because there's so few substances that make up hip-hop. It's a simplistic musical genre, that despite it's sub-genres only makes up a handful of differences. That's why no one complains of if it's hip-hop or not, it's very cut and dry. It either is, or it isn't.

Metal is not like that.

Metal is made up of a lot of different things and has many genres. It really boils down to percentages. What percentage of the band is made up of "A", "B" or "C".

Fast guitars, bountiful kicks, tight pants, denim jackets - 90% Thrash
Lyrics about satanism and the occult - 10% Other

Classified: Thrash

Slow riffs, occasional drum beats, ominous vocals - 80% Drone Doom
Lyrics about kittens - 5% Teen Pop
Extravagant appearance - 5% glam

Classified: Drone/Doom

See what I mean?

Then you started getting into the Slipknot's and the All That Remains and other such acts. Now, despite my love for All That Remains, they're band composition makes up more percentages of non-metal factors than metal. Hence why they fall under the genre 'metalcore' (we can all agree on that), which, despite it's name, is not a real sub-genre of metal, but more hardcore with metal influences.

Didn't mean to step on anyone's toe's, I'm no elitist, but I was just seeing where we were going with this thread. Where do we draw the line? Because there's a real fine line between some of the metalcore stuff that's been talked about and Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine.

And if those last two bands are considered metal here, I'm outta here!

Haha.. Avenged Sevenfold is one of my favorite bands, but I'll be the first to tell you that they aren't a metal band. They have metal elements and influences, but they certainly don't fall into the metal category. The same goes for Bullet.

That said, I'm about to purchase some Born of Osiris. I'll let you guys know how that is.

frinspar, I guessed you were a thrash fan before I even finished reading your message.

Also, I gotta say, you sound dangerously old when you talk like that. "Well, in MY day metal was METAL!".

Get over yourself.

Keep up, or keep shut.

And unless you listen to solely Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and maybe even Iron Maiden, you have no place to say what's 'far removed' from what 'metal really is'.

And I'm certain you realize that all your points against black metal can be equally and just as effectively (if not moreso, seeing as how you've made apparent your knowledge of black metal is absolutely minimal) against your prized thrash and early metal genres.

"How many songs about drinking beer and hanging out with buddies can you write? How tight of pants can you possibly wear? What kind of lame musicians wear high-tops and denim jackets? How lame."

Long story short - don't be an *******.

Baroness' latest album was fantastic.
Along the same lines, Heston Rifle had a good one in "what to do at time of accident..." But it was something else, infused with elements of metal throughout.
And Isis has produced some alright stuff.

Devin Townsend's various projects produce some pretty good metal.

Riverside kicks serious ass. Again, prog metal, but very accessible.

Is Baroness any good? I mean, aside from their latest album? I've heard about them, but I've never heard them.

And by the way, for the people that can't wrap their heads around 'all the sub-genres of metal'.

There's only about 11.

And they exist because each one of these genres are vastly different from one another, but hold enough common ground to be considered metal.

Some genres take bits and pieces from others to make up a unique sound, but they're still easily classified. Thrash metal sound with black metal themes = blackened thrash. See what I mean? It's simple, don't exaggerate.

Just as long as you promise to keep proclaiming how ****ty each thread is when you post in them the first time, that'd be great.

If you're a big fan of:

Cradle of Filth, Death, Iron Maiden, Sabbath, NEW Metallica (save St. Anger), Poison, Kiss, Ratt, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Venom, Slayer, In Flames and Killswitch Engage ...

then does that mean you have to start making fan sub-genres?

How pathetic is it when pigeon-holing bands into sub-genres hits it's lowest level when System of a Down and Bon Jovi are considered "Armenian Metal" and "New Jersey Rock"?

Let's face it ... if you use an electric guitar and use down tuning, it's pretty safe to say that it's gonna be METAL.

"This thread sucks because no one here likes the bands that I like."

Does it REALLY make a band more metal if they put out a CD and it sells 73 copies as opposed to a band getting radio play and selling millions? Ridiculous.

Shut up with sub-genres and just like what you like and let everyone else like what they like.

It's pretty good, I'd say it covers all of the major sub-genres and controversies of metal. Also, most of the songs played are kickass!

Hey Glad to Join this thread!
Heres some of the bands I've been into lately, mainly death/metalcore but don/t be surprised when I mix it up.
The Faceless (technical death)
Job For A Cowboy(grind/metal core)
Dir En Grey(J-pop turned metal)
Slipknot(its the flippin knot!
Between The Buried and Me (verstial sound indy, hardcore, hindu, country, metalcore)

I agree sub genres suck in METAL, so just call what it is, METAL. But its nice when in your in a certain mood you could say "HEY! Bust out the case o' PBR and crank up the Death!"
And than theres these kids and their "scenes", which is cool if your into that.

Also a fan of 80's thrash.

The Faceless rules! We opened for them a little while back. Have you heard the new album?
